Hotel du Vin & Bistro - Cheltenham
I was greatly underwhelmed by my experience here. The waiters were inattentive and I had to consume half of my meal before they came over so that I could inform them that some of my food had not arrived. Both main courses were uninspiring and as a result the cost of the meal was far more than it was actually worth.
On the plus side the wine was a good standard and the evening was saved by the delightful desserts
As it was New Year’s Eve the price was extortionate, the food was very poor for the price and the service of the waiters and head downstairs was poor. Not once did they smile and managed to get our food delivered to the wrong table. The wine ordered was the wrong type too. Usually when we visit it’s a very pleasant experience but not this time.
Don't get me wrong - three stars overall is good (I wish I could give 3.5 - it was nudging a four), and I would very much recommend HdV. We had a 10-person booking between Christmas and New Year, and although the restaurant wasn't too busy, they did seem a little short-staffed. Diners who beef about this kind of thing need to consider the economic climate and restaurant financial viability before moaning, and in fact the team were more attentive than in many places I've been - remember, two stars is "fair" and we tipped (I hope they'll agree!) well at more than 12%. Anyway, the food was good, the wines we picked were excellent for their categories and the family had a lovely lunchtime.
Disappointed. Everything was "OK" but fell short of expectations and what I had previously experienced at other Hotel du Vin.
Only one other table occupied so lacking greatly in atmosphere. Disappointing as had had a fabulous evening in the Bristol branch some time ago.

We have been to Hotel du Vin many times and also stayed there before we bought a house in Cheltenham. It has always been excellent but sadly our visit was very poor this time around.
Not as nice as we had hoped. Cold bread, cold red wine, cold atmosphere.
Family meal - Very good food even on kids menu - very attentive competent engaging staff which makes a change.
Good food with a twist on a few classics.
The food was good but atmosphere was dead. For a Friday lunch it was like a ghost town in the hotel/dining room!

We've been here a couple of times before and always had a great time, until this occasion.
There was a 45 minute wait between them taking away the plates from our starters and bringing out the main course, with no apology or explaination. My food was good, but not amazing, especially considering what you pay for it. My starter was the beef carpaccio and to be fair, that was delicious. My main was the lamb ribs, and I found them far too fatty. By the time I'd finished my meal, there was so much gristle and fat left on the plate, it looked like I'd hardly touched my food. I won't be ordering that dish again. The creme brûlée dessert again, was delicious. At the end of the evening we had to ask for the bill twice, before eventually giving up and walking up to the service counter, asking a third time for the bill. I waited there this time while he did it, and I insisted the service charge be knocked off as I begrudged paying it in those circumstances.
I don't wish any ill on HDV, as I've said, we've had lovely meals there in the past, but on this occasion, given the fact that it wasn't overly busy, and considering the money you're paying, they could have done much better.

A pleasant large dining room at basement level. We just had mains. My wife's fish dish was pleasant. I had the house burger which was a little over cooked and firm, although it was OK. All in all an OK meal.

I was very disappointed our vegetables were very late, delivered after chases when we were more than half way through our main courses . There was also a tang of rancid cooking oil somewhere in the meal. Service away from these issues fine.
Very pleasant ambiance but mediocre food and wine.
The staff were friendly and polite; they wrote Happy Birthday on a chocolate dessert for our friend, which was a last-minute request so we appreciate their effort. The food was average, we were a group of seven so we tasted quite a few items on the menu. And the wine was a let down - the selection is decent but there is either a problem in they way they transport/store the bottles or we were just unlucky.
My wife and I went there for a mid-week evening meal. The bistro-style room is downstairs in the Hotel Du Vin; we were the only ones there when we arrived at about 19:00 but other tables were taken as the evening went on. The service was friendly and prompt and the food generally good, although, for the money, we have had better steaks elsewhere. My wife found a piece of plastic in her side dish of vegetables; it wasn't a big deal for us and the waiter quickly disposed of it. We certainly weren't looking for or expecting any sort of compensation but the manager offered us a free dessert each which we thought was a nice touch. All in all, we had a very enjoyable meal and I'm sure that we'll go there again in the future.
Booked a table for 7 a week before, when we arrived they did not have our booking. I showed the staff my confirmation email, to which they dismissed and said they would find us a table. They put us on a table far to small for our party of seven. (There were many tables available and unused whist we were there which was over 3.5 hours!) our waitress was so very slow and rude: took over 35 minutes to get our drinks over 50 minutes for our first course Soup, which was very nice, would have been better if we had been given some bread as well. The French market table was very nice(best bit of the whole meal) The mains took over 5 minutes for the last plate to arrive from the first. The roasts although looked lovely were very very poor! The meat and gravy were laced with cinnamon, the potatoes overwhelmed with garlic, the broccoli was only ever shown boiling water, the only use for the Yorkshire puddings would have been for wedging the wobbly table. The whole roast was under correctly seasoned and over incorrectly spiced; it was NOT pleasant. The puddings were also poor. The only positive was the sommelier whom was great! We all enjoyed the wine greatly. The bill £350.00 for a disastrous meal, We will not be rushed back anytime soon.
We went to celebrate my son's 21st, have been before and it's his favourite restaurant in Cheltenham. Food was amazing, we were very well looked after and my son absolutely loved it! Will definitely go back.
Having eaten here before I knew what to expect. The food is reasonably good but not as good as one should expect from Hotel du Vin and had other places had late availability would have chosen an alternative. Inferior to Daffodil, 131. Petit Blanc, lumiere and others.
no record of booking, food was disappointing, slow service however the wine was good.
We sent 3 dishes back and asked for them to be removed from the bill. In the morning i wished we'd asked for all the food to be removed.
Staff were all very friendly, food was plentiful and really well prepared/cooked. We were not rushed and the atmosphere was lovely. Will definitely be going back for Sunday lunch again.
We visited the Hotel Du Vin on Saturday evening and had a fabulous meal. We have previously been for Sunday lunch - which again is amazing - but had only been once before for an evening meal when it had just opened. The standard of the food was 1st class. I do believe I had the best Fillet Steak I have ever had - it was so tender. I would highly recommend going and will be going again
We and other tables complained the veg tasted reheated… potatoes so hard and odd, soggy veg… rubbery Yorkshire and thinest roast beef, not a hint of pink… very brown. If you like me are an old fan or Brighton's Hotel du Vin Sunday lunch… you will be disappointed by the new Cheltenham offer.
French table started excellent… however the Sunday roast is truly awful!!
The waitress said she would ask the chef if the veg was a reheat job… no response… just ignored our complaint and I heard another table do the same…
I left all the veg… the one thing I was looking forward to… the old days al dente green beans are long gone!!
whats worse my host at the B&B also had Sunday lunch in Bristol and guess what just the same… :-( very disappointed.
I guess they are trying to offer value…. 4 courses for 25 pound… Please Hotel du Vin either cut some of the french market and soup or put the price up… I expect so much more quality from Hotel di Vin

