Easy going .. "Stay as cool as you can man". Ideal for those who remember the 70s
I work at a 5 star hotel so I know a quality restaurant when I see one. This restaurant has been open for over 30 years for a reason - quality food and friendly service. The decor is dated, the menu serves old French classics and this is all part of the charm! I really hope there is still room for places like this in the world - the classics are usually still the best! I would highly recommend this place to anyone!
Loved it!! Most wonderful restaurant l have been to in years. Food is magnificent. Luigi the owner is an amazing and charming character. Ambience is a total throwback to the 70's as is the food somewhat but that just makes it all the more special. We will be returning!
Great service and good but so disappointed when the bill came to see a £20 charge for bread and olives
very good food .Very good service.Nice and friendly made most welcome need say no more
Having walked past this restaurant on numerous occasions we finally booked a table and were exceedingly glad we did. The welcome was friendly and the service was attentive but not intrusive. The venue was cosy and quaint and the food was superb and authentic French cuisine. Wine was good value and the desserts were excellent. Would highly recommend a visit and we will definitely be going back.
This place is a gem from the past. I'm not sure the decor has been changed in 40 years and it's not one to visit if you're in a rush as the food is freshly prepared but it's absolutely delicious. The owner and staff are amazing; some of the vegetables come from his own allotment. Dessert was out of this world and if you're into a cheeseboard this Frenchman knows his stuff. I'd highly recommend it if you're looking for a break from a run of the mill restaurant and some excellent food.
Quirky but excellent local restaurant. The menu is short, extended by a handful of specials, but all of our dishes were well cooked, tasty and overall excellent value.
Our second visit and it did not disappoint. On both occasions the food was superb, the service excellent, because it is all freshly cooked it it wasn't the quickest but definitely worth the wait, especially liked the owner's wine recommendation. And a meal for 4 was exceptionally good value. We shall definitely be back and have already recommended it to other friends.
A superb meal meal and excellent value. A traditional French restaurant serving food that is individually cooked to order with seasonal vegetables.
Highly recommended to all gastronomes.
This was like taking a step back in time, very quaint old style french restaurant with Italian owners. Lovely waiter Luigi who was patient, querky and a funny man. Food was very nice. Husband and friend loves Fois Gras, but it wasnt on the menu, but they asked for it since its a french restaurant and they were served up a fabulous starter. We had a great evening, got chatting to other tables of regular customers who had been going there for many years and ended up being the last to leave. Wine list good, menu not too extensive but had a board of specials so plenty to chose from. Would definitely go back, thoroughly enjoyable meal.
We dined on a Wednesday evening and were the only guests there . Our table of 7 got 100% attention of the owner & waiter, who kept us well entertained. Food was excellent and very good value.
I booked the restaurant at short notice for dinner with my wife. We were greeted nicely and then ignored for a long time. The place had a few customers but wasn't busy. After requesting some service we waited for another long period to receive fresh asparagus drowning in butter. When our main course came (after another very long wait) the fish wasn't cooked and my wife's veal was overcooked. We paid for the wine and walked over the road to the Averna Restaurant. The owner was very pleasant when we departed and we left wondering why he hadn't been so forthcoming when we arrived . Marks out of ten '1'.
I booked a table for four people via the link on the restaurants website, and had a confirmation back to say that it was all booked and arranged.
Imagine my surprise when we arrived to find the restaurant shut.
I really wanted our meal to be good because Carlo the owner/waiter is a lovely man in his 70s with some great stories of post war Italy. However the restaurant was only about a quarter full and was a bit chilly. Because there was only him and a French chef the service was slow as they were cooking to order - which is a good thing normally. Unfortunately because the restaurant was cold, by the time the vegetables came they were not as hot as they should be. We didn't complain because Carlo was such a lovely man. The pumpkin soup was excellent (the pumpkin was grown in his own garden) and the home made chocolate mousse was very tasty. Our main courses were OK but with lukewarm vegetables they did not stand out.
The limited menu and specials of the day means fresh cooked seasonal food. Some of the vegetables are grown by the owner, Mr Dioli, who also runs the front of house.
