In the world of food and wine, the word “garrigue” often refers to a blend of aromas: lavender, juniper, thyme, rosemary and sage often found in the scrublands of the Mediterranean. This name was a great choice for the restaurant given its focus on the wines from the Dordogne region of France. So, let’s start there. In a word, “wonderful”. In a restaurant I’ve never seen this approach taken to building a wine list and both the white Roussanne and the red Carianne we had were very good. The atmosphere was entirely authentic as well. Very much French café style but with good tables and chairs spaced reasonably well apart. Enhancing the mood were recordings by Charles Aznavour and other notable French vocalists. Parfait!! So, what about the food? All of it was superb and a credit to owner Morgan and his team. My wife began with a blue cheese souffle followed by Monk fish in a fresh creamy clam sauce. I had scallops followed by the classic coq au vin. We finished up by sharing a plate of select French cheeses together with a “vin de noix”, a viscous, French, walnut-based wine. There was nothing to fault with any of it. Fresh ingredients beautifully combined and served with pride. We loved it. Whether you’re a local or a visitor to Edinburgh, this restaurant deserves to host your next dinner out. This was by far the best meal we’ve had in the past week of local restaurant visits. We’d go back in a heartbeat.

Great new autumn menu. Scallop starter was really special and delicious. Cassoulet is always an excellent choice. Service impeccable. A truly authentic French dining experience. We’ll be back…….just as we have returned many many times to one of our favourite dining places.

We popped in for lunch today (26 September). We were welcomed warmly by Raphael, who took us straight to our "usual" table and Monika, on her second day, and who seemed in with the bricks. I had goats cheese salad and then the lamb shank parcel (without parcel to be gluten-free). Rice pudding was brilliant. Tony went off piste with duck liver parfait and coq-au-vin. Two pichets of wine and coffee surrounded all this - as well as buckets of charm and hospitality. In short the normal, pure dead fab, way to take lunch.

We had a very enjoyable evening. The menu gave us many choices and we were not disappointed in what we chose. Service was good and friendly although one waiter seemed to always be in a hurry and wanted a quick decision as to what we were going to choose although this didn't spoil the evening. All other waiting staff were happy to let us proceed at our own pace. We have dined here before and I'm sure we will return.
