Jack Astor's - Toronto (John St)
In all seriousness, we take real pride in our food. Try our Cluckin’ Fresh Chicken Fingers, made and seasoned with fresh, never frozen chicken tenders. This isn’t run-of-the-mill pub grub. Our Band of Chefs are influenced by a wide variety of tastes and have travelled across the globe to gain inspiration.
But outside of the kitchen, we find it hard to take ourselves seriously. We have an Elvis booth. For no particular reason. Folks, that really does say it all. We’re sports fanatics, music nuts and love a good joke. If you’re into at least one of those things, we should hang out.
One would think that a restaurant that was closing in a week, and was now limiting there menu greatly, might mention that when taking a reservation. Nope. So even though I enjoy Jack Astor's at home, was greatly disappointed here and did not stay at all. There are several around but since we had limited time before our show we ended up going elsewhere in the neighborhood (Fox and Fiddle...fun fact...full menu).
I love Jack Astor's.. but this location is HORRIBLE! First, they MUST remove the dust on surfaces!! Its not a pleasant experience eating next to a surface covered with heavy dust layer and dead insects!! Second is a very MEAN girl who was ignoring us when we came in, waited for her to seat other people and she came back totally ignoring us until I said Umm.. Hello!! I am here!! I have a reservation!! and her answer "Oh.. you do??".. They put us an area that apparently was "closed" for them.. so NO SERVERS!! Every time we want to order something we had to wait until our the only server comes back with food or drink! And Yes, we got our drinks after we finished our salads. Will not come back!! Will not recommend!
Great food and service. Food for families. Will eat here again.
Ended up having to go to another Jack Astor's because they had a tiny menu as they were closing the restaurant down in a month or something.
This location is closing in 3 weeks, so the menu was limited and service a bit slow (table not clean before we sat down); we fetched our own napkins and side plates for the appetizers.
It is closing in a month and has a very limited menu. No fajitas. ☹️
This place is apparently closing down soon so they’ve slashed their menu by at least 3/4.
Our server was very nice but we felt like she just kind of gave up on us after our appetizer arrived. Our main course was the poutine which was tiny and ice cold. We didn’t get cutlery or condiments and had to remind her about getting us more drinks. The nachos were amazing everything else was a real disappointment we had to send the poutine back and it came back hit but even smaller than the first time. We wouldn’t go back even if they were staying open!
Our hostess said "we don't usually do patio reservations but we managed to get a table for you", but the only available reservations on Open Table were outside seats so... Not really sure why she felt the need to say that. Kind of made us feel like we were inconveniencing her. Also the patio was empty.
Pregame meal and drinks taking advantage of patio seating
Noise and energy levels increased as game time approached
Staff was energetic and pleasant
Food was great
We were really disappointed with our visit last night. I'll preface by saying that the service was excellent and the ambiance/cleanliness were fine. However, the restaurant recently scaled back its menu significantly in preparation for upcoming closure. This was NOT communicated when our reservation was made, nor is it clear in looking at the restaurant's listing. This put our poor server in the unfortunate position of explaining that some of the dishes we'd been looking forward to would be unavailable. My son, who is a hearty eater, was looking forward to the build your own taco or steak option but children's meals were limited to chicken bites or burgers; even the pizza the server offered turned out to be unavailable. I had planned on pasta but ended up disappointed. Because we were on the way to a show, we didn't have time to adjust our plans to even visit the other Jack Astor's location a mere 1km away. We would have happily kept our business within the chain had we been notified of the menu switch. Again, the food we were provided and the service were acceptable but not being clear on the reduced menu when the restaurant is a chain whose value proposition is, in part, to provide a consistent experience, is unacceptable. Open Table provides a place for notes from the location. This should have been clarified, called out, and communicated at the time the reservation was made so we have the chance to make an informed choice. I'm really frustrated that our evening out with the family was impeded this way.
Our service and the food were great. The problem we had at this Jack Astor’s was that there was a reduced summer menu (which is fine), however, 3 or 4 of the appetizers were unavailable because they had run out of chips which left limited options for appetizers.
