Maharaja of India
Great Indian restaurant near to Leicester Square tube station. They have a very good menu and wine list and friendly waiters. I would highly recommend this place to anyone who likes very good Indian food.
Thought the staff were nice and attentive food was lovely and reasonable value would certainly go back thanks
It was decent.
The restaurant has been recommended by an Indian person and indeed the food was very good. The service did not makeup to our expectations though. It was if waiter were doing us a favour and it's not like as if I'm expecting a fake service like in the USA, but the waiters could be friendly especially with the restaurant not being crowded at all.
We have passed Maharaja several times in the passed, but decided to try it when we went out with friends. Food was quite good, and not over salted. Portions were on the small side. The Tandoori mixed grill and Chicken Tula Massala were tasty. The okra side was nice and spicy. The Fish Goa was disappointing in that there was very little fish...the Garlic naan was a bit bland.
Overall, it was good, and came to a bit more than £25 a person, service included.
I met my friends for dinner here and we really liked the restaurant. They have an excellent menu and wine list. I would highly recommend this place and look forward to going there again another time.
Food was good, but could have been warmer. Table service was terrible.
I enjoyed the meal, it was very tasty there is only one negative comment, one of the waiters kept hovering neat to my table which made me feel a little uncomfortable.
The food was great but the waiter wasn’t very friendly.
The people running the place are extremely rude and have no clue what is going on around them. You order for something, they get you something else. A lady came in asking for water and the manager shouted at her not to enter the restaurant and wait outside. It seemed really awkward to the guest sitting there as well. Extremely disappointed and will never return again.
Small restaurant in very convenient location near some of the theaters. Food was excellent and authentic. You can tell that the owners are totally invested in the product. The menu offers a large selection of dishes and traditional breads. Would recommend for dinner before or after the show but reservations are recommended because it can fill up quickly.
Great Indian in central London. Butter Chicken outstanding.
The food was excellent. My biggest concern was that our table was right next to the gent’s loo, which needs no further discussion!
At the table we had several vegetarian dishes, bindi, Chana masala, and tarka dal, as well as a lamb jalfrezi and a chicken biryani All the food was delicious.
We did ask for glasses of tap water on several occasions, but none ever arrived. That was the only knock on service.
Quick service, polite staff but food was average
I ate here to celebrate a friend's birthday and was pleasantly surprised by the ease of finding the restaurant, the decor and friendliness of staff. My friend had quite a hot/spicy dish which she said she enjoyed but my dish was bland (I cant take spicy and ordered a mild dish but I was disappointed that there was no taste and that the food was not as hot as it could have been). I also have allergies and when I have been in other Indian restaurants they were able to amend dishes so that I could partake. Unfortunately this restaurant was unable to do this and I was left feeling underwhelmed. In saying this staff were friendly and our meals were delivered quickly and we didn't feel at all rushed in this restaurant (we did dine early though and had booked a table online for an early evening meal). PRICES: good - bare in mind that you will need to order rice and nann separately unless you are ordering a set meal which can push the price up a bit - but it is still reasonably priced.
Was looking for Indian on the spur of the moment and they had availability. Overall the food was quite good and reasonably priced for London. Had a bit of trouble getting started - had to ask the waiter for service and our wine order took a bit of time to arrive.
A great find, and so central. Food was excellent, staff very attentive but not intrusive.
Would definitely go back and definitely recommend
Located just off Leister Square, ideal for pre-theatre. Excellent food. First waiter a bit reluctant to seat us in the quiet back but another one was quite friendly. Overall, very tasty and efficient service leaving plenty of time to get to the theatre.
Food is delicious! A must stop every time I visit London!
Good food and service!
This was definitely an authentic experience. Yummy food. Homemade naan - is a key indicator for me! The service might seem indifferent, but, I honestly think it's just part of the authenticity. They were friendly. Quick to take order and server it, too. I felt a bit rushed by the server, who was holding the door for us to leave. He was being polite. I just felt there wasn't so much room for him and us trying to put our coats on. Oh well, I blame it on culture clashes - hence, the authenticity :-) Will go there again!
