We had afternoon tea at Gotham on Saturday for my friends 40th birthday and we had a wonderful time! The staff are all lovely and really made the occasion special! We will definitely be returning
After a good meal and two bottles of expensive wine, the two of us, (local business persons) wanted to spend another couple of hundred in "Brass", the upstairs, private club. Adverts for Honey had suggested this would be possible. On the night we were told we could not use the bar/club as "there was only one person up there". This was a reference to the staff level, not the number of customers. I would have thought that two men being willing to double our spending would have been a good enough reason to send another member of staff into Brass, at the expense of the overly staffed restaurant, particularly as I was personally considering applying to join the club which has a £100 application fee and £750 pa membership fee. Poor customer relations, Gotham. Judging from the level of customers, you can't really afford to turn away custom.
Excellent surroundings loved the theme. Need to book accommodation to get the full experience.. Will happen soon .
There were seven of us celebrating a special birthday. The food was wonderful. The service, at first, felt a little over formal, however whilst the standard of service was very high so was the friendliness, knowledge of the menu and wines and above all the professionalism.
I have no criticism at all.
An outstanding restaurant.
Visited for afternoon tea for a friends birthday, terrible service waited 30 mins for a drink. Cutlery was missing, we was given dirty tea strainers and received poor service overall. The food was not great either, no choice of scones, half a macaroon was missing, custard was missing from one trifle and the bread tasted stale! On complaining the waiter just didn’t understand our concerns and requested we complain via email. Big let down, I would not recommend this restaurant!!
Was looking for a nice restaurant for a date and the Gotham Hotel came to mind as I had always wanted to enter. The restaurant itself was really nice, nice ambience although it was very quiet. First odd moment was that we were given the food menu immediately. We had to wait to get attention of waiter in order to get the drinks menu. (My partners cocktail was unremarkable but fine) We found the food rather bland (lamb and sole options) and we then decided not to bother with dessert. Bill came to£80 odd pound for a main course and a drink. Impressive setting but I can't see myself going back for that food at that price.
Absolutely stunning restaurant, with breathtaking views. Very private, so perfect for a romantic meal! The food was beautifully presented, one of the finest meals we’ve ever had (we had 3 courses from the pre-theatre menu). Our waiter was fantastic, so friendly and welcoming and he made us feel so comfortable. Thank you!
Would definitely return and recommend.
They couldn’t find our booking. Had to go and get my phone to prove it. No real apology. Then the wrong menus. Then flat champagne. We were lucky- the table after us they ran out of green veg. Then took 20 mins for manager to remove service charge.
Steak was great though.
The food was very basic and there wasn’t much. I’ve had a number of “afternoon teas” in various places and sadly this was the worst. There were no spoons in the jam or cream to put on the scones. We had to ask for spoons to eat the peach Melba and were given desert spoons which were to big to get into the pot! We were told it was unlimited tea and coffee and asked did we want water. That water cost £4.95 when there were jugs of water available for free!
On a positive note the surroundings were beautiful
It was a huge disappointment. I had booked the afternoon tea for my mum's Birthday which we had been looking forward to after hearing good reviews from friends and family.
When we arrived we waited for over 5 minutes before being greeted and seated, something I would usually have over-looked and forgotten about if the rest of the experience was good. Once we were seated on an unset table in the corner we ordered our afternoon tea and drinks - an English tea, Latte and hot chocolate. Our food arrived before the drinks (around 20 mins after ordering) and the drinks arrived cold, as if they had been sat around for a while. The waiter said he would be back with teaspoons but he didn't re-appear so I had to get sugar for myself and go to the counter to ask for milk. The food was bland and uninspiring, but again something I'd usually have overlooked if the service and drinks had been good. We ordered a second lot of drinks which took a further 20 mins to arrive, and by which point we were ready to leave. Our original waiter never appeared again and it was a separate waiter who took our bill. When I asked for the 10% service charge to be removed he did apologies but we still paid out £75 for cold drinks and bland sandwiches. We wrote an email to Gotham the day of, (4 days ago now) to express our disappointment but have yet to receive a response.
