J Sheekey - The Restaurant
Last lunch before Tier 3 restrictions. The food here is consistent with any high quality British fish restaurant. The dressed Dorset crab is delicious. The service is good, but perfunctory.
The fish was lovely but although the restaurant was rather quiet because of covid restrictions- the staff seemed rather distracted and at one point we were forgotten at the bar.
Food was extremely expensive- £259 for two.
It was really nice but the vegetables were way to oily. Great if you like butter!
My client loves fish but had never been here. He has now declared it to be his favourite London restaurant. J Sheekey somehow manages to combine old-fashioned levels of service and top quality fish with a relaxed atmosphere that makes for a convivial evening. I very much hope they survive the current situation and I will be back a soon as they reopen.
One of our favourite seafood restaurants in central London. Fantastic service and amazing shelfish.
Fabulous service even with face masks friendly staff, food was amazing. Great time
Wonderful atmosphere and felt very Covid safe with naturally partitioned alcoves and glass panels at the round bar. Excellent starters the cheddar soufflé and stone bass cerviche were delicious and mains of fish stew was lacking a bit in fish but the plaice schnitzel was great. Wine expensive there’s little great under £60 a bottle so with cocktails and dessert and service not much change in £300 for 2. A great destination restaurant though
The restaurant that reminds you how dining out can be a joyous and special occasion. It's been a few years since I've been to Sheekey, but the moment you walk in the door the familiarity embraces you like an old friend. This is still the classiest, most effortless service in London. The food continues to be what you want from a fish restaurant - a showcase for the fish, just that, no need to add Michelin frills. The oysters are superb, and the wine list just begs you to go for something a bit special. Happy lunch, happy days.
Always amazing service, beautiful food and a perfect atmosphere. Such a treat! Thankyou Ludo and team 😘
We were very well attended to and that made it a memorable special occasion. The food was delicious and the gentle ambience just right - the attention to guidelines in such an intimate space must be really hard to manage but the staff did so admirably. Thank you.
Excellent Dover Sole and crab burger. Well spaced tables. Superb food.
Great service and sense of occasion and a very good value set lunch. The roscoff onion pie with truffles was a gentle revelation. Thank you.
It was the second time we came here. But this experience was not as good as the first time.
First the service was poor. Our table was not ready on time. They asked us to wait at the bar. We waited for 30 minutes and they didn’t offer us a glass nor any snack to apologize for the wait...When seated, a waitress asked us if we wanted water. We asked for a sparkling one... she never came back. A second waiter came to ask us again and finally brought us water. After 20 minutes in front of the menu we had to call a waiter to take our order. Food came fast but I have been really disappointed with the quality of food. The stone bass ceviche had been replaced by salmon ceviche which was good but basic... salmon, lime and avocado. Anyone can do it at home. Nothing special, no restaurant twist.... the dressed crab was good. Then we had thermidor lobster which was small and average but it was served with chips...which was Mc Donald quality... so disappointing! I think they were straight from the freezer. My husband had a cod which was good. Dessert we shared an apple pie, which was basic. Nothing special. But the bill was special!!! Over 220£!!!!!
Really disappointed from this restaurant... I won’t come back soon....
Amazing night, great food and service. Can't wait to go back.
Great experience.
Superb standards as always. Carlingford oysters were fabulous with a glass of Ruinart. The gravadlax starter and the cheese soufflé were delicious. The main of the whole turbot for two was beautifully cooked.
Tip. There is a magnificent Puligny Montrachet on the menu by the glass which is just perfect with white fish.
Despite booking ahead only an outside table was available, which shows the continuing popularity of J Sheeky, in the face of some tough competition. Given the consistent quality of the food and the high service standards I am not at all surprised.
Pure class.
If I could give this 6 stars I would.
Booked an outdoor and couldn’t honour it! Serious issue given Covid restrictions
Great restaurant with great staff. One of my favourites.
a great evening
would recommend
look forward to going back
This is a good restaurant with great food good service and a nice atmosphere
Always outstanding! A total pleasure
All a bit of a disaster last night (4/11/2020) At no fault of the front of house team at J Sheekey but I suspect Caprice Holdings the restaurant was hugely overbooked given the mad dash for a final pre lock down supper and just couldn’t cope.
Large queues to enter the restaurant even with a reservation. We had to wait 45 minutes for our table and despite ordering straight away there was a long wait on our food.
