J. Gilbert’s – Wood Fired Steaks & Seafood - McLean
The steak was one of the best I’ve ever had nearby DC areas. We enjoyed the foods and services.
Second time and again back at the furthest corner and too casual for a high scale steakhouse. Service was almost non-existent, overall a forgettable evening.
THey did not honor Wash. Restaurant Week which was in effect on Sunday, so we left without eating there.
We do not serve Lunch on Sunday. We only offer the Buffet Brunch, which is not part of the promotion. I am sorry for the inconvenience. We are offering the Restaurant Week Menu this week. If you would like to stop by we can accomodate you. Bill
We've enjoyed lunch and dinner at J. Gilbert's on numerous occasions, but this was our first time at the Sunday brunch. Outstanding! Even though the place was fully booked (reservations are essential for the brunch), it wasn't crowded, noisy or rushed. Unlike other brunches we've been to, there weren't long lines to get to the tables. And those tables were laden with delicious fare. Thick, juicy prime rib and great custom omelets at one station. Nearby, a generous raw bar. Extensive variety of salads, vegetables, scrambled eggs, two varieties of quiche — all of them really good. At the desserts table, there's a chocolate fountain as well as lots of pastries and fruit. The carrot cake was a particular treat. As if all of that weren't enough, the servers bring you perfect waffles grilled to order, as well as beignets. Coffee, tea, juice, soft drinks included — brunch cocktails just $5 more. After that introduction, we're now certainly looking forward to coming back.
Another excellent dining experience at J. Gilbert’s
Excellent quality of food! Great ambiance and wonderful customer service! We will be visiting again very soon!
We went for Restaurant week. The food good, escpacially the baked potato soup (which should be on their regular menu!) The only thing that was disappointing is that I wasn't able to switch out one of the sides. I didn't understand why it would be an issue.. I ended up not eating any of the corn which they most likely threw away unused and the fries were cold.. the cheesecake was delicious however the velvet cake came with strawberry ice cream which does not go well at all, I would recommend vanilla ice cream. The meat however was fantastic.
The food is always good, grreat service, a good value.
Went in for restaurant week and it was quite the disaster. We had a party of 6 and only 2 of us did the $45 restaurant week special. Main Entree came out before appetizers and plates were taken away leaving food runners to dump entrees in the middle. Drinks and water were not refilled leaving us sucking on empty glasses. Ordered steaks medium and medium well..came out both medium rare, had to send one back. Ordered different sides and everything came out with standard fries and mashed potatoes instead of other sides and baked potatoes we asked to substitute. We basically had all the food taken home in 4 food containers..I've been dining here for past 10 years along with their great Sunday Brunch, this visit for my wife's birthday was a disaster.
One of the best restaurants in the DMV area. The food is outstanding every time I go. And the service is just as great.
We had a lovely birthday lunch for my sister!
Mgreat experience. We went for restaurant week
I don’t know if it was because it was restaurant week and they were just overwhelmed with the volume but I was very disappointed in choosing this restaurant. The wait time was terrible even after making reservations, we still ended up waiting 30 minutes for a table. We were seated at a half table half booth table and when I told her that I didn’t like this type of table and that I preferred a booth, her response was well this is half a booth. Mind you we walked pass a couple of empty booths. Next our server was the worst. When he first came to the table with the bread he was just determined to put it right up against my arm for some reason, we had an empty place setting but he put it right up against my arm. Then he asked for drink order, left and came back and asked if we were ready to order, no light conversation, no asking if it was our first time here, none of that, just acting like he needed to get us in and out, which I didn’t see why, we had late reservations to start with. I went with the ribs, my husband and daughter went with the salmon. My husband order his salmon medium rare. The ribs came out bland and my husband’s salmon was well done. When he called the waiter back over and said to him “I asked for the salmon to be medium rare,” and he said, “and they overcooked it, great.” And took the salmon back, no sorry about that, my apologies or anything. The manager was the only saving grace about this dining experience, he came over and apologized and made sure when it came out the second time that it was the temperature he liked. Overall it didn’t make an expression on us that we would drive the distance to visit again.
My boyfriend and I went for a restaurant week date night and it was lovely! The meal was great and the wine pairings perfect. Our server, Joan, was lovely and attentive without being obtrusive.
Simply outstanding. A classic steakhouse that harkens back to the good old days of dining.
Having been to this restaurant before with good experiences, I would recommend J.Gilberts and will try it again myself. On this occasion though, we didn’t have a great experience. One member of our party wasn’t served when the other 4 received meals. We were informed by the waiter that he looked at her steak and saw it was still too rare so he had the cooks put it back on the grill. 20 minutes later and no steak. Finally, the manager brings it out and says the first try was too well done so they made a new one. 2 different stories and neither accounted for a 20+ minute delay. The rest of us were finished eating when her meal finally arrived.
We have been before and the service was good. The service was extremely slow this time. We didn’t even receive our bread until way after the salad and soups had arrived and been eaten. In addition, we had to ask several times for even water refills.
High quality steaks, seafood, and crabcakes at a more reasonable price than other high end steakhouses. Great drinks and nice wine list. We really appreciate the fact that there is space between tables, the noise level is low, and the service is always personal.
