Hotel du Vin & Bistro - Birmingham
Overall, we had a fantastic time. Very attentive staff, excellent sommelier and very good food too.
Our only slight bugbear was there were a few long waits during our evening, particularly from receiving drinks to ordering our food. It was valentines though, so clearly it was going to be busy.
Not that that takes anything away from how good the experience was, will definitely be back!
The restaurant was great. However, they did NOT have our reservation so at the time very embarrassing especially as it was fully booked. The Manager did manage to find us a table and said they had some problems before with Open Table bookings not coming through? This table was booked especially for my birthday so it was not the experience we wanted. Maybe this is something you need to take up with the Hotel.
Used to be very good great service unfortunatly now service is poor food is overpriced and wine expensive.
I took 3 colleagues to celebrate a promotion. Unfortunately the service was terrible we had to ask repeatedly to order, we had to ask for our drinks to be topped up. Then only 3 of the 4 main courses turned up. Our waiter was apologetic but it was clear there wasn’t enough colleagues on to serve. Not good enough in any restaurant especially when the bill came to over £300. Very disappointed after hearing good things about Hotel du Vin.
The surroundings, staff and food were all excellent. We were not rushed and the waiting time between courses was perfect so they could be savoured. Tables were not on top of each other so conversations could not be overheard. Lovely experience.

Nice with small rooms but we were round the corner out of sight and had to ‘chase’ for service. Otherwise good food and casual relaxed environment
We had a great evening, from the start we were welcomed and had great service. Everything from the artisan bread through to starters, mains and desserts were great. 3 of our party had steak and all were cooked to perfection. The wine list was extensive also. This is a pricey restaurant when you are adding on wine, however for a special occasion it was worth it. Also we were going to go elsewhere originally, however the first restaurant could not seat is for an hour, we waited 30 minutes at the bar and were not even served, as well as was so loud we could not hear each other speak. Thanks to Opentable and some slots being available we managed to get a reservation and we were very, very pleased that we did! I would recommend it.
For the cost, I found the lunch disappointing and quite average. The rib eye steak was grisly and the starter was very light on calamari which was covered in greasy batter. I will not be going back.
A lovely evening again at Hotel du Vin - unfortunately marred by my dining partner’s phone ringing!

Intresting menu good food great wine
Amazing place, service was excellent, the staff really polite and very lovely.
I think we were v unlucky but this could have been mitigated by better service.
1. We booked a table for 5 via Opentable on a Sunday evening about 40min beforehand and upon arrival they had no sight of our booking. This seemed to cause a bit of an issue and the staff had to go and find a table even though there were plenty of empty tables throughout the duration of our meal.
2. Two dishes for one person were both wrong (see below) whilst one person had both the main and starter brought out with all the starters.
3. There was an incredibly long wait for the correct starter to come through second time around and at not one point did the staff come to apologise for the delay or give us an update to where the food was.
4. We were also told that they had run out of the onglet which impacted 3 mains but a substitute cut would be used for the various dishes. Upon arrival the various substitute dishes were all the same and the waitress said that this is what they were going to provide us even though she had previously said the cuts would be used in the different in dishes. No apology (again).
5. They didn't know how well each cut had been cooked
6. We were also informed that the kitchen had run out of bearnaise sauce but kindly made us a peppercorn sauce instead. However, we were not asked if this substitute is what we wanted - bit odd they could make one but not the other...
7. When offered condiments the waitress began to go around giving each person a teaspoon of it. This may have been the straw that broke the camel's back but why could this not be left on the table so we could simply serve ourselves?
8. As stated above, service in general was poor and apologies were never offered. The customer is not always right but there is a time when staff should rectify the issues they create. As such we paid for everything we had (even the bottle of wine they missed off the first draft of the bill which we pointed out to them) but not the service charge.
I cannot fault the visit to Hotel du Vin, it was my birthday & it's one of many lovely places in Birmingham I've wanted to experience.
I do have to say though when we arrived for our booking the hotel had no knowledge of our booking! Thankfully they were extremely accommodating & organised our table within minutes.
Not sure what happened with the communication to the hotel but it had clearly broken down somewhere. I fear at a busier time we may not have been so lucky!!
We ended up eating here as we were staying in the hotel and didn't fancy walking far to find food. Our usual restaurant choice is the likes of Nando's , so at first we were slightly apprehensive about visiting such a luxury establishment. The service we received was outstanding and an excellent value for money; it was quite late when we arrived, close to their closing time, but it was no problem for us to order our steak well done, we were given complimentary drink tokens which were exchanged with no problems and although told there may be a wait for our food it came within a reasonable time. The resturant itself was cosy and warm, somewhere suited for all types of people and occasions.
Kitchen disaster causing chaotic response
Reasonable venue for a business lunch. Slight mismatch on the setting, furniture and the pricing. They would like you to spend £50 a head for lunch. Waiters attentive, but neglected to offer us the "two courses for £13" menu until we asked for it. The standard of the food was average and the portions rather small. We asked for chips, first they did not come as ordered, and then we had too many. I think the waiters, who are mainly (all?) foreign nationals, did not have sufficient knowledge of English to grasp all the nuances of our questions about the components of the "set menu". I doubt that they had sampled all the dishes.
Would go back, mainly because there are not many restaurants like this, for a business lunch in that area, so far as I can tell as an "outsider"who is not 100% familiar with central Birmingham. :-)
Main course - Chateaubriand - was very good but dessert - crepes suzette - was inedible!
Service was slow and overall it was a disappointing experience.