For a hotel/restaurant that calls itself 'luxurious' and offers a premium service I was incredibly disappointed. The food was boring, the decor was cheesy and the service was terrible - definitely won't be returning on recommending to anyone else.
This is such a special place. I can't recommend it highly enough. Food was delicious and gluten free requests were effortlessly catered for. The setting is beautiful and the views across the city are wonderful. The service we experienced was the best I've had in Manchester. Thankyou Hotel Gotham x
Excellent enjoyed the occasion very memorable would have no problem recommending.
Pleasant surrounds, friendly service and good food. My wife’s 40th birthday celebration was a happy and pleasant occasion because of these things. Thank you 😊
Restaurant was great, staff couldn't have been more helpful and the food was fantastic. Would most definitely return.
I had duck it was over cooked after waiter explaining that it would be served pink. When it came back it was still over cooked, hard and chewy. Even the turnips were raw the second time around. The decor is tired. Some of the waiting staff are not up to speed with the menus.
Overall rubbish experience won’t be revisiting
This was our first visit to Hotel Gotham for afternoon tea. The service was excellent and the staff were friendly and attentive. We will definitely be going back.
Had a lovely afternoon tea for my boyfriend's birthday last week. We were seated immediately at a gorgeous window overlooking Manchester and the host took my coat. Delicious sandwiches that worked well together and they were refillable! Also couldn't manage all the beautiful cakes so the waiter had these boxed for me! Scrumptuous food and an overall fantastic experience. We will be back in the future! :)
I went here with a friend to celebrate both our birthdays. The food was good, not a lot of choice though. The service was mediocre. Quite an expensive place.
Perfect table with super view in the restaurant, delicious food and wine with impeccable service . Definitely a venue for a special treat.
Food was very nice but the restaurant itself was lacking in atmosphere and when we asked to access to rooftop bar after dinner we were told to wait to see if there was space as it may have had to be kept for their important hotel guests. All just a bit snooty.
Lovely table until a hen do came in and noise went to 0-100 in seconds luckily we were just finishing food was lovely although we wood of preferred more savoury than all the desserts staff were attentive and we would go back again
We really enjoyed fantastic quality of services, foods and drinks!
Sommelier is so reliable.
The decor is quaint and fun and if you are lucky to have a seat by a window the view is amazing. I do think the tables for two are too small and are a little to close together. The service is outstanding, staff friendly and professional and the food is delicious.
Very nice afternoon tea, sandwiches freshly made and lovely scones. Very clean and quirky.
Food rather good and creative. Potatoes were virtually raw which was a bit of a surprise. Main courses very tasty. Cocktail arrived half way through the meal so could do with better coordination. Friendly staff.
Nice view from the 6th floor.
Rather pricey overall but good meal.
Truly enjoyable champagne afternoon tea to celebrate a special birthday. The staff were friendly, helpful and service with a smile ! This restaurant on the sixth floor had a very Art Deco feel and good views of the city centre. Will definitely visit again.
A restaurant with unique character but congested.
It was poorly maintained. A light was flashing intermittently which was rather annoying.
Food was well presented but you might not get what you ordered. Sea trout main dish was meant to serve with oyster (as stated on the menu). The oyster was swapped to mussels. I was not informed about the change.
Shocking service. I ordered a mocktail and a cocktail. I had to remind the waiter twice. It took forever to get served only with the cocktail. The mocktail never come. When i asked the waiter the first time, he gave me a silly smile which i found rather rude.
As a hotel restaurant, this is clearly substandard.
Overall the dining experience was very good, but there were a few small points that prevent me from giving a 5 star review. We booked with an Itison voucher which included two courses and a Martini each but unfortunately there was no body available to make the cocktails. This wasn't a problem for us in particular and we were offered the opportunity to return later however we were on are way to the theatre so this was not possible. So, it may have been better to offer us an alternative standard drink from the bar.
