Ignored on arrival, so we sat at a table which was not designated reserved. We helped ourselves to menus, selected our main course and ordered at the bar. The pub was near empty but a waiter consistently kept his back to us and when he turned to face us gave us the feeling we were invisible.
The food arrived within a fairly acceptable time. My friends fish was ok'ish. My chicken dish, given as coq au van was very poor. The vegetables were old and reheated and only the limp carrots had a little flavour. The chicken was tasteless and the skin had not been removed, which is standard practice as no one likes soggy white chicken skin. The sauce was worse of all. The colour and taste suggested gravy granules had been used, there was barely a hint of wine, whether red or white was impossible to determine. The dish it was served on was damaged, a black rim around the inner bowl.
In over 40 years as a professional cook this meal is one of the worst. However, to add to insult to injury, the response by the member of staff I complained to led to a very insincere apology. This was negated by her declaration that she was very surprised as this was a favourite dish of their customers, with no complaints at all. She forcefully reiterated this point. The black rim was explained away as caused by the dishwasher and all their plates were affected this way.
The pudding tasted ok, but evidently a pre-made product microwaved. However, it was served on a mini 'frying' pan with a tiny amount of syrup. This was then placed on a flat platter with custard in a tiny sauce boat. More importance and emphasis on 'clever' presentation than on ease of eating. Also, a fork is essential to go with the spoon in order to prevent having to chase food around a flat based platter! We only had a spoon each.
This pub has gone downhill. Poor quality food, pricey and poor service.

We received a very warm welcome, attentive staff, good service and delicious food. The atmosphere is most cordial. I am looking forward to a return visit.

We had a lovely time with our family for a birthday and anniversary lunch , which coincided with Mothers Day. Great food with plenty of choice and lovely quality of fresh ingredients (the kale was especially good) and we all enjoyed the atmosphere. thank you very much.

We visited Ligher Inn for lunch mid-week. We were immediately greeted by friendly staff and shown to our table which was very cosy. The food was excellent and we would recommend to other friends and family.

I've eaten here before and it was lovely. However, on this occasion, after traveling down from Coventry, we weren't told about the heavily reduced menu due to issue in the kitchen. This was a big issue for us, as two of our party were coeliacs and there was only one or two things that they could have. We hadn't been made aware of this. In the end, we had to find somewhere else to eat.
Would give the Lighter one more chance though, as it has been good previously.

Although we were guests during a very busy service, we were welcomed in a friendly way, waited on efficiently and with good humour, and provided with an enjoyable meal which was excellent value for money. We will definitely come back.

The service was great and the food was tasty - though unfortunately the dishes we both wanted from the menu weren't actually available.

The live music was far too loud for any kind of proper conversation. We were sat as far as possible from the band, but still the waitress couldn't even hear our orders or questions about the food. We could barely have a conversation because we couldn't hear each other (we're in our 30s and hearing is not usually an issue!)

Overall quite disappointed when it was obvious (even to the waiting staff) that the music was too loud. If music needs to be that loud then food shouldn't be being served.

The service was extremely slow though the wait staff were running around. I can only assume there were not enough wait staff on. The restaurant was far from full. The food was only average. I had the grilled tuna steak, but it wasn't made clear it was a salad. It was listed as tuna steak with potatoes, green beans and olives. I expected it to be warm. The potatoes were freezing cold as if they just came out of the fridge. the tuna was good but if I wanted a salad I would have ordered one. My husband's steak and ale pie was fine. We had to wait quite a time to be asked about coffee and desert, then had to flag someone down to get a check. We have been going here since the 70's and seen the ups and downs. I think it is going through a down period. The location is lovely, and the decor very attractive, but overall a disappointment.

When we got to the inn we were treated to a lot of care and attention. We orederd a roast pork and it wasn't quite ready as we were a little bit early and the joint was bigger than expected. We were constantly updated. I had the Beef and wild mushroom stew and the flavour was fantastic, good deep earthy flavour from the wild mushrooms used in the stew. And the best part of the meal was the vegetables good to perfection and so good that Kale was used as a veg for a change. Excellent service all round from the waiting staff and the manager Pedro. Thanks looking forward to seeing you again .

Starters (wings & W/Bait) was excellent & the attentiveness of the waitress & bar staff, extremely good. Stake pie excellent but too small (I had large) not enough gravy (asked for extra which received after we had all finished). Veg was totally limp completely over cooked, with no flavour.

We dined on a Sunday and had a table booked for 12:45. There was a member of the party who ordered a pie off the specials board which we were told was sold out ! Not too sure why it was still on the board if they didn't have any. Service started off really good then went down hill. We were left for long periods of time unattended in need of refreshments and ready to order food but the waitress was run ragged and it seemed like there were not enough staff to deal with the number of customers in the restaurant. Took 40 minutes for our desert order to be taken and then a different waitress bought out the deserts but had forgotten one member of the party's dessert. Based on this experience I probably would not choose to dine on a Sunday.

Popular place in a nice location serving good honest food. Dog friendly. We don't have a dog, but it's always good to say hello to other people's dogs. Steak pie was fabulous, all 4 of us had that. Nice bottle of Rioja too. Staff were really very good.

Having booked a week before we were told our table was not ready. That was fine and had a drink but then when the table came ready the wait for food was long. We had a starter to fill in time. Long wait for that and main meal and we had to ask twice for coffee, A real shame as the owner is a delight and they were busy but having driven two hours, food wait which then meant we lost our time at the antique hall. We will not hurry back

I live locally so obviously know the place but came along with my brother and his wife who were visiting from Wales for the evening so it was their first time.My brother has a disability but the staff were really helpful in with us in regards of storing his wheelchair and making us comfortable.
The staff were really friendly particularly the young blonde haired lady that served us who was lovely,I don’t know her name so apologies for that but thank you very much!
The food was really nice not to mention the great beers and we all had a really enjoyable evening and I being local will certainly come again!

The Lighter Inn is just one of those local gems that you have to visit, and on a regular basis. The food is excellent, particularly the pies, and the service is first class. Add to that great views across the river exe and it makes for a great place to visit, at any time of the day.Our favourite.

Always liked this pub. Good selection of ales and good, friendly service.
On this occasion we all opted for the Sunday roast. It was good, but nothing special and quite expensive for that. We all decided on a dessert, which were all excellent but again quite pricey.