Restaurant week did not disappoint - the three of us had the crab cakes, the baby back ribs and the sirloin - all three entrees were delicious! James waited on us in the bar area and he is the best! Bar area during happy hour gets packed so plan accordingly - can’t wait to go back.
The food was good. I wish I had been asked how I wanted my salmon cooked, it was a bit under cooked for my liking. Service was a little slow, as our waitress disappeared for some time between courses, and other waiters would avoid eye contact when I was looking around for service.
It was great. Our server was very very good! Thanks.
We really loved this restaurant. There are some restaurant we tried during the past restaurant weeks and we never went back, but we definitely will go back to J. Gilbert's. We really enjoyed their drink selections.
We ordered off of the Restaurant Week lunch menu. Our meals were very good, and we were pleased that the host honored our request for a booth. It's a nice cozy restaurant with dimmed lighting which makes it well suited for relaxing with a glass of wine and catching up with an old friend or a date night.
Truly love this place food the ABSOLUTE BEST our server Kiera was EXTRAORDINARY so nice sweet humorously funny. On time with orders remember every order not to mention her knowledge of menu and wine list. Pay attention to her she’s a rising star. Thank you J. Gilbert’s loved the mood intimate setting I will be back
J. Gilbert's boasts on its website that it has been in business for over 20 years, and that many consider it to be the best steakhouse in McLean. I'll stipulate to the first point, but on the second, they're dreaming, though there's no disputing the fact that the place is popular. So popular, in fact, that my first moments upon arriving involved a parking lot logjam where no one could move. There were simply no parking spaces to be had. The valet parking crew appeared entirely overwhelmed.
Despite arriving on time, our table was not yet ready, so we shouldered our way through the huge bar crowd to have a cocktail while we waited. Cudos to the bartender for knowing how to make great martinis.
The interior decor has 1990s written all over it. The stone walls, the fireplaces, the exposed duct work give the place a tired, old school look. This normally is not a complaint for me, because I like dark ambiance in a steak house, and I wasn't put off by it here, but it just looks dated.
I ordered the shrimp cocktail and a six-ounce filet. For $19.00, I expected more than a plate of ice with four shrimp and a tiny ramekin each of cocktail sauce and tartar sauce. For that kind of money, with so little product, at least give me good presentation. As for the six-ounce filet, come on, chef. That 1/2-inch thick slab of meat looked like something out of an old Ponderosa Steak House. In my world, a six-ounce filet from "the best steak house in McLean" ought to be a two-inch high medallion of yumminess. And medium rare is not gray in the middle.
Having driven past this place for many years without stopping in, I'll be driving past it from now on.
Dinner w as excellent and served quickly even though the restaurant was extremely busy. Our waiter was attentive and efficient. Our steaks were cooked perfectly and were delicious. Can't wait for our next visit.
Our reception was professional and courteous; our food was superb; our waiter was exceptional!
We were able to enjoy Lunch during Restaurant week and explore their menu. J Gilberts reminds us to be favorite spot. Now I know lunch is a treat will make a date more often.
It was a dear friend's birthday and I didn't mention it till then end and Stephanie our waitress was so kind as to add a candle to our dessert. Very Thoughtful.
I went to J. Gilbert's twice this week. I love restaurant week! Great deals and the food and service are exceptional!
Nice mood and excellent food along with kind serve. I enjoyed very much.
Maria was mercifully kind while I struggled with last vestiges of a very nasty cold. She consistently provides quality customer service, before, during, and following our meals. Perhaps best of all are Maria’s interpersonal skills — communication, sense of humor, and knowing when a group is deep in discussion and should not be disturbed. She’s a real professional, and always a pleasure to have as our Server!
Great place to meet friends for brunch, lunch or dinner.
Great food experience. I can always count on J.Childs. One of my favorite places!!
Still my favorite restaurant to attend. While the food was fantastic, the customer service, especially our waitress, was exemplary. Even with the Friday night crowds, the food came in less than 15 minutes and was quite delicious.
Finally, since it was my birthday, the coupon came in quite handy and offered a tremendous savings to me (& the cheesecake was so good).
Great food and location. Convenient for us when we want a date night with no kids. Delicious food, good wine selection and drinks.
We had a reservation for a birthday celebration. The restaurant was very accommodating as we changed the number in the party multiple times. We arrived early to check our happy hour at the bar. The service at the bar was awful. The bartender rarely checked on us and was always at the other end of the bar which made it impossible for 2 in our party to order any of the happy hour special foods. We asked questions and the bartender did not answer. Ultimately, the party who arrived early was able to try some oysters and lobster claws. The lobster claws were the worst lobster we’d ever had and the oysters were decent. We got to our table and ordered a bottle of wine which the server gave an awkward talk on how we weren’t allowed to taste it - fine. It was just very awkward. 3/4 ordered from the prix fixe menu and one ordered a soup and entree. All of the food was delicious. Our biggest complaint was the service. We were done with our dinner for 20 minutes before our server asked us about dessert and then done with our desert for 15 minutes before checking on us again so we could get the check. We will definitely return to try again.
Good food, nice wine, great service and a fun evening.
Michelle is a great server.
Very nice birthday and anniversary celebration. Kiana was a terrific server..
Food always delicious
