House – South Bank and Waterloo
Lunch is served Tuesday to Saturday when there is a scheduled matinee performance. Please refer to the National Theatre calendar.
As the gentleman sat in the table next to me put it, the restaurant could easily get away with serving whatever as people would come anyway. But they don't serve whatever.
It was my third visit since the NT restaurant reopened as House, and each time I was amazed how good the food is - this time was no different.
I dined alone, service was sleek and discreet and made me feel at ease despite being late for my reservation and having only an hour before the preformance.
The cured mackerel was a delight, very palatable with a silky and creamy mash and gentle textures of beets.
Cod was cooked to perfection, its melt in the mouth flesh flaky and skin crispy, balancing beautifully with a squash puree, romanesco and a sprinkling of toasted pumpkin seeds for a bit of crunch.
Have a go pre show or as a standalone experience if you fancy clever seasonal cooking at reasonable prices. A lot of places in London get away with higher prices and charging you more for it. A standing ovation indeed.
A real hidden gem, food is fabulous, service friendly md efficient. Particularly love the vegan options ... even thought i’m not vegan!
We always enjoy coming to House pre- and post- theatre: and at other times too. The food is excellent and good value. Good service too, with the staff ensuring you are not late for the play. We enjoy the other eateries at the NT too.
Great pre-theatre option. Very friendly service and as you'd expect they are very aware of people looking to get to the various shows on and make a real effort to ensure you get finished in good time. We dined on the set menu and it had a few good options and was great value.
Sneak in while the theatre shows are playing. Amazing food, quiet ambiance
We came here for dinner before seeing Follies. It got quite busy here but service was good. Waiter was friendly and attentive. Set menu is good value and good selection. Food came out quickly which is good as pre-theatre. We enjoyed all our food and cocktails.
It was good to eat here then just go across to the theatre. Saves dashing about too much.
Nice restaurant. Would come again.
Excellent for a pre NT production meal. The food was absolutely delicious and excellent value for money.
Another good meal here. The food is really nicely presented and every dish was very tasty. We tend to go once the theatre has started so it's nice and quiet.
The food at House is going from strength to strength. This is a great place for a pre-theatre dinner at the National, with excellent service and really delicious food.
We had one of the best steaks ever! Admittedly, the other items were not that appealing so we chose the steak but were so pleased we did. The waiter could not have been more solicitous and charming. I've eaten here several times (and also the restaurant on this site before) and it gets better every visit. Definitely recommend for pre-theatre. Excellent!
friendly and efficient staff, knowledgeable and accommodating,an all round pleasant experience from start to finish.
Fantastic eating experience.Delicious food, beautifully presented and excellent friendly and efficient service.Couldn't fault it. Best of all - no loud piped muzak! Thank you, House. Will be returning, definitely.
We had a lovely meal at House just before seeing Mosquitoes at the Dorfman Theatre (National Theatre). The mushroom soup was unusual and delicious and I had the vegetarian main with okra and aubergine which was very good too. Service was good and we didn't feel rushed at all before the theatre.
We had an enjoyable evening at House just before seeing Follies at the National Theatre. I had the chicken and ham terrine which was delicious, followed by the ox cheek which was very tender and meltingly good. Service was good and we finished in time for the play. Definitely the place to go at the National before the theatre.
We regularly visit the BFI where the food and service are mediocre at best. There are few quiet venues to eat near by, that don't involve eating in a shipping container, sitting on a communal bench or being blasted by loud music (yes, we're older). This was our first visit to House, having read some decent reviews, and it ticked most boxes for a more civilised, grown up dining experience. It's upstairs, away from the ground floor crowd at the NT, with an imaginative menu, nice ambience and excellent, well informed waiting service. We note some earlier reviews had bad experiences with waiters, but our experience was entirely positive.
The food is well presented and has unusual choices. We had variations on fish and venison. The only criticism, which is why I've marked the food down, is that all the dishes lacked much in the way of flavour; partly the ingredients, though high quality, were bland, as was any seasoning, which wasn't apparent. As we'd been to an early BFI showing we were in no hurry, but the shame was that as the NT performances got going, the restaurant was pretty much empty on a Saturday evening after pre theatre diners had left. This restaurant deserves a visit and we shall certainly go back - good service, nice eclectic wine list and imaginative food well presented, if lacking a bit of oomph.
