La Garrigue is a French bistro located at 31 Jeffrey Street, just a stones throw from Edinburgh's famous Royal Mile and minutes away from Waverley station. The restaurant is themed around the culinary specialities of the Languedoc region of France, offering rustic French home cooking with a modern touch.
Since its opening in 2001, La Garrigue has earned plenty of critical commendations. It is a fitting venue for an intimate lunch or dinner experience as well as for small group events.
The wine list is extensive and is suitably representative of Languedoc, the largest of France's wine producing regions.

The service was really poor. We waited 45 mins for food and had to ask for our bottle of wine as they had completely forgotten about it. At the time the restaurant was not busy so there was no excuse for poor service.

Had the Prix Fixe festival special and unbeatable value and food we chose was fresh and delightful. I think a lot of people are put off by coley as a main ingredient but freshness and skill in the kitchen should overcome this if you are prepared to trust these and Garrigue is skilful and consistent. Anyway it was beautifully set off by the summer veg rice combo. Pichets of wine are also a big lunchtime plus. Could be doing lunch anywhere in France at a favourite friendly efficient place where you can rely on good food and great value.

As always, my visit to La Garrigue on Tuesday was extremely enjoyable. I’ve been coming to the restaurant for many years now, usually having lunch there every couple of months, and always bringing visiting friends when they’re in the city. The quality of food is always very high, and little touches such as being automatically served artisan bread and fresh butter makes the dining experience authentic and thoughtfully conceived.

My friend and I both began our Festival Menu meal with the starter of warm cherry tomato clafoutis with goat’s cheese and basil, which came beautifully dressed with frisée lettuce. The dish was perfectly balanced and so light and delicious.

We then both had chicken Basquaise with peppers and olive oil mash. This dish was full of fresh, intense flavours - just right both to comfort and cheer us up on a rather dreich August day.

My friend skipped dessert, but I couldn’t resist the stone fruits frangipane tart with fresh mint Anglaise. I was a touch sceptical about the mint, as this can sometimes be a bit overpowering and make you feel as if there’s toothpaste on your plate, but I needn’t have worried. The mint flavour was very delicate and refreshing and the whole dish was again quite delicious.

With patron Jean Michel’s great wine expertise, we knew we couldn’t go wrong with even the most humble of the choices on the wine list, and the pichet of Domaine de Bertier Sauvignon/Viognier did not disappoint, complementing all dishes perfectly.

In summary, this was a lovely lunch, and was a highlight in a day of several Festival treats.

My friend and I visited La Garrique during the Edinburgh Fringe and enjoyed their Fringe 2/3 course special. One of us is coeliac and still managed to have a delicious piece of 'fish of the day' from this menu and a lovely lavender creme brulee (even the gluten-free bread provided was unusually delicious). Overall a very pleasant evening with excellent food and staff.

We had an early 5pm dinner from the extremely good value Festival menu. The dishes ranged from good to very good. The reason I did not give five stars was simply that I’ve had better food here at La Garrigue several times before and the Festival menu was not at that level.

Had a lovely lunch here for a friends birthday. Staff were excellent - really accommodating when some of our party were delayed on a late flight and wonderful
service throughout the meal. Building is spacious, quiet and bright, with a really nice ambience. The food was fantastic and happily catered for the two vegans. Five stars all round - we would all highly recommend booking.

On 23rd July our experience of this restaurant was ruined by two large parties, one at the front and one at the back, who were both so raucous that we were unable to speak between the three of us.
In neither case was this the noise of people having a few drinks and enjoying themselves; this was simple showing off. The mainly male group at the front was made up of people who were trying to "outlaugh" each other. The people at the back were not a stag or hen party but, indeed, seeemed to be a family. The noise some of them made was a tribute to the power of the human lung!
Thanks, to both lots of you; you spoiled our evening. Next time have a beach barbecue or go on a few fairground rides. Cheaper and less offensive to other people. Or is being offensive the bit you really like?

We were met with a very warm welcome from both Morgan and Jean Michel despite it being a year since we were last here.
The menu was well balanced and the meal we had was delicious . The wine was great quality and value and , as always, one that you don’t get in other restaurants . The place was busy and buzzing and all the staff were very friendly, knowledgable and welcoming.
We mustn’t leave it as long till we return.

We had eaten at La Garrigue many times before our most recent visit. We had family visiting from Yorkshire and as we were spending the day in Edinburgh we wanted them to share in La Garrigue experience. They loved it. The pre theatre menu is very good value without sacrificing quality and the inclusion of Tour de France specials is great. It was also good to have wines from Languedoc, which brought memories of a holiday we all had together on the Canal du Midi. We will be back to La Garrigue again!

This was a really mixed experience for us. Upon arrival, we were greeted warmly, shown to our table, given our food and wine menus and told about the specials. We were asked about water preferences and quickly had water delivered. Everything was going swimmingly. Then our actual server arrived. We had been seated for about 60 seconds when he asked what cocktail we wanted. We explained that we had just been seated and would like a minute to sort that out. He returned promptly; just enough time for us to decide what drinks we'd like while we perused the menu. This time after taking our drink order, he looked incredulously at us and asked about our food selection. We had discussed a starter, so we ordered that, but our waiter hovered and repeated his request that we select a main dish at that time.
I appreciate attentive service, but this was just pushy and rushed.
Things got better after that. The bread was delicious, as was the amuse bouche. The breaded duck egg starter was done very well, but needed a bit of salt. The wine list, while focused entirely on the Languedoc, provided some real winners.
The mains, however, were both underwhelming (I had the cassoulet, my wife had the Turbot). We can appreciate subtle, but both felt our dishes were under-seasoned.
The service however, had now gone from rushed to disinterested, as we hardly saw our server again for the remainder of the meal. The support staff were very polite and efficient in delivering and clearing plates, but we were not asked how the meal was going, we needed to flag someone down to order another glass of wine, we needed to flag someone down again to retrieve the bill. The inconsistency of the service was really off-putting for us, especially with some of the other excellent experiences we had in Edinburgh.
There's a lot to like here, but it was not something we would repeat, unfortunately.

We enjoyed a very pleasant lunch on a hot summers day. The lunch menu is good value but with a predictably limited choice. The olive cake starter was quite dull, but the fish soup went down well. The fish of the day and Osso Bucco were tasty, with sensibly sized portions. The chocolate bavarois was disappointing. Our table for four was quite cramped, but some other tables had a lot more room, so ask for one which is not in a corridor. There is a delicious champagne style wine for which you need to enquire.

La Garrigue was perfect for lunch. We had a view over Calton Hill from our table and ate a la carte because the menu was so tempting. Everything was cooked and presented beautifully and the food is genuinely good provincial French cooking with inspired touches. The restaurant itself is delightful with paintings of the owner's home area in the Midi. Tables are set nicely apart and music is discreetly in the background. Service is friendly and attentive without being overbearing.
