Josef Sheekey was a seafood stall holder who first opened an oyster bar on St Martin’s Court in 1896. The restaurant was restored to its former glory in 1998, its four inter-connecting rooms hung with original pictures of actors from throughout the 20th century that reflect its central position in the theatre world. Both casts and audiences flock here for immaculately sourced and perfectly prepared seafood.

Too noisy for conversation although we had asked for a quiet table. Food very average. Service was OK but the waiter forgot a drink that was ordered. Nice ambience and good place to take visitors to London.

Wonderful food, faultless service that was friendly, attentive but not intrusive.
It isn’t a cheap venue but it is a beautiful restaurant and worth every penny.

Iconic seafood restaurant set in the middle of theatre land. The staff were attentive and discrete. There is a separate vegan/vegetarian menu upon request which was varied and interesting. Recommend for quality seafood. There organised a birthday plate for my friend with truffles so that was a really nice touch. Will definite return.

Very tight fit, noisy and too much of other people’s conversations. Not a place for any kind of intimate conversation, be it romantic or business.

Really enjoyed the set lunch which was good value, however the wine and beers are expensive. Service was excellent but the tables are pretty close together so definitely not romantic.

Since our last disappointing visit, a return to something approaching top form. The discreditable cover charge is still in place, and the service a little cavalier and unengaged at times, but the welcome on arrival was back in place, the restaurant hummed like a well-organised beehive, and the kitchens did ample justice to crab bisque, gravadlax, halibut on the bone, and tuna alike. Prices are still high, but overall the restaurant is doing what it is well-known for: classic fish dishes well conceived, well cooked and well presented. PerM

We love this iconic restaurant, where you can always be assured of a great dining experience.
Yesterday we enjoyed the set menu, fabulously fresh ingredients, huge mussels and prawns , great green veg.
We shared a beautiful creme caramel, an excellent finish.
Our experience was spoilt sadly by the staff, normally they are very welcoming and chatty.
Our waiter was practically monosyllabic, in fact we wondered if he actually understood us !

A lovely place to have lunch with a friend. The set menus of 2 or 3 course are excellent value, however the wine is expensive. The cheddar souffle with parmesan cream was too die for. My steak was wonderful. The service was very good but a tad too attentive - this interrupted our conversation. Overall, a lovely restaurant and worth a visit.

Being a fishy, I've always wanted to try J Sheekey and I was not disappointed. The atmosphere is comfortable and affable with an air of a restaurant that knows it's heritage and importance. With the pre-theatre crowd leaving as we arrived, there was still a buzz of activity. Service was good and attentive and of course the fish was superb, fresh and well cooked. Overall it more than met my expectations at a very fair price for cooking and ambience at this level.

Disappointing set menu. Nothing from the mains that I could choose, and nothing from mains or starters that one of our party could choose. And we like fish restaurants!
Wines very expensive for an ordinary wine, but that’s to be expected I guess

We have been coming here since the early 1980's and it never fails to please. This one was a visit after a matinee performance of All About Eve in the theatre next door.

A nice dry martini at the Atlantic bar to start as we arrived early. WE ate in the original restaurant room where I proposed to my lovely wife back in 1982. My starter of razor clams was brilliant. At £15 this sounds expensive but it was a massive plateful. It's one of their specialities and is only available in season.

As it was Valentines day we opted for their shared shellfish platter which was huge and exceptionally good and all incredibly fresh. We also opted for a half lobster in addition which to be frank was unnecessary but good. Lovely pink fir apple new potatoes as a side. The enormous crab was perhaps the best I have ever had. 10 or 12 native and rock oysters included - brilliant. Dublin bay prawns, prawns, clams, cockles, whelks, mussels. All fab and great home made sauces and mayonnaises.

Our waiters were totally charming. The ambiance is wonderfully comfortable and retro.

No celebs this time but there are usually one or two...

Altogether excellent and we will hopefully keep returning!

I was first introduced to Sheekey's 5 years ago and have visited several times since. It is our favourite special restaurant. We have always had a great meal there with discreet attentive service whether dining off the a la carte menu or on this occasion the special £30 Valentines Day lunch. The food, as with previous occasions, was superb and with an ambience that is calm and quiet. Because the restaurant is divided up into so many small areas the period décor absorbs any noise, so one can talk without being overheard even though the tables are quite close together. A great place to go and really enjoy your meal.

We enjoyed our lunch at J Sheekey immensely. It is so nice that it has kept its great classical decor and you are made to feel very welcome indeed. The food is also classically delicious not attempting to be trendy or outre. It is a real treat to visit.

It's been years since we had last been and if anything, our experience was even better than I remember from before.
I'll start with the only negative I have, it's a bit compact in places - our table seemed a bit tucked away and there was little space between the adjoining 3 tables around us.
Despite this, the staff moved expertly and quickly around us and the others to provide the very best of service.
The food itself was an absolute delight: the a la carte dishes were good and the specials spectacular with the fish cooked perfectly and with wonderfully complimentary sauces both in terms of flavour and texture.
We had sides of mashed potatoes and chips that worked really well with our respective dishes and were also cooked to perfection.
Wine selection is very good and the Sancerre we had was excellent.
I'll not be waiting so long to visit again!

Remains one of my favourite restaurants. Professional courteous service combined with good food. I seem to remember the fish pie used to have more fish and less potato, but its a small gripe. Overall a very civilised way to have lunch. Thoroughly recommend.

Booked for the set menu offer. Had to ask for the set menu (in the hope that we we order something more expensive). Had steak (very fatty) with chips, which amazingly were oven chips! Certainly not made on the premises

It was our wedding anniversary - as we walked out the maitre’d said we had left too quickly and missed the chocolate truffles they had prepared for the table. Overall disappointing
