In Clay Cross, easily accessed from Chesterfield, Mansfield and Alfreton, is the Kathmandu Ghurka Restaurant, a dining room having more in common with the far off Himalayas than the rather more local heights of the Peak District. Run by a former British Army Ghurka soldier, Prem Bahadur Malla, Kathmandu brings all the flavour of Nepal to Derbyshire, not only in its menu but in its friendly, welcoming atmosphere too. A comfortable and attractive blend of classic British décor and touches of Eastern influence too, Kathmandu’s dining room is a place to relax and unwind with friends and family while you enjoy the delicious offerings of the kitchen. The menus are as diverse as the region that has inspired them here at Kathmandu, combining traditional and contemporary flavours in well presented dishes made using healthy, authentic and exotic ingredients. Such is the care that has gone in to every aspect of the Kathmandu Ghurka Restaurant that the team are absolutely confident.

Nice to be warmly greeted as you enter the restaurant then shown to your table and asked if you're happy with it.
Excellent choices on the menu with explanations given when asked of some of the dishes.
Good food / cooked well and nicely presented.
Well worth a visit

A nice change from the more usual runs of "Indian" restaurants. The food is good but not particularly outstanding, and the portions are generous.

Of the 4 Vegetarian Momos (dumplings) ordered, one was badly broken and shouldn't have been served. Unusually some pork is on the menu, and the sauces with the dishes are very tasty.

The staff are very friendly and helpful and we're impressed by the fact that their charity work which is geared towards the school children of Nepal, is so generous.

Booked a table of 8 for a family meal out last Sunday evening. The service was very attentive and we enjoyed the self help buffet style Sunday option, although the usual a la carte dishes were an alternative for those who wanted specific choices. The wine selection is fairly priced, the evening was enjoyed by all

Been before usually around this time of year. Ask the waiter if they still do the Himilayan Curry, it wasn‘t on the menu but had it before lovely meal. Wife had the Mango Nepal also very nice. Nice atmosphere, book up early as this is a popular resturant.

this was our 2nd visit. The first visit was excellent, this time we were disappointed. Food & service was good 1st glass of rose wine excellent ordered the 2nd glass which to me had been watered down this was returned 2nd class better. ON checking the bill we had been overcharged for a nan which was refunded - how many time has this been done and unnoticed.

We enjoyed our meal, and the variety of the menu. Its a pleasure to have something served 'hot' - sadly many restaurants still cater for the western taste and cannot serve 'hot' food - even when requested. One negative comment: I don't think the papadoms were freshly prepared. May be as it was Saturday the chefs had cooked off a pile to make it easier in the kitchen

We dined here to celebrate my husband's birthday. Excellent service, friendly, polite. Food was beautiful and tasted devine. Staff had put birthday confetti on the table and finished our evening off with a birthday cake and sparkler and song on music system. Friendly chat at the end of our evening with staff. Thoroughly enjoyable evening with great tasty fresh cooked food. Definitely recommend the Kathmandu. You may have a longer wait for food when very busy but least you know your food is freshly cooked to order!

The food is very good and it does look as if they have given the place a lick of paint. The Premises is an ex PH, which is very evident when you enter, but please let it not detract from the fact that the food is good and well worth a try.

Ram! Ram!
We were delighted with the bredth of the Gurkhanese menu. The food was delicious, and the portions were large. The staff were friendly and paid attention to our needs. While I enjoy very spicy food neither my wife nor my fiend do. There is enough choice to satisfy every taste. We will most certainly be returning.

Food excellent, as always. Some new items on menu keeps the interest going. Definitely go for the Nepalese choices; the Indian food is great but the Nepalese is just so different. My 91 year old Mother had never eaten any 'foreign' (!) food previously and she thoroughly enjoyed it, especially as the staff were so friendly and concerned that she should have something she would enjoy. Many dishes come with both rice and naan. I had the MACHHA MODI KHOLA, 'a
marinated white fish cooked with herbs, mustard, ginger, garlic, and a touch of yoghurt, a most popular recipe from Modi river western part of Nepal'. It was absolutely superb! The Gurkha beer slips down very well too. It is not the cheapest night out, but well worth the cost.

We've been here loads of times & loved it but went on a Saturday night & waited half an hour for the table we had booked. Then another 25 mins for a menu! My friends started when starters eventually arrived was missing then they just brought anything out which she accepted because she was so hungry & didn't want to wait another hour! We booked for 7pm and did not get our main meal til 9.30pm. No apology or explanation or drink on the house! It was a birthday meal & birthday boy was really annoyed & we were all about to leave but then the main meal which we'd wayyyy gone past wanting was practically forced on us when all we asked for was the bill!! Same friends meal was wrong again!! Still billed £117!!! Wasn't that busy and was only 6 of us. Really disappointed :/

A really good evening spent with friends - great food, more unusual than your standard indian with some old favourites thrown in. Great atmosphere too our only criticism was that as we got to the end of our meal the staffing level dropped so did the service, we weren't offered dessert or coffees which if we had been we would certainly have spent more.

As we are not fans of Indian cuisine we wanted to try Nepalese cuisine, hoping their spices and cooking ingredients would differ enough not to have the usual after effects an Indian meal, even mild dishes, can leave you with. I was not disappointed. My meal was a beautifully slow cooked lamb, lean with very mild tasting spices. Not sure of what herbs were used.

was rather disappointed with restaurant by virtue of the poor service, felt like we were hidden out the way. the staff insisted on opening a window above our table even though it was cold outside opening it again after we had closed it. then they messed up the order by forgetting our starters, we ended up spending 2 hours there waiting for food, not what you expect with an early booking

The food was excellent, the service was excellent, there was no rush or pressure even though it was a Saturday evening. The staff were attentive, but not hovering over us all the time. The toilets were exceptional - which says a lot about a place too. Would definitely recommend - actually already have!

We visited on a Friday evening and were seated straight away at a nice table close to the window. Menu's were provided and poppadoms/chutney provided. We ordered our food and had a reasonable wait of about 15 minutes until it was served, unfortunately my wife's request for Lamb as the meat option was served with Chicken and sadly the waitress didn't really know what to do about it. We did get a visit from another waiter who offered to change it but we were OK.

The food was delicious and very well presented, I would certainly recommend this restaurant and we will be returning in the future.

Superb food, very well presented. The menu is extensive and something different from the run of the mill. It is not a cheap night out, but well worth the money. The restaurant might not look much from the outside but inside the decor is clean, fresh and inviting... as are the staff! This was our third visit and we will undoubtedly be back soon.