Expected more form this place. Terrible service, 45 minutes to get to speak to a waitress afterhaving to ask to be seated. Decided to leave as lots of tables were complaining about the abscence of their food.
It's a lovely restaurant, the staff make you feel really special and are as attentive as you want them to be. The menu gives a good choice for all tastes and the wine selection is quite extensive. If you want to make a special occasion, very special then this is an ideal venue. There is a main restaurant but for group or family occasions there are individual rooms available.
We were very surprised that at 1.15 on a Saturday how few people were having lunch there; this contrasts to a dinner we had there 7 or 8 years ago when it was packed. Somehow, the buzz has gone, the décor is tired and I cannot see how anyone would really book the chefs table. There is also a faint smell of the drains! The Hotel du Vin chain seems to be past its best, which is a sham, ,particularly as we never got to stay in any!
Having said that the food we had was good and so was the service.
Very enjoyable evening, hidden away and well staffed.
The restaurant staff were knowledgeable about the wine and dos recommend dishes and portion sizes when ordering.
The food was lovely, I ordered the sautéed mushrooms which were very tasty. And I had the lamb main which was equisite and perfectly cooked.
Ive been here on number of occasions and have always enjoyed it, Sunday lunch is also very good.
We found Bistro du Vin by chance on Open Table and were very pleased that we chose it. Very nice dining room, overall good service (staff much better trained that at the Montpelier Chapter round the corner) and excellent food. We will definitely go back to one of these restaurants if we come across another on our travels.
We had a most disappointing lunch, on 16th March 2014, at this branch of Hotel du Vin. The food was mediocre; my main course of smoked haddock and poached egg on top of hash brown was poor. The fish was overcooked and dry and the hash brown had clearly been sitting in the oven for a while, even though we were virtually the first customers there at 12.30pm. The dining area was dingy and lacked character, unlike many of the other branches of this group of restaurants. As I had invited two guests I chose not to make a fuss or complain, as that might have embarassed them, but I won't be going there again, or to any of the other Hotel du Vin restaurants.
Food was excellent and great value Al a carte menu. Fixed price menu was not great value. Far too many staff (eg one brings the wine takes it away another brings it back and pours it!) which made for a confused and poor service.
We loved our experience at Hotel du Vin in Cheltenham. The Christmas menu was particularly good. The sommelier was extremely helpful and knowledgable which added to our experience. Not cheap though but in line with what you'd expect.
Will definitely go again.
A Friday lunchtime in early December but there were only a couple of tables occupied. Food was pretty good but nothing special and prices felt a bit on the top side. Service good but the placed just lacked atmosphere - shame because it is a lovely dining room.
Of the 5 persons in my party only 3 of us had the main course they chose. After ordering mussels the waitress came some 10minutes later to say that all the mussels had gone and another choice for the 2 main courses would have to be chosen. Both ordered French Onion soup they both said the taste was indescribable - in other words horrid.
I would have thought at 8.30pm you would have been able to order everthing on that menu. My thoughts are that your kitchen staff need to keep a closer eye on the lever of food.
We were very impressed with the offer of 4 courses for £22 per head. This included Soup of the Day (no other choices), the market stall (Amazing), a main course choice of about 7 different dishes and a dessert, again about 7 choices. The standard out course - the market stall - pates, meats, antipasti, fish, shellfish, including oysters and crab and salad. We did have an issue with the main courses that they were not particularly hot and my steak had been overcooked. I did speak to the waiter and he was very helpful, he went away, spoke to the chef and then was able to 'do something' with the bill - brilliant, couldn't have asked for more. I will certainly be returning for the Sunday lunch and probabaly other times during the week/day.
Vin & Bistro is a decent hotel restaurant. The food was good. Although it is located in an upmarket hotel, the atmosphere and ambience is actually more relaxed.
Beautiful interior, great ambiance and a warm reception. However, we found the service overall to be very stiff, wooden and un-natural. We were not recommended specific wines to have with our food, which is a shame when a Sommelier is employed. We ordered chateaubriand as our main meal and would say that it was 'average', which is not what we would expect from a restaurant of the calibre. Overall it was disappointing.