The service and food was great; however the summer menu was limited and was expensive for kids as there was not a kids menu or option for smaller portions. The food was delicious, the patio was fun and theb service was great!
They only have a summer menu currently. Which would have been great to know when booking the reservation as what I wanted they couldn’t make.
Our waiter was slow! People who ordered well after us got their food first. He saw we were done our meal and had us sit there for another 20 minutes before asking If we wanted our bills.
Didn't like the smaller summer menu, was too few options.
The summer menu is reduced in size, but the food we ordered was very good. The service was great, prompt, courteous and an overall pleasure. Would go back in a heartbeat.
Our waiter was excellent. Menu too small with limited options.
They recently changed their menu drastically. I would say more than half the items where taken off and they no longer offer a kids menu. Very disappointing! The only plus was the excellent service provided by the wait staff.
Menu has been significantly reduced for the summer “months”. There was a private party very close to us which was quite noisy. Other than that it was fine.
Great food; service was terrible
Service was terrible. The excuse was that restaurant was full. That's no excuse,
Food was terrible. My friend and I both had the hamburger and both felt terrible after and the whole next day.
Worst dinner ever.
Very slow service
Good arrived cold, we believe it was sitting for awhile
Only thing that came quick was the cheque
Our server Taylor was amazing!!! Would come back just for her
Good for watching sports.
Good portion sizes, great value for the area.
Our waitress was incredible. Our food came out right away and she accommodated the fact that we were leaving for a concert. Protect Georgia at all costs.
We were pleased with the reservation process and the follow up call.
The service was great- I really enjoyed the Buddha salad
Charge more than price on menu. Not right
I had asked for a table near a fireplace/window and relatively quiet. That's what I got thanks. The waitress made sure our order was delivered in time for our theatre that night and she was attentive to us, refilling water, asking how the food was and bringing the bill promptly.
Although we had both a server and someone being trained to serve, our service went very well. I had the Buddha salad and it was amazing. My four friends also had amazing meals. A bit pricy though. All in all it’s a 4 out of 5.
Good food, fridly staff and good over all experience!
The place was not that crowded and service was really good. Had the signature smoked burger which was great.
Jack Astor's service was great! My brother and I went to eat here and it was not that busy due to the weather conditions. But we got seated right away. The hostess was nice. The food was also great. Service could of been better though just asking if I need more water and such. But that is all I could say to improve. I would strongly recommend this restaurant to a friend if they are seeing a movie at Scotiabank Theatre.
Meh. Nothing outstanding. Order was wrong. Not worth the $$. So many restaurants in Toronto this one needs a serious menu upgrade.
Appalling in every way. Took 20 mins to have a drink order taken. Food was 40 and showed up cold. A few large groups, but many empty tables so there should be no excuse.
Evening out to show
$19.99 for a smattering of undercooked bowtie pasta, charred, meager chicken portions, served cold, made cooler by waiting 5 minutes for pepper and Parmesan, and for the extra sauce I had to request. C'mon guys that is criminal.
I was very surprised at what a nice ambiance there was at Jack's; I expected the place to be packed and busy, and although we did go on a Tuesday, it was a good quiet, not loud and noisy. It was really nice. Our server was great and attentive to all her tables - as was the other staff there. I would definitely come back to this location - much better for a casual dinner compared to some of the other core locations.
Overall good location and decent food. We had a party of five and would have been better to not have one of us sit on the end since we were in the way of the wait staff. When leaving the welcome staff could smile.
Stopped by before a Leafs game - a little further away than Front St. location, but a lot quieter, with same menu, good beer and very good service.
Original reservation was made for Jack Astors at John St. Done online. Later that day a phone call would bring to my attention of that location being closed for the day of reservation due to construction/repairs. Reservation relocated to Front St/University location. Unfortunately, fire trucks had shown up at time of reservation. Had to immediately find alternate option.
I made the reservation online here at Open Table. But when we got to Jack Astor’s, they were closed for a health code violation! It would have been nice to be notified of this!! We had to walk all over to find a restaurant that didn’t have a wait.