The food was good but the portion sizes have increased noticeably and for me were a little too large, in particular the starter. We have used the restaurant frequently for a quick pre-theatre meal, going for the two course set menu. I would only go for one course in future - to avoid feeling uncomfortably full for the theatre performance!
Another good meal here. I go after people have had their pre-theatre meals so it is pretty quiet - but it also makes for great service! The food is great quality.
Fantastic restaurant- no need to be going to the theatre! Great food, ambiance and location. We'll be back.
The standard of service and cuisine in this restaurant within the National Theatre complex has improved considerably in recent months. We were very pleased with the choice on the menu and with the way the dishes were prepared and served. The service was exemplary. The views over the Thames are stunning. Recommended.
I didn't get to eat here as the restaurant was not open when I had arrived. Very disappointed. Please correct the opening hours with Opentable
Excellent food, outstanding value and lovely service - a really good experience.
Very efficiently run restaurant. Very polite staff who work well under the pressure of having to deliver fast pre theatre menu. Food was simple and tasty. Thank you
Very convenient for a pre/post theatre meal. Very good, attentive service. Food fair value for location and quality.
Friendly and helpful staff - food served quickly which was important as we were seeing a play - that reduced stress levels! Thanks
Excellent pre-theatre meal. Fixed price menu was excellent value.
A great evening out. The prix fixe menu left us rather uninspired, so we had two courses from the a la carte instead and were not disappointed. Great triple cooked chips, but they ought to be at the price they are for the size of the portion. A very good waiter on our table too; quick and responsive. Would recommend.
Dined at House before a show in the National. The food was very good, and it also offers a nice atmosphere and good service.
We enjoyed dinner at House at the National Theatre before seeing Ugly Lies the Bone at the Lyttleton. The food was excellent as always. I had the liver pate with brioche followed by the smoked veal with sweetbreads. Both very tasty. Served efficiently so we could get to the theatre on time. Highly recommended.
Great food and drink served quickly and efficiently, staff were competent, not especially friendly but maybe in order to be fast that has to be the case.
Excellent prompt service which is vital for pre-theatre dinner. Great to be in situ for the play and would recommend it to others on this basis as the fixed menu is well priced though the beetroot/goat cheese starter would have been better with fewer ingredients. Coconut curry main was ok. Great coffee.
Great for pre Theatre dinner good vegetarian options easily adapted for a vegan guest and serving staff were very helpful making sure we got to our show on time
Excellent service in one of many great restaurants on site
Great food and service. Perfect for pre theatre dining
House has improved greatly since it opened. The food and service are both excellent and the rude waiters appeared to have left. I haven't always enjoyed eating here until recently. Well done to all on the massive improvement!
An ideal venue for a pre - theatre meal with good but unobtrusive service and attention to timing as well as an excellent choice of menu
A wonderful quiet place for dining. We both really enjoyed our dinner with exquisite taste however was slightly overpriced for starter. For example the chicken liver pate and toasts. Perhaps it could serve more bigger portion and more keen on homemade breads rather than white bloomer toasts as they are not a very expensive ingredients. The smoked duckbreasts were a bit chewy but tasted good. My friend loved the venison loin very much. I realised the 2 courses meal is very tempted. I will definitely revisit !
We enjoyed a great dinner at House just before seeing Amadeus at the Olivier Theatre on Monday. I had the Jerusalem artichoke soup which was great, and we all had the hake--excellent. Service spot on and I also had a delicious bourbon drink beforehand--highly recommended--it had ginger ale in it.
Attentive and friendly service from the staff. The set and a la carte menu offered a wide selection of dishes, and those chosen were very good and well presented.
We enjoyed our dinner at House last week before seeing The Red Barn in the Lyttleton Theatre. Service is always good as they know we are under time constraints. We all had the pre-theatre menu which is good value. I especially enjoyed the hake. And I had a very good whiskey cocktail which was delicious!
We had a pre-theatre dinner at House and enjoyed the experience. The fixed price menu had a limited choice but all the dishes we chose were delicious with sensible sized helpings, fresh, tasty ingredients and some creative combinations. The service was friendly and an excellent standard. The tables are well spaced apart, allowing for relaxed, comfortable dining.
