J Sheekey - The Restaurant
I have been going to J Sheekey for over 10 years. It is consistently excellent. certainly not cheap but very good fish and seafood and service.
I love this restaurant, one of my favourite places in Covent Garden. We had a really great dinner on Monday evening. The menu is exceptional and is accompanied by an excellent wine and cocktail list. I will certainly look forward to going to J Sheekey again in the near future. Thank you.
A first come back after many years was just as great as I remembered it. Great food (we had a plate of fruits de mer to share - huge and very fresh), attentive and courteous service. Some items are a bit pricey for what they are but the overall experience is worth it. Will definitely be back again.
One of my favourite places just got better!
J. Sheekey has managed to retain all its charm and character whilst upgrading the decor and lighting to great effect. The food is as good as ever, the service is warm, friendly and professional under the watchful eye of Maitre D' Joel. Sheekey's is like a little oasis in the hustle and bustle of London's West End. It has a buzz reminiscent of the best New York restaurants. It has not only survived the pandemic it is thriving - well done!
Table to small
Service non attentive
Oysters sent back as off
We eat out in many places and this is the 1st for a long time I’ve written a review.
J Sheeky is living on an old reputation.
Waiters are non responsive.
Attention is poor
Wine is overpriced and getting your glass topped up an experience of having to ask.
We had tempura prawns which are basically battered not light but just battered ,large and tasteless.
The oysters were on last legs to us returning them as the smelt rank
The soup was actually ok.
We cancelled our main and went elsewhere.
The tables are so crammed in that the safe distance rule has disappeared and the ,were greedy and feed more attitude clearly has returned.
We ended up at a place called 10 cases .half the cost and beautiful.
Clearly we wont be returning there.
Can’t believe I haven’t been here before, oysters amazing, service spot on
Fun place with a good atmosphere and well executed food
Allowing dogs on the terrace is also a great plus 😀
Super restaurant. Very busy and a little noisy. Great food and service from door staff to reception and waiters.
Excellent food but a bit overpriced
The most amazing experience, I took a friend who was hospitalised for sixteen months due to long covid illness. My friend lost the ability to walk and stand straight. This was the first outing and the evening was made fabulous by the staff.
From the moment we went in, the J Sheekey staff greeted as, took our coats, sat us down and made sure we had a great evening.
Thank you all .
Not as good as it has been in the past, felt a little tired. Seated very close to other diners during Covid even though there lots of available tables. Was good but not great.
One of my favourite restaurants anywhere in the world! The food is always excellent, and a great choice of wines. The service is always excellent and the staff knowledgable about their food and wine menus.
Really lovely dining experience from start to finish. Very welcoming and attentive (not too attentive) staff. Food was spot on. Wine recommended by our server was perfect. We went for dinner pre theatre and sat outside. Really relaxing.
The service unfortunately was very slow, not very attentive staff, we constantly had to ask for things more than once, bread, wine, to clear the table, to get the bill!!! They were clearly understaffed. The food however was of very good quality and we enjoyed all of it. Would highly recommend the restaurant for the food but they really need to do something about the service!
Amazing service and great food recommending to anyone who will listen
20 minute wait for a table when we arrived on time for a reservation and had an early start the next day. But otherwise very good, excellent food, good service
Service was a little slow and table was next to the pass which was very busy. Food was excellent.
We had dinner to celebrate our younger daughter’s graduation. The food was excellent and the service attentive and friendly. We had a lovely time and our elder daughter, who is a wheelchair user, was impressed by accessibility.
A wonderful welcome. (As usual).
Everything to my liking
See you again in 15th
The restaurant is definitely looking tired and needs a complete revamp.
However the food is too a very high standard and didn’t disappoint.
The only issue I had was the service provided by one individual who just was not there. The lights were in but no one was home. Got my food order wrong. Didn’t bring condiments, even after I asked again. Didn’t finish my bottle of Ruinart.
All the photos around me of various famous people would only be recognised by older people like me. And they’re all dead.
But the food is very good.
I realise staff are in short supply but I’ve never experienced such disappointing, albeit friendly, service here before. One older man, who filleted our turbot, was excellent and clearly vintage Sheekey’s, the others were hopeless. Lots of manager type staff running around ineffectually and table service was amateur. It seemed as though the kitchen was lacking staff as the food took ages.
This seems to be a universal problem post lockdown/Brexit but it needs to be addressed.
I thought the sides were expensive for the amount of food offered but nobody comes to Sheekey’s for a cheap meal!
Friendly service marvellous food so handy for post thestre
Fabulous food. Will be back, could become a regular!
As always a absolutely wonderful experience. The food, drinks, service and of course the restaurant have never let me down.
