Sitting at the bar with the master chef preparing one perfect piece after another. Perfection.
Too dark. Requested bar area to sit because there was no one sitting there. Was told it’s booked for dinner. No one sat there until we finished dinner. Disappointing. Second time trying this place.
My daughter’s birthday
Much too expensive for the quality. My neighborhood sushi joint is a fraction of the cost and of similar quality.
As good as always. An east village classic. Nice to see Jewel Bako has maintained it's high standards through the years.
Excellent overall. Highly recommended.
Food was amazing. Staff was very friendly and paid attention to every detail. Ambiance was superb and just watching the chefs prepare the food is memorizing. Definitely would recommend sitting at the bar for the complete experience!
The food is tepid and uninspiring. The sushi chef treats every guest as a sushi novice, setting up all the old-fashioned etiquette. Service is perfunctory. Sake list is limited and with mediocre choices. Fish is claimed to be mostly from Japan but lack freshness and tastefulness comparing to other top sushi restaurants in the city. The price is not commensurate with the food and is in the expensive range.
the food was good but found the service sort of disinterested in serving. also very overpriced for the quality. there are much better options for this price range that i would recommend.
Wonderful experience! DELICIOUS food and great service. I recommend getting a seat at the chef’s table if possible. I’ll be back soon!!
Fantastic sushi with exquisite service, located in a unique setting! Can't wait to head back.
Easily the best sushi we have had in New York. The service was outstanding, everyone was so friendly and attentive. We had a truly great dining experience from start to finish.
Best food and service I’ve ever had! There was a power outage when I came in, and the staff was so organized and calm that I had 100% confidence in them providing a stellar experience. Beautiful presentation and quality of the food. I had the sushi and sashimi omakase. My only regret is that I was too full to order more.
The atmosphere was light and the restaurant’s design made the space feel intimate without being cramped despite how close the tables were. I would go back in a heartbeat.
Maybe I should have sat at the bar - but bar was tasting only so thought I would try a table. Unfortunately, very noisy (maybe an aberration?) which really took away from the experience. For example, hard to communicate with the servers. And little things - not being offered fresh wasabi whereas the next table was for a similar meal (for the prices, would expect...), no ice for the small bottle of sake so it was warm by the end of the meal, etc. And though the fish was good, I expected better at a Michelin starred restaurant - not up to the standards of my benchmarks, Oma in San Francisco and Yashin in London.
Maybe just an off night, might try again, but given how many options there are in NYC, not sure...
My fiancé brought me here for my first ever visit to NYC. It far exceeded expectations!
I can’t wait to go back!
Jewel Bako never disappoints. The food and service are sublime.
We had seats in the dining room but were able to upgrade to the sushi bar, where we had an omakase experience that shows how richly Jewel Bako deserves its long-standing reputation. Excellent sake list as well.
Omakase sushi was very good, the fish was fresh and the portion was big and it wasn't too expensive
We had the $135 tasting menu. One could eat and have a delicious meal more economically. Great care was put into our meal. I enjoyed it but found it expensive.
Ottimo sushi e ottima carta dei vini
Food was good over priced took wayyy to long res was at 7 didn’t get my bill till 920
Outstanding experience, recommend to all who likes sushi.
I took my friend for the prestige omakase. Suffice to say we were both mind blown - quality of the fish, the presentation, the vibe, the service. Unreal and so quietly tucked away from sight! Will be going back for sure. If you want a quick trip to Tokyo without leaving the East Village, this is your spot.
The sashimi was great, the service was correct. I recommend it!
What a wonderful dining experience. The sushi is excellent, and the service impeccable.
👌🏻 lovely chef and waiter
The food was good but the service was pretty slow. That being said the waiter was nice and helpful.
Calidad precio algo elevado
The place was very fancy and the decor was cool! Staff was attentive since the place was small and well staffed but the quality of the sushi was very average but they charged authentic mid-town sushi price. The cooked food was better.
Most incredible fish I’ve ever had. My favorite sushi in NYC.
Incredible food and exceptional service time and time again.
Wonderful restaurant. Freshness, service and taste all excellent.
We went late on a Saturday night as things were unwinding. The service was very gracious and attentive but was rather disorganized. The staff made several mistakes with the orders but provided complimentary add-ons to compensate. The ambiance was pleasant and conducive to a small celebration. The food was good and creative but pricey. This is probably not a place for someone who would not be able to discern very good sushi from great sushi.
Always really good food. Given that the place was almost empty, service was surprisingly slow and distracted.
Hands down the best sushi experience I’ve had, including in Japan. Definitely in my top five meals - several decades worth of dinners.
We ordered omakase and it was incredible. The fish couldn’t have been any fresher and the chef staged each piece so that the next highlighted different flavor and texture profiles.
Sake was perfect, too.
If you can swing the price, splurge on the 14 piece omakase
Exquisite sashimi and sushi. My only criticism is that I asked for a substitute for the mackerel but didn’t get it.
Birthday dinner for my son who adores sushi
As a Michelin 1 Star sushi house, it did not mete curiously prepare the dishes. The sushi chef threw fishes on the preparation board, not carefully and with full attention put them. The 1st course dish was put on top of the sushi preparation board before being served to customers, giving filthy feeling to customers. Much more attention to dishes, during preparation and serving, is in need.
Absolutely recommend the Omakase here. It was so amazing (and honestly, very filling) I didn’t want it to end. My friend and I also ordered the spicy scallop hand roll and the negitoro handroll, both of which were absolutely amazing.
Believe the 3 star reviews. Very pedestrian. Very disappointed. Nothing bad, but nothing memorable.
Also, they try to turn the tables as quick as possible, so be prepared for extremely fast service