Our starters were cancelled without telling us given the fast approaching 10pm curfew. Constant chasing / asking for bread, water. Call me fussy but I don’t expect to pour my own wine when. I’ve paid £180 for a bottle of burgundy (my 4th choice as so many had sold out resulting in being considerably up sold).
The staff were clearly stressed out knowing that they were delivering a much below par service.
Our fellow diners appeared to be experiencing the same thing with food being served cold, not at all, no drinks. It felt a bit like a Fawlty Towers sketch.
I’ve been coming to JS for almost 20 years so I do know this is a one off and it won’t put us off coming again but it really was a bit of a disappointment on this occasion.
The food we did get served, as usual was excellent and as a gesture of goodwill the GM did comp a number of drinks and service charge (which was appreciated) but I’d rather have paid in the full and had the usual JS experience.
The food was great but the service was really poor, had to try and track down a waiter anytime we wanted anything, and were left waiting for ages at almost every stage of the meal.
A standard in London but feels like it is trading on its reputation and really needs an upgrade - food quality is good but not exceptional and they could definitely present it in a more professional way eg. net on the lemons, posher plates, more luxurious decor (the oak panels are nice). Seems expensive for what it is.
Poor service from such an established institution.
Understand it was the night before lockdown #2, but I don't expect to spend £500 and experience this cold, amateur service.
From an unfriendly greeting to missing eating utensils, incorrect food and drinks orders to food continually being served to the wrong diners, this was a comedy of errors, without the humour.
To top it off this was a special occasion (which wasn't acknowledged despite being clear on the booking) and the maitre d' seemed disinterested when raised during the meal and afterwards - he did say he'd be in contact so this is his aide-memoire.
Such as shame as the food was top notch as always.
Nice food but not worth the money. Very poor service at bar. Not even asked if we wanted a drink. Saw waiter twice. Won't go back
Lovely food and immaculate service in a classic fish restaurant. Eye wateringly expensive but there is no doubt you can see what you are paying for. All in all a lovely evening.
Great food and service - just could use a little less salt in the dishes!
Always amazing, lovely welcoming staff and the food is incredible, two of us had the skate special which was brilliant
We had a lovely lunch sitting at the counter. Definitely a little quiet due to COVID etc., but the staff did their most to still make it a lovely experience. Amazing seafood - it’s not cheap but hopefully you know that before you reserve ;)
Daisy was excellent and exceptional ,food was amazing ,wine 🥰
I can safely say after my dressed crab as a starter, lobster Thermidor for main and honeycomb ice cream for dessert; it was the best meal I’ve ever had.
And even though I wouldn’t say the meal is cheap, I can say I’ve payed over £100 more and not been full, and I am very full from that lovely meal
J Sheekey is a slick COVID safe operation. Seamless temperature checks (no gun to the head here!) on entry and staff masked and well versed in distancing meant the pandemic didn’t get in the way of dining and socialising. (Boring but necessary part of review done)
J Sheekey remains one of the best restaurants in the world. Everything was perfect; my Amex bill testament to the fact we had a lot of great food and wine! Plaice schnitzel, lemon sole, squid, crab, oysters were all amazing. Service exceptional .
Timeless classic! Great food and service as always. Highly recommended.
We had a great night at J Sheekeys with friends for dinner, great location and excellent food.
Wednesday evening dinner. Lovely food and good service but a little on the £££ side for what it was
One of my favourite restaurants in London, the food is always spot on. Attentive service, as one would expect, a thoroughly pleasant way to spend a lunchtime.
Covid safety measures and clarity was very good.
Our table was poor - 2 feet from the buckets/trays where uneaten food was cleared into (left until filled before being moved).
Service staff were pleasant however our bread came after our starters and our drinks as we were finishing our starters.
Starters (squid dish and mozzarella dish) were OK.
My wife’s steak was unevenly cooked - veering from med/rare to barely blue.
My lemon sole was decent but again, the final quarter of one half was very mushy/poorly cooked.
Average enough stuff for the price
Intimate dinner for two in one of the West End's most iconic restaurants. The fish pie was as good as previous reviews suggest and the oysters and plaice were delicious. Nice to have properly prepared oysters for once ! As for ambience, sitting in a corner table were famous names have dined just added to the experience. J Sheekey is simply one of those timeless and faultless jewels on London's culinary scene.
We left the restaurant very full with the finest seafood plater really went well with the Nytimber English sparkling wine
Definitely back in December
Great staff, great food - a great experience.