A touch of luxury to our weekend away. So well looked after were we I simply didn’t want to leave! The service, food, ambiance was all second to none.
I enjoyed the sticky prawns which were delicious and not too spicy to take away from the delicate meaty prawns themselves.
Highly recommend the Turbot which my partner and i thoroughly enjoyed. Being northern I cannot enjoy a fish without a few fried potatoes….. I did expect these to be more like parmentier than chips but they were standard skin on chips, delicious nonetheless.
We didn’t opt for dessert on this occasion but instead enjoyed a lovely cocktail to round off the meal.
Perfect for a special occasion.
Amazing food, amazing service. All in an amazing experience. Love this place :)
I had heard great things about this restaurant but I was very disappointed. I visited with my wife and daughter early one Saturday evening.
The service is chaotic and poor - the waiter delivered the wrong drink for my daughter and it took a while for a replacement to be sent. The waitress helpfully says oh it’s because no one listens to what I say and ask for.
My wife and daughter shared a large portion of scallops for starters - no plates were provided so they used the small bread plates. Then the waitress cleared the plates as my daughter was still eating.
My wife and I both had the grilled fish platter - there was hardly any meat on the lobster and we certainly were not full after finishing it.
My daughter had the salmon which was nice but missing the broccoli which was noted on the menu.
The wine list is overpriced - I understand a restaurant needs to be make a profit but the mark ups applied to each individual bottle is eye watering. To add insult to injury the waitress opening the bottle we had ordered spent nearly 5 minutes trying to open it to no avail to be relieved by another member of staff.
Interestingly the table behind us complained about the lack of ketchup and received complimentary chocolates at the end of of the meal.
There is an abundance of staff so I think it is a lack of training rather than lack of bodies.
The bill then includes a £2 surcharge per person on top of a tip - I find this practice unacceptable when the prices are already so inflated.
Finally on leaving the restaurant one of the managers who had held the door open for all other customers and wished them a good night turned his back on us - only a small point but indicative of staff not bothered about all customers.
Sheekey has been one of our two top-favourite restaurants for years. They have just completed a very nice refit and update, and absorbed the Atlantic Bar in the process. All good. The food is excellent and full of nuanced flavours and the same great staff are back after lockdown.
Problem is the lighting. It used to be subdued in the evening, but the famous Sheekey nuance stays only with the food. It used to be a great venue for date night. Last night, at 10pm, we almost needed sunglasses. They’ve installed high wattage recessed LED lights everywhere and it’s brighter than daylight. Great design and food let down by the lighting designer for KFC Oxford Street. The backlit counter is great but also too bright. It really destroys ambiance. I heard other customers commenting on the same thing. Change the lights or find the location of the dimmer switch panel, or it will cost customers. Oh, and please bring back the cheese soufflé!
Sat at the bar but still got first level service. The food was delicious and sitting at the bar is like a show watching them prep foods! Top tier food, service, and drinks!
An all-time favourite - classy, lovely, delicious.
Good ambiance in a London landmark. Food was Ok but a little steeped in price but excellent service
Pre theatre - staff accommodating - food good but a little rushed
Fab food - service when there was good - rather too much chatting to themselves and not enough looking at the customers - felt ignored !
I love J Sheekeys but last night was disappointing. Greeter was new and system wasn’t working so we were sat next to serving area on table for 4. Waiter was charming. Food was luke warm and we sent it back. Despite being sat next to service area, it wax sometimes difficult to get attention. It was a generally disappointing experience
Monk Fish & Tiger Prawn Tikka Marsala main ..... superb!
Daughters West End debut.
We had a fab time. The food was sublime and the service great. Will definitely be going back. Loved the ambience too. It delivered the whole package.
What a strange experience at J Sheekey - I will stick to Bentley’s and Scott’s in future.
The positives were the food (excellent as always) and a truly outstanding Waiter, attentive without ever being intrusive - an incredible asset to the restaurant.
The negatives - the main dining room was open but not remotely full and I had to ask to move tables twice before we finally sat down.
Why were we being shown inferior tables next to serving areas - quite unbelievable and a real lack of intelligence from the Maitre’d and team.
I also have to mention the seating on banquets- time to spend some money as they were extremely uncomfortable and need replacing - it was reminiscent of being on an old 1970s Coach or having dinner sat at the table on an old VW Camper Van.
I have never had supper in London where I felt I was constantly sinking into a seat in this way - time for Richard Caring to get his chequebook out - the worst seats in any restaurant I have experienced globally in over a decade.
Lovely as always , alway find the wine a bit pricey
Excellent Great service as always fantastic fish choice
