Steeped in history, The Lion dates back about 500 years, and was built when King Charles I was on the British throne and even before the famous Gunpowder Plot of 1605. Originally constructed as a house, for centuries the quirky building has been welcoming visitors as a traditional British pub. With its low ceilings, exposed beams and homely inglenook fireplaces, it has all the charm of what you expect from a historic pub and restaurant. Listed as one of the Britain’s most important buildings, this is a slice of history set right in the heart of the Somerset countryside in a popular English village. The characterful and homely rooms offer a comfortable stay for those wanting to holiday or spend a night or two in this stunning part of the UK. We’re also dog lovers, so your well behaved pooches will get a warm welcome. If you are looking to make a booking for more than 6 people, please contact us directly on 01458 832941

New owners? Lovely staff, efficient, good food, good choice. Dog friendly. When we sat down a dog bowl and treats were brought over. Thoughtfully given a table in a corner so even though our dogs are well behaved they were out of the way for guests that prefer not to dine near them!

The food was delicious and our server was fantastic. We didn’t catch her name but she was so helpful and attentive. She was blonde and Polish I believe. Can’t praise her enough, made the whole experience fantastic! We came in on a Wednesday and it was reasonably busy but the vibes inside were great

If you want great food, great service and a lovely atmosphere, head to The Lion at West Pennard. Barrie the Manager has the rare skill of calm running a jam packed pub and restaurant whilst managing to make every customer feel special. We thoroughly enjoyed a lip smackingly tasty Sunday lunch. Roast lamb and roast beef, sourced from Home Farm in Kingweston and cooked perfectly and so deliciously tender. No dried up tough chewy grey meat at The Lion!! Both arrived with lots of veg relative to the time of year. My only disappointment was the roast potatoes and parsnip. They lacked a good “roasting”. Lovely server called Liam replaced them without any fuss. But as everyone knows, roast potatoes should be crispy on the outside and soft and fluffy inside. Work in progress. Puddings were fantastic! We had the frangipani with baby apples (if you haven’t had them before, hunt them down, so tasty) and the rhubarb pavlova which has the perfect balance of sweet versus tart. We cannot wait to return.