We ate in the restaurant whilst attending a trade show at the NEC, and I am writing this reluctantly as I feel all should be good. For 2 of us it was. However, my wife ordered a medium fillet. It arrived rare, but the waitress immediately took it back to the kitchen. It came back better cooked. However, it had a pungent order, and when we (both tried it) had a bite there was a distinctly bitter taste. The waitress took it away and asked my wife if she would like something else. She had the rib eye, which my colleague and I had and that was fine . But , of course, by then when it had arrived we had nearly finished ours.
We were not charged fo my wife's meal, but in reality she ended with something she didn't really want and virtually eating on her own. In our opinion, the meat was probably too fresh and contained too much blood.
However, this on its own could maybe overlooked, but all courses including the drinks took a long time to arrive, and it was not that busy. This was very strange as the staff were very helpful, courteous and working hard. Moreover, this is the second time with an unfortunate experience. Same time in 2015, the manager , unprovoked, gave us a substantial discount on the final bill because the service was so poor.
Very disappointing, because we want to like the Hotel du Vin
We were drinking in this hotel - a favourite and decided to see if there was a table available. We were told, so I looked on open table for a restaurant nearby. Interestingly there was availability at the hotel so I booked it. The manager was somewhat surprised when we turned up but showed us straight to a table. On enquiringly as to why we hadn't been able to book from the room next door but able to book on line, we were told there were problems with Open Table yet at no time was the restaurant not able to accommodate the people who attended who had presumably booked. It appeared there was a discourse between what availability the restaurant thought they have and what availability was provided to Open Table. Service was ok but not great and the food was nice except for a rhubarb crumble soufflé which required a wait of 15 minutes. We waited 25 and the specimen served was appalling! Overcooked and like rubber! After complaining we weren't charged but overall the experience was disappointing
Enjoyed Sunday lunch BUT a couple of points. Firstly we were half way through our second course before cocktails arrived having chased twice. Secondly we were a party of 5. Mixed veg came; loads of potatoes and carrots. 2 small pieces of parsnip and 2 pieces of broccoli. Had to ask for more and then had to chase a second time. Let the whole experience down a little
Service is good. And dessert is really good. Business meal.
I must say I love hotel du vin Sunday lunches, however this one wasn't up to other du vin standards. The food was fine it was the lack of beef with the roast dinner which baffled me the most. Only two extremely thin slices of beef was served by the time the mustard was brought to the table I'd finished my beef!
This handsome restaurant with its pleasant bar was badly let down by the lack of staff. The staff that one did encounter were pleasant but overstretched, failing to take orders, dropping bread baskets and distracted in their demeanour. The wine was good, though pricey, the cheese souffle unconventional but adequate, the steak tartare good. However, the liver and bacon was overcooked (the bacon was actually burned) and the Dover sole very overcooked. New potatoes were requested to accompany the sole, black heritage potatoes were brought. These were: 1) not what was ordered 2) inappropriate for the dish 3) well past their sell-by date 4) very nasty. They were removed from the bill by the pleasant maitresse d'hotel.
Very disappointing and nowhere near as good as the Hotels du Vin in Winchester and Cambridge.
Food was excellent
having had a couple of issues at Hotel Du Vin before it is not a "first choice". however Saturday it was excellent with superb service. the food was really good and the sommelier was suitably skilled and theatrical There seemed to be a definite jump in "effort" all round to make this a top restaurant. Only hope it continues
Had a lovely romantic meal here on Valentine's night. The service and food was amazing. Did feel one member of staff looked down on us a little, but otherwise it was amazing.
Something went seriously wrong with their booking system and it was evident that they were seriously overbooked. Service was very slow, but they gave us free champagne, and ultimately all drinks were free and a further discount was applied. All in all a potentially bad experience was made ok through freebies :-)
We booked to eat on Saturday night. The restaurant has a nice ambiance, but we had a couple of problems with the meal. The kitchen had clearly gone into meltdown on the night we were there and it took over an hour and a half for the main course to arrive. Prior to its arrival we were offered a desert! When the food arrived it was cold and we had to wait for them to cook it again. The food itself was excellent.
However, when we complained about this they did their best to put it right, and gave us a complimentary bottle of wine. The serving staff themselves at all levels were charming and professional but it just didn't work out as an experience on the evening we were there.
An average evening really, we were expecting the food to be a little better on a Saturday evening as we have dined there on Sunday at brunch and it had been Excellent - so from a foodie point of view a little disappointing. No steak knives with steak, little overcooked.
Our first visit to the bistro. From the moment we entered we were greeted with very friendly and helpful staff. The food was very tasty and the choice of wine was very good. A very enjoyable evening. We will definitely be visiting the bistro again.
Really enjoyed our evening at hotel du vin, the food was perfect especially the steak. The wine was very good and you really cant fault the service, all the staff are very friendly and proffesional.
Faultless in every way! Had a Gourmet Society card which gave us 2 for 1 which made the meal very cheap! Would come again and would recommend!
Didn't know what to expect-but we were pleasantly surprised. Ambience excellent,service attentive and engaging. All aspects of the food were superb-hard to fault.
Would go again In a hurry!
we were few minutes late but the staff were very welcoming even though it was a quiet night and the recommendations and service were very good.
Had a lovely lunch here in February. The food was really great and the service was friendly. Only bug bear was that the service was quite slow and given that there were only a few other tables when we were there it's not clear why this was. We were happy chatting and catching up and weren't pushed for time but if we had been it might have been an issue. Would go back next time I'm in Birmingham
Had dinner on Wednesday night at The Hotel du Vin in Birmingham, very nice food, the service was quite slow as they were very busy.Lovely atmosphere there. Have been there several times over the years and is consistently good.
Not a great experience.The coq au vin was dry and overcooked.Service not as good as usual, mainly because the staff were new.
I absolutely loved my visit to Hotel Du Vin. It was a meal for a friend's birthday, the food was fabulous and the staff were extremely attentive; they even provided a special birthday pudding! Fabulous!