The food tasted delicious but wasn't very warm .....so again I could only give three stars.
All the staff at the hotel and restaurant were very welcoming and pleasant, and we did enjoy the meal overall and we would happily return.
We had afternoon tea at Gotham. We were very disappointed in the quality of the food.
This has been addressed by the hotel without fuss or embarrassment.
Staff are credit to the hotel.
The afternoon tea just lacks 'quality
The sandwiches were dry and edges of the bread very dry. Scones were rock hard more like a biscuit than a scone. Cakes were 'average' but appeared a little dry and tired looking. The custard tart was dry. The custard had thick skin looking as though it had been sitting in a hot kitchen. Not very appetising. There were little things they just don't get right.
No spoons for jam and cream so you have to use your tea spoon from cup and saucer. No tongs for the sugar lumps! How many grubby fingers have touched the lumps.
We have taken afternoon teas in many hotels. If you are ever in Chester go and visit The Grosvenor Hotel and see how Afternoon Tea should be served.
The hotel have addressed this issue without fuss or embarrassment. Staff are a credit.
Not a bad experience as such but nothing special. Lovely mushroom soup starter but the rest of the food was very average. The fish was nice but everything else on my plate tasted of absolutely nothing which in itself is an achievement.
Service was very average too. Had to ask a waiter if we could have a drink after we'd already ordered food. Everything was rushed and not that friendly. It wouldn't bother me if it was somewhere like croma but for the money and location you expect a bit more than is offered here.
Fabulous food, fabulous atmosphere, fabulous service. Highly recommend
Excellent Afternoon Tea experience, one of the nicest in Manchester. Special mention for our waitress Stephanie and to the very friendly concierge who were both so lovely and friendly to myself and my friends. Looking forward to coming again soon.
Finding the place was a bit hard - its above Jamies Italian. The concierge on the door was a bit frosty saying although we had a dinner reservation we might not be able to go for a drink in the bar (we arrived 30 mins early hoping for an aperitif). Having said that the maître'd on the restaurant reception was lovely. Staff in the restaurant were good, quite attentive, but not 100% au fait with the drinks menu. When its £13 and up for a cocktail I would expect they know the menu details.
Starter of pigeon was one of the best pigeon dishes I have tasted and was excited for the main. Sadly the steak seemed smaller than I would expect, was over (medium, requested medium rare) and was quite chewy. Not £28 worth, as it was clearly not chargrilled as per the menu, was lacking in seasoning and actual flavor. Also my sauce was forgotten so it was awkward to request this again and I had to proceed without it for half the course which was a shame. French fries were distinctly average. Clearly not hand cut, and the portion was extremely small for the £4.50 price tag. My colleagues £4.50 side salad was also little more than a garnish. Desert picked the pace up a bit, but was left so disappointed by my steak and measly fries.
Overall a mixed experience. If the mains could be at the standard both in flavor, presentation and style to the starters which were really exceptional I would return. Until then, there are better options in the city if you want fine dining.
Was really looking forward to our afternoon tea and although not a disaster it was underwhelming at best. the presentation of the tea didn't match the decor of the venue and overall was missing the wow factor. I have no doubt the venue is capable of stepping up the whole experience to make me want to go back for more rather than going elsewhere.
We were suitably looked after and were given access to the bar even though we were not staying in the restaurant. The food was the best we have ever tried.
We went for dinner. 2 cocktails, 3 course tasting menu, bottle of wine, coffee, $110 including tip. Cant beat that with a stick. The tasting menu was just 1 hit after another. The mackerel starter was stunning and the Lamb main was simply outstanding. Its got the feel of fine dining, just not the price tag!!!
Absolutely disgusted, Service was rubbish, food wasn’t that good either, when we told the manager he just shrugged his shoulders and walked away, won’t be going again, much better places in Manchester
Very pleasent afternoon tea. Attentive staff. Food preferences catered for and unlimited hot beverages.
Great service and lovely food - perfect for birthday meal for my sister 😊
Staff and food was great, loved every minute of it.
