Had graduation lunch which was advertised at 20 GBP/person but initially charged 30 GBP/person. Was further overcharged by adding the full price of steaks on top of that 30 GDP/person, however, eventually got refunded for that mistake. Food was overpriced. Wouldn't recommend the place for any special occasions. Staff was friendly.

We went to Howie's for the second time last Sunday, after I ran the Edinburgh marathon. Having eaten there once before and really enjoyed it, I purposely selected Howie's as the place I wanted to go to after the race. The restaurant is in a fab location and the building premises are really inspiring. The food was excellent! I'm gluten-free and nothing was too much trouble for the staff. We started with traditional foods: I had the cullen skink and my husband had the haggis, needs and tatties. He also had half lobster for the main course and that looked really delicious. We didn't get round to dessert because we were really full. My husband had also bought a special bottle of champagne to celebrate my finish and the restaurant were more than happy to serve that up to us. We did pay £5.50 corkage, but we both thought that was really reasonable. The staff are really warm and friendly and are happy to chat with you. You don't feel as though you're being rushed. Whilst there, we were treated to someone (another diner) 'addressing the haggis' Burns style for some German tourists. It wasn't Burns Night, I know, but it was fun to watch and gave us some added entertainment. I wouldn't hesitate to go back there again. Indeed, I might visit Edinburgh JUST to go back there. Excellent value

My third visit to Howies and I have to be honest, it was the worst. I booked well in advance asking for a nice window seat as it was for my parents 50th - we ended up smack in the middle of the restaurant. My main course was utterly tasteless and the coffee my father and I had was tepid when it arrived. The staff are all excellent - attentive and very pleasant - so for that reason I will go to Howies again but the overall experience was definitely a let down this time.

I was here for dinner with my boyfriend after reserving a table online. I had a great tomato & orange soup as a starter, and then had the "Fresh catch of the day": hake veronique with grapes and mash potato: really tasty! The Shetland salmon my boyfriend had was very good too, but we didn't like the onion rings, maybe not quite what we expected. Average prices. Overall, we were satisfied!

We have dined at Howies a few times before so had a good idea what to expect. The waitress was so friendly and informative about the menu and took our order after offering us water and extra bread. Howies food is always very good and this time they excelled. I had Cullen Skink for starters, my wife had the salmon mousse. The fish soup was a meal in itself and went down well on a cold day. I had a lamb casserole for main, my wife having the stuffed chicken breast. Both were very good although I would have liked a few extra veg. with the lamb. We were offered a sweet but I'm afraid we were full! The welcoming atmosphere, friendly and efficient staff and nice airy surroundings makes Howies our first choice when dining in the capital.

We booked Howies late one evening, which was very near where we were staying. We didn't expect much, as the other places we wanted to try were all booked until 9:30. However, we were wrong. They were able to seat us a little earlier than our reservation and the food was way beyond expectations. We had the fresh baked breads and the house mix olives and humous. For an appetizer we shared the Scottish Calamari with Asian lime and lemongrass sauce. This was prepared the way I prefer, thin cut, lightly done with an interesting dipping sauce. It was very good, so I ordered another. We had brown trout (2), roast rump of Scotch lamb, and a super salad. All the meals were good. We split some desserts...Howies banoffee pie, Hot Fudge Sundae and sorbet. The wine was good for the price, and we had an enjoyable meal. It worked out fine, and I'd return if in the area again.

First time at Howies and first impressions were that it was a lovely setting. All staff were friendly and attentive. The lunch menu had plenty choice and was worth the money and affordable. Jugs of water on the table at request which other restaurants ive been to dont offer this. Only thing was the Calamari for the starters were on the very thin side, however the whole table really enjoy all the food.

Disappointing service. We attended on a Friday and ordered from the two course fixed price menu. We also ordered a bottle of wine. Some ten minutes later the waiter returned and advised us that the fixed price menu was not available on a Friday, he had previously confirmed it was available and took or order on that basis. The meal therefore cost us approx £10 more. Very disappointed.

Had lunch here on Friday with friends. Our first visit but won't be our last. The restaurant was full and really buzzing. A happy atmosphere with friendly happy staff, always a good sign. We had the 3 course lunch which had a good variety of options & the specials board was also very good. We all had something different and no one was disappointed. The option to byob and pay corkage is great. At no time did we feel rushed nor left out by staff, they had time to explain the dishes and the history of the building! Not easy when the restaurant is full to bursting! I would recommend this restaurant to all. Give it a try you won't be disappointed but maybe best to book!.

I had the pleasure of going to the Edinburgh Waterloo Place branch of Howie's earlier this week when I met up with a couple of friends for lunch. The menu has a really good range of options and is extremely reasonably priced. We managed to choose starters and mains - with some difficulty! - and relished the various dishes of cullen skink, mussels, venison and mackerel which were eaten with gusto. The staff were very helpful, we were not rushed, the venue is centrally located with a good atmosphere - all in all it was a very pleasant experience and so thank you Howie's, I'll be back!

My wife & I very much enjoyed our lunch at Howies. We were given a gift voucher from friends and we selected the 3 course set lunch option and I must say there were ample choices for each course. Staff were very attentive but not intrusive. Food was presented well and portions were of a good size and was also served piping hot. We liked the fact that we could byob & corkage was reasonable too. Restaurant was very busy however at times got a bit noisy. We will definitely be returning .

We arrived a little early but we were met by a friendly gentleman who said ' no bother' and asked a waitress to take us to our table. We were next to a heater so she was able to sense I was a little concerned and offered to turn it down. Every member of staff made us feel special and we were able to have banter with a couple of them, very friendly. I love the atmosphere full of large tables of family and friends with couples interspersed. You don't feel that anyone is able to hear your conversation, there is a lovely low babble throughout. We were served very efficiently throughout each course. We always feel as if it's a special occasion even although it isn't. FOOD...starters, hot smoked salmon, small Portion but acceptable. My partner had Cullen skink beautiful taste of smoked fish and creamy soup, served with bread. Main...beef burger with fries perfect if you are really hungry extremely tasty and of great quality. I had spaghetti with wild mushrooms in a truffle sauce it was fantastic so tasty. It didn't need the crispy breadcrumbs I felt it made it dry through the eating. I did pass that on to the waiter who took it on board and said he would pass it on. Dessert....sticky toffee pudding which made your mouth water from the minute it was put in front of you. I had biscuits and cheese good choice of Scottish cheeses and oatcakes. BYO allowed us to bring a quality wine at £4.50 for corkage. A lovely atmosphere for a relaxing Saturday lunch, thanks to all the staff they do a brilliant job!

The meet and greet was friendly, service was ok but nothing special. I thought the menu was very limited with a small choice available. Portion size was a bit small and side orders were quite prices. Paid about £65 but if I'd ordered any sides it would have bumped bill up considerably. The food was cooked ok, but venison was a bit too rare, but that is down to personal taste. I didn't have time to get it cooked a bit more as we had to be elsewhere soon. Overall not too bad a meal but could do with polishing up their act a bit.

On a cold winter's night in Edinburgh, the warm and welcoming ambience of Howie's at Waterloo Place was just what we needed. We had their Winter Warmers menu before going to a show, and they timed the meal perfectly. I have never had a bad meal here and this was no exception, with delicious salmon and an excellent vegetable accompaniment. The substantial haggis, neep and tattie starter also went down very well with the hungrier among us. Service is friendly and efficient.
