At tea time (from 2:30pm to 4:30pm), Kai also serves its Chinese Whispers Afternoon tea which is available from our Chinese Whispers Afternoon tea opentable page.
Mild wasabi mayonnaise, mango & basil seeds
Hot & Sour Soup
We are particularly proud of our Hot & Sour soup recipe which has the added luxury of fresh scallops, king prawns and chicken. Please let us know if you have tasted a better version elsewhere
Pineapple and orange juices, passion fruit, Orgeat and soda water
Seemed odd to eat (high quality) Chinese food in bland mostly non-Chinese decor and served by Scottish and Italian staff. Frankly, Kai is over-priced even for the exceptional quality of some dishes.
Always utterly lovely - welcoming to our 9 and 11 year old’s and easily one of our favourite restaurants in London.
Beautiful setting and intimate environment with quirky aspects to support conversations! Confusing menu presentation and lack of consistency across staff team.
One of the best meals for a long time but £8+ for a bottle of beer was a tad too much.
I love the food and the vibe of the restaurant myself and my partner really enjoyed ourselves
Went to Kai with friends to celebrate a milestone birthday. First of all we were almost half an hour late but the restaurant was very accommodating, they held our table and didn't make a fuss. The food was absolutely excusite. Even some of the traditional dishes like miso soup were mouth wateringly amazing. But what really made this a 5 star experience for me was the staff. Each member of staff was so polite, attentive and you can see they took great pride in their work. Everyone greeted us with a smile and they really made us feel like special guests. They even surprised my friend (who was celebrating her 30th) with a little platter of treats which was unexpected. Kai really do go out of their way. A 3 course meal with drinks for 4 people came to £300 but if you're looking for an evening out and want to experience brilliant food and service then Kai is the place to go
The bird design is really cute and the food are all tasty
they were great by getting my daughter a birthday celebration
The restaurant was amazing. Lovely food and the staff were very polite and friendly. Perfect atmosphere for our anniversary. Would recommend Kai Mayfair to all those looking for a romantic evening with their loved ones.
Delicious vegetarian options. Innovative take on traditional dishes. Loved the Chai dish. Deserts were also outstanding. Great advice about choices by waiters.
We live in the north west and are blessed with a growing number of outstanding eateries, all of which represent outstanding value when compared to London restaurants. We visit London a couple of times per month and accept that we need to measure value differently there.
We were disappointed with this restaurant. The food was good, but no element was outstanding and Michelin risk discrediting themselves if the quality of food that we experienced is typical here.
The value was appalling, even when compared to the more vulgar offerings in London such as the Sexy Fish.
Definitely disappointed. We were expecting much more from a restaurant with a Michelin star. Food was good, but not exceptional. Service was average at best. Value for money was poor.
Not worthy of its Michelin star. This is my second time and again it was disappointing. Food is mediocre, staff is ok, carpets look dirty. Form over substance.
Absolutely incredible - we had the wasabi prawns for starter followed by the honey & soy lamb, beef and spring chicken crumble, sticky rice and asparagus- desserts we had the durian soufflé and the delightful chocolate fondant presented like a mushroom forest - everything was impeccable - faultless service, the perfect ambiance and a wonderful extra dessert as we were celebrating my other half’s birthday - thank you for a memorable night we shall be returning very soon!
Great food, great service, we’ll definitely be back!
We booked a table at Kai for a special treat for my husband's birthday. Sadly, we were very disappointed with the overall experience. We have been to a lot of Michellein starred restaurants and this just wasn't up to scratch - definitely the most disappointing one we have been to. When we arrived (at the correct time) we weren't greeted by anyone. When I initiated conversation with the host, he asked me to wait because he was busy. He was rather flustered. We weren't shown to the bar area and no one took our coats. We eventually went and sat down in the bar area ourselves. There were huge stacks of dirty glasses piled up on top of the bar and there was mess on the floor. Eventually someone came over and took our drinks order. We were put on a large table for 4 people, even though there were only 2 of us, so it didn't feel very intimate. No one pulled my chair out for me or handed me my napkin, or any of the things you would expect from an upmarket Michellin starred restaurant in Mayfair. No one explained the menu to us, there was no amuse bouche or nice touches like that. The food was nice, but not anywhere close to the level we were expecting and is grossly over priced for what you get. My husband's lamb main course was minuscule. Food no more special than any other decent Chinese restaurant. Also, as a warning, the side vegetable dishes are eye wateringly expensive, and there are no reasonably priced bottles of wine on the menu - all fine if it lives up to the prices, but sadly it did not. Whilst still eating our main courses, a waiter asked if we wanted anything else from the kitchen as they were closing. This made us feel rushed and unimportant to them.We were served by many different waiting staff - would have been nice to have just 1 or maybe 2 different people. The loos were quite fancy, but had clearly not been checked or cleaned throughout evening as toilet seats were disgusting and tissues all over the floor. We were billed £6.50 for water we didn't have.
most amazing crispy duck in the world, baby bok choy excellent
Food was incredible!