A nice venue, very handy for the Garrick Theatre. Food was lovely, and waiters couldn't be nicer but service was a bit slow. We ended up having to rush the meal
This is just down the street from the National Gallery and found this on Open Table as we were looking for a late lunch spot around where we were. My husband had the Tandoor Special and I the chicken special. It was so good thing we were both very hungry as it was a generous amount of food. The food was fine ( we have a very good place where we live that would be hard to beat). We were unsure of how they classified their spiciness so we went safe and I ordered mild and my husband did medium- we both would up it a level higher. Great spot right across from one of the theaters and they offer a nice pre-theater meal.
The lamb was so over cooked that I couldn’t chew it and send it back. About 1.5 hours I suffered through sever gastric distress
We ate early, between the first and second Harry Potter plays. The food was great, the service fast at 4:30, and it was exactly what I was looking for. I highly recommend the Lamb Vindaloo!
Last minute meal after a few drinks.
Nice food and friendly staff.
If the food is the most important aspect of any restaurant experience then in his category we had no complaints - traditional Indian fare, prepared well enough. However, the remainder of the evening left a lot to be desired. The table we squeezed into next to the bathrooms reminded us of sitting in the Cabinet War Room - no windows, concrete walls, similar paint color. The poor English speaking ability of the entire staff made it difficult to communicate. We did a lot of pointing to the menu and guessing at what was being asked. The most irregular part of the entire evening was the failure of their credit card system which necessitated one of us leaving the table at the end of the meal to go to a nearby ATM for cash to pay the bill. Our server was apologetic about the issue and they provided a free starter to compensate us. Overall, Maharaja was a decent place for Indian cuisine if one expects no more.
I visit Maharaja of India often. As with my other visits, this was a great experience. The food was absolutely delicious, and service was great!
I shared a great dinner here with my colleagues. I’ll most definitely eat here again.
We chose this place because we were here a few years ago and had a good meal. It was just as good this time. It's in a great location, just next door to the National Portrait Gallery. I would come back if I am in the neighbourhood and am hungry for spicy Indian food.
Atrocious ,no courteous service very ordinary food
To be avoided at all costs
When we arrived I told the waiter we had a reservation, he clearly couldn't speak very good English as he sat us by the door which which was windy and tiny, telling us we cannot sit at the back of the restaurant without a reservation. We asked to move and he angrily said "I told you so!".
We ordered our food and got our drinks and papadums, the can's of coke we received were off and tasted awful. A few short minutes after receiving our papadoms our main meal was dropped on the table and the staff rushed off. Never experienced that before...
We both ordered chicken korma and the meat was awfully dry and tasteless. After several times of asking for a slice of lemon, several arrived, one was already used.
Overall terrible experience, awful attitude of the staff, rude and unkind. The food was unpleasant and overpriced. Would absolutely not recommend.
Arrived late for our booked greeted warmly by staff. Very courteous and helpful quick service. Food was delicious.
Nothing to complain about regarding Food. The waiters didn't smile, but did their job fine.
My bill was over £200 and it was not until the bill arrived I was informed the credit/debit card machine was not working, not great
Good food, thats what a restaurant is about mainly and the MOI serves good food, although we received something different then ordered ..., the food was great.
The restaurant itself is not so good: it is for small people that do not mind everybody bumping into your table and chair. For seating its terrible, for eating its great.
Would only recommend the MOI to another person that only cares about the food.
The food itself wasn't too bad although meat felt dry. Unfortunately service was very poor. We had to ask for glasses and cutlery. Therewere 4 of us but for some reason waiter saw only 3 ppl at our table and we constatly had to ask for extra glass or spare plate. Found it very ignorant. My foot will never ever step into this place again!!!!!
Food has an authentic North Indian flavour minus the heat from excess chili peppers. It was a pleasant surprise. Ambiance was good. People watching from the front window could not be beat. Staff were attentive.
Everything smothered in curry powder; felt the after effects for days!
Only 2 others in the restaurant at peak time! This should have set alarm bells ringing
Will not be going back
Starters were lovely, however mains came & one meal was completely wrong & one meal was cold, very apologetic & quickly had the meals prepared again, excellent quality once we got our meals again. Would recommend.
Dined here on Sat 27 Jul with two friends and had a great meal. We are dedicated curry eaters and so know when we are in a good place and given the central location we were astonished that it seemed so quiet for a Sat evening. Also very good value for money given its location. Would definitely eat here again and would highly recommend to curry fans.
