About Le Chardon
With its understated forest-green shop front on Lordship Lane in East Dulwich, Le Chardon might look like just another Parisian-pastiche bistro – but step inside and you'll realise that this historic Victorian restaurant is the real deal. Originally the site of a David Greig grocery store, the restaurant retains all of the site's original wall tiles and is decorated with Parisian street signs, blackboard menus and kooky objets d'art. Romantic and cosy, this restaurant is renowned for its authentic bistro fare and has become the favourite haunt of canoodling couples and Francophilic foodies. Don't miss the Toulouse sausages with mash and onion gravy, and the profiteroles with ice cream and warm chocolate sauce.

Le Chardon Ratings and Reviews
We came here for our anniversary. We had lived round the corner for ages, but (wrongly) always felt put off by mixed reviews. Our experience was fantastic. Excellent experienced French service, delicious timeless French cuisine, and a warm classic atmosphere. It's nice to see that these kinds of places still exist in London. We're just gutted that they'll be closing soon, as we would have definitely been regulars.
Excellent service. Price quoted was £3 higher than the online one on which we based our booking (for 10) . We complained and were told the website is out of date (beware!) - but they readily agreed to charge us the original price. Enjoyed our food - any minor queries dealt with quickly and with smiles.
We've been so many times it's hard to write any more than to say we love it. And that's with usually a 6 month gap in between visits - so hopefully a balanced view! Lovely French cooking, friendly service, and always great value for money in a bistro atmosphere. We will continue to go!
I really liked the menu and the service was good without being too intrusive.
The wine was really good.
This was a perfect evening, we met friends had a lovely meal, the ambience is conducive to a social and positive evening for every ocassion. An authentic French restaurant in a buzzing part of South East London.
What a wonderful evening! Last night was our second time at Le Chardon! I was a little scared about trying to do a good thing twice! Turns out that you can! Everything works in the restaurant! I am not sure how Laura (one of the staff) can be so lovely all the time! Thank you to her and also the other man! I did not get his name. Love love service. I have steak which was cook to perfection! My partner had bouillabaisse! Let me tell you! This was to die for! So much flavour, so rich and so very moreish. Thank Le Chardon we love you we will be back (with friends!)
3 of us had lunch at Le Chardon on a Sunday and each of us had main meal plus dessert and coffee. The bill came to £20 each, including service charge. The food was good. Very happy with desserts. Friend's roast lunch came in good portion. In sum, we were all very happy with the food, price and environment. Thought something was missed out from the bill when we first found out how much it costed!
I just love this restaurant: it is well worth the 40 mile journey!
I tell all my friends that this is the best French restaurant outside France! The house wine's a gem.
One of the friends we took there on this occasion thought the rabbit the best he'd ever eaten. I love the Toulouse sausages & my husband will return for the squid!
I'd like to keep this gastro jewel a secret but that would be unkind.
It was the first time we had been there. Staff was lovely and very friendly. Food is lovely for a 3 course lunch menu good value for money.
The only downside was they wanted to charge £5 to bring out my own birthday cake! Even though I bought it. Refused took it home and did it for tea.
Otherwise would recommend.
Well cooked tasty food and very good service. I was pleased with the little touches which is what makes great service stand out from good. I did not have a starter, which my friends ordered. They offered to share with me and the waitress offered to bring me a small plate of my own to put any shared food on. Only a small thing, but it showed that she was thinking of what made the visit more enjoyable for the customer.
The restaurant was packed out which shows that it is a popular choice for the locals.
The entire bill for 4 of us including 2 bottles of wine and 3 starters, 4 mains and 2 deserts, soft drinks and 2 coffees came to £130 which was very reasonable for 4 people.
I would definitely recommend this restaurant.
I hadn't been to Le Chardon for about 10 years having moved out of the area. We went back hoping it would be as good as we remembered and it was. The food is really really good, the staff were friendly and helpful and the atmosphere was good too. It isn't a big restaurant and the (beautiful) tiled walls can make the acoustics a little strange so I don't know if this is the best venue for a romantic meal but for a small group this is a great place for a special meal out.
We were celebrating a birthday on a Saturday lunch time. The staff were very efficient and friendly. We needed a quick order for one of our party as she couldn't stay very long. This was dealt with without hitch. The food was tasty, the wine was good and the atmosphere buzzing. Would definitely go again.
Le Chardon in East Dulwich was perfect for a Saturday afternoon lunch!
From the front you have no idea there is a perfect little sun terrace out back, which despite the front being on a bustling street, the back is like a calm, relaxing piece of paradise!
The food was great, the set lunch menu particularly good value. Some wine and drinks are a little pricey but all in all, a great visit.
We'll be going again.