I could eat the sweet and sour pork all day every day!
Food and service were good, but terribly overpriced and zero ambience.
Excellent food and service
One of the most disappointing Michelin Star restaurants I've ever been to (after 60 or so). A handful of the dishes were nice, but nothing I wouldn't expect from a decent eat in local Chinese. It's also extremely overpriced for what you get. None of the polish or excitement you expect from even a 1-star spot. The addition of "gold leaf" with beef on the menu clearly showed that this is an institution built to overcharge unsuspecting tourists who want a London Michelin experience. The interior was quite fun and had a good feel. I've had far better experiences at Hakkasan. This is one of those places that baffles you as to how they got a star and largely discredits the entire system.
We were completely wowed by KAI! Hands down, the best Chinese food I ever had!!! We were visiting London from San Francisco and friends treated us to KAI as it is also their top favorite Chinese restaurant! The foods were fantastic and the service was outstanding! We are absolutely coming back to the restaurant!
Was lunch with my children , really enjoy real Chinese without additives. Great flavours.
This restaurant has no right to a Michelin star in my opinion. The service was appalling and having been made to wait for over an hour to receive only the first of our starters, we were told that we would need to let the kitchen know straight away if we wished to order anything further. Beyond bizarre given that we were waiting to receive our food. Having waited very politely without complaining about the delay once, this drove me over the edge and I made it very clear that I thought this was unacceptable. Their response was appalling. The service was appalling. There is no atmosphere. This makes the whole experience one that I would not recommend in any way. There is no way they can justify their prices with this level of service and atmosphere. I would strongly recommend avoiding the restaurant.
Good food but service isn't great. Missable for the price!!
Highly recommend the salt and pepper bean curd starter and the spring chicken and Szechuan spicy crumble main!!! Absolutely delicious
Food was nice, but not as fancy as we expected it to be. More of a nice Chinese meal than a Michelin star meal. The cashew nut chicken was so spicy we had to quickly eat it at the end as it set our mouths on fire. If we’d have known it would be hot we wouldn’t have ordered it, but there was nothing in the menu to say it would be spicy. The waitress spilled rice over the table multiple times when serving it to us, would have been preferable to serve it ourselves. Towards the end of the meal we had to get the waitresses attention to bring us our wine as it was out of reach in a bucket. The restaurant was really nicely decorated and had lovely washrooms. Nice evening but overpriced for what it was and didn’t quite meet our expectations
The food was excellent - tasty, attractively plated and appealing. Decor and lighting was warm and relaxing, and the service was attentive and polite, appearing only when appropriate.
The weakness of Kai was value - the portions were small; our spare rib appetizer had essentially no content to it and our mains were eyebrow-raisingly priced as well. Even for Mayfair it felt like the dinner was about 50% more expensive than it should have been, at 1 michelin star. Overall I really enjoyed myself but think there are equivalently excellent restaurants in London with better value.
On arrival we were welcomed by a very friendly hostess.
The restaurant itself if beautifully designed and ambience very comfortable.
We had several dishes.
Aromatic Duck 1/2
Both dish very nice
Chilli chicken with cashews
Two different noodles
The mains very good, tasty and flavourful.
Unfortunately there are a few negatives.
The service was very slow, we had to wait a while to order our first drinks and food and I had to poor my own wine.
Minor thing but this restaurant is a Michelin star, my wife hadn't finished eating and they removed the all our plates from the table (big no no).
I suppose you'd ask would I go back, the answer is probably not.
So disappointing! Was looking forward to This experience! The service was TERRIBLE!!! TERRIBLE!!!!! Never been so disappointed in my life.
Food not good !
One of the best Chinese restaurants I've been to, definitely will go again
The food is amazing but some portions can be a little on the small side especially if you're thinking of sharing with a larger group. However, service was lovely, very attentive and friendly staff.
Food was cold & run out of Vodka on a Saturday night.
How can a mitchelin star restaurant manage to do this
Incredible quality of food. Lovely setting , lovely service. Would definitely return!
Excellent food friendly and efficient service. Will return
Always one of the best restaurants we visit when we are in london
Very bad service with servers absent