Nice friendly restaurant, good wine list. Not rushed but not slow.
We've been several times and will be going again
We had a booking on Friday 9th Oct 2015. As other reviews have mentioned, it was not packed but I didn't mind that at all. The food is great quality typical French, clearly done by someone who has made these dishes for many years. Presented in a traditional way and good sized portions so that a dessert is possible.
Luigi who is front of house is remarkable (ignore previous comments about bad service, unless your idea of service is ultimate efficiency with a complete lack of personality) and should have retired some years ago, but he clearly doesn't know what getting old is and still does a fantastic job of service and entertaining the guests. He has stories of serving the worlds A-listers since the 60s and even brings in vegetables from his own allotment for use in the kitchen. To have carrots in the usual orange, and less usual purple and white was a treat.
This place is definitely stuck in a bit of a time warp, but that is it's charm and it will definitely be one of my local favorites.
Can't find much to recommend this restaurant. Booked for 20:15 on a Friday evening and arrived to discover that we had the place to ourselves, never a good sign.
Food ranged from uninspiring through to virtually inedible.
Service was pleasant, but the overall impression was that this place has had it's time and was resting on past popularity and success's. Probably time to retire.
We adored this charming little bistro, in an unlikely area. The restaurant was quiet, however I suspect that was due to the wonderful weather we're currently experiencing. Luigi was a wonderful host, charming and informative, the setting is very romantic, and the french music helped to set a wonderful relaxed ambiance. If we didn't look outside the window I would have sworn we were actually in Paris!!
To start I had the Escargot, my partner had the Pheasant Terrine (a special) with a delicious spicy chutney. Mains were Venison with a creamy mushroom sauce, and the sirloin of steak with a red wine jus. We managed to share the divine chocolate mousse for desert washed down with some Armagnac. All in all amazing value for 2.5 courses each, a bottle of Luigi's favorite red wine, large mineral water, 2 Armagnac's, and 2 Amarettos, coming in at the £90 mark. I simply can't wait to go back!
So tasty food, very traditional atmosphere. We really enjoyed our evening.
Authentic fresh, French food. Asparagus straight from the allotment.
Excellent food again - varied selection of specials giving variety for each visit. Owner is a great chap & very amusing making a great & different dining experience
I went to the restaurant with a work group about a year ago and we had a great time. I thought I would try it for
The food .was the same high quality but the service was extremely slow. Shame because it took the edge of a nice traditional type restaurant.
has a definite and appealing character in terms of decor and menu choices. The seating allows ample space and also makes it easy to converse with low noise levels. The food specials are always varied and reflect the seasons of the year. Game and fish are always good options.
Great restaurant, lovely staff very friendly and excelent food.
Food was generally lovely, snails and frogs legs were amazing, garlic soup, way too strong even for someone who loves garlic, could not eat more then a spoon.
Veal and stuffed chicken breast were lovely, cheese selection also very good, was slightly suprised they only had one blue cheese, considering France is well known for blues.
Chocolate mousse dessert and sorbets both amazingly good.
Star of the meal was the Gewürztraminer 2012, absolutely delicious wine.
Did not like that the host, after being given my girlfrirnds hat to put away, put it on his head, don't! It's not yours, end of subject.
Chef here very talented in french food, loved that, do not like the host, want to come back and would recommend but not for a while.
We enjoyed our meal here. The menu and specials boards had a variety of appetising choices, the food was good, the prices reasonable, and the service friendly and personal. We'd certainly go back here if we're in the area again.
I hadn't been to this restaurant for over 20 years but booked it for a business dinner. My colleagues were from overseas and would not stop raving about the place! There were 16 of us. The food was fantastic and Luigi was a fantastic host! His interaction with our group really made the evening. And the bill, for 3 courses and wine was about £45 including the tip.
I will be returning but this time only with my wife!
Dining experience satisfactory but food quality mixed. My main course excellent but my husband was disappointed. Both first courses not as expected but all right Service painfuly slow. Only 1 other couple in the restaurant that evening. Whole experience slightly odd. I would not recomend it, nor will I condemn it.
