Three soaring levels mean plenty of space for intimate dinners, large parties and get-togethers. Every seat in the house has a unique perspective, but everyone is treated to dramatic views of the original exposed brick façade and perfectly-restored grand entrance.
Built at the turn of the century, the 14th Street location has been reborn as a bowling alley, automobile showroom, rehearsal space for Arena Stage, and most importantly, Club Bali where Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, and Cab Calloway made history.

Hostess coped very well with city-imposed customer spacing. Service was good and food tasty, as always. Felt it important to support local business before mandatory closing
Food was overpriced for quality. Waitress was unprofessional and rats were crawling on the ground outside
Party of 3. Initial interaction with server was excellent. However, no follow up. All 3 of us received our salads and they were good. Two of us received entrees and were almost finished with them when we flagged down another server to ask about the third entree. Also, did not receive one of our drinks until we asked for it. Initial server dropped by and explained the third entree was delivered to another table and had to be remade, but did not seem terribly concerned. No served ever checked back to confirm the third entree actually arrived. A different server brought our bill once we asked for it. I would recommend Matchbox to friends, but only after informing them to expect lower quality service. This is the second time I've had poor service there.
I am lactose intolerant and asked for a burger with no cheese. No only did it take about an hour to get our food, they got my order wrong and put cheese on my burger. When they brought it out 40 minutes later, it still had cheese on it. I was livid. Luckily they brought out another burger 20 minutes later that was right, and it tasted good.
Food was cold and long in coming. Server was attentive and nice, but the place appeared understaffed and unable to get food from kitchen to table in time. The pizza tasted good but was cold. Same experience for all 4 of us.
The food was great, but our server was barely around and we were routinely waiting to order more food or drinks.
Matchbox is one of my favorite places to go when in DC for a casual dinner. The atmosphere is lively and casual. The food quality is good with plenty of different options. The pizza's are great and there are lots of options for sharing.
Matchbox is one of my favorite restaurants, period. My only complaint has to do with the service. Beers generally take a long time to get to the table after they are ordered, and two people in my party of 9 did not get waters until well after they were seated.
The hostess and manager were gracious in re-seating the group to a different setting. And our server, "Toy" was phenomenal!
We had a very large group (larger than we originally anticipated) . The wait staff amazing!
They didn’t give us an attitude and were excellent in taking care of such a large group.
The food here is decent but the service was completely terrible. It was a solid hour between when we sat down and when our bar drinks came out. We had to flag down a waiter every time we needed anything. We were upcharged for larger portion sizes on two items without requesting it. They messed up our bill twice. It was just bad all around, and it was not that crowded.

During bottomless brunch it’s kind of expected the server is a little more attentive than a regular meal so you can continue ordering food and replenishing your drink. We had to sit around and wait with empty glasses and plates trying to flag down our server. We ended up not doing bottomless mimosas but got charged for two.
The food was very good and everyone we interacted with was very nice, but it took us five asks to get water delivered to the table, and there was a major delay in getting half of our table's food. Delays happen, but it definitely felt like our server forgot about us, as did the many people we asked for water (including a manager!).
I really enjoyed my bowl. It was the blackened chicken and baby kale bowl with a mango vinaigrette. It was really good!
Not first rodeo, have been to this location and others a few times. Was surprisingly quiet for a Sunday. But despite lack of crowds, service was pretty slow, wrong food was delivered multiple times and pizza, of all things, came extremely late. When food did arrive correctly, it was excellent. Great tapas brunch, with food being more impressive than drinks.
Please heat the place. It was so cold in there. Otherwise enjoy matchbox. My cheese pizza with bacon was fine
Food was very greasy and over cooked. Ordered chilaquiles and came out with no chorizo, no green sauce and a tablespoon of black beans. Ended up sending it back. Will not be back.

Overall OK. I ordered from the regular menu and liked my food. My wife ordered the brunchbox (unlimited small plates). When her food arrived, she immediately asked for an additional side of potatoes and we waited 40 minutes before they finally arrived. To their credit, they comp’d her meal. But I do t think this is the place for brunch in DC.
Valentine’s Day night, so it was busy but our server seemed as if it was his first week working. Took a half hour to receive water and take our drink order, took another half hour after that to receive our food only after I had spoke to the host. Unfortunately will probably not be back.
Our waitress was very nice, but not all that attentive.
We had not previously tried Matchbox, and though at first glance one might easily get the impression that it's another pizza place, it turns out to be quite a decent restaurant. We split a bowl of the the cream of crab soup, which was delicious, we each ordered one of the chicken entrees, both of which turned out to be quite tasty, and we shared one glass of the blueberry limeade, which was tasty and refreshing, and contained lots of real blueberries. The portions were generous without being overwhelming, so we were able to finish pretty much all we ordered, and that left us full enough that we chose to skip dessert. All in all, quite a nice dinner.
We were overcharged for happy hour drinks. Waitress first tried to explain it away, then returned with partially corrected bill. Adding insult to injury, the expensive mediocre full priced Manhattan was served without a cherry! Horrors!!!
Seriously the Margarita and Pepperoni pizzas were OK but not special.
We’ve had better food/drinks/service at this location in the past. Overall disappointing experience.
Salmon salad was good but not remarkable.
Server never came back to the table to ask if we wanted coffee and other beverage refills.
Great food, at a great location.
Food was nothing unique. Felt rushed by the server who also didn’t go out of his way to make me feel valued. I have no reason to go back to Matchbox bc it wasn’t a meaningful experience; I can spend my time & money elsewhere

Fist off there is no place to park so we were 30 minutes last for our reservations and they marked us off as a no show! Never an apology . Our waitress was terrible and the food was terrible. The pizza crust was like cardboard. I definitely do not recommend this location. It was a $100 for a disappointing dinner with our college kids. We were visiting for a nice birthday dinner...so disappointing

The server we had was outstanding! I wish I could remember his name but on his sleeve it said ‘legit trainer’. He took such great care of not only us but those around us too. Attentive to our food and drink needs but also made really good recommendations and flavor enhancements overall.
This was my first time to Matchbox since moving out of the DC area 18 months ago, and my experience at the restaurant was as good as I remember it being before! The food was excellent, the service was responsive, and everybody in my party was happy with their meal.
This is the perfect go to place for good food with a relaxed atmosphere. Great for business meetings because its not noisy at all.
It was a terrible experience. The hostess was on the phone, the booth was not clean, the waiter was not attentive at all, and the restaurant was out of several dishes.

Food was fine, but service, while pleasant, was disappointing. Main course came out before the appetizers (it’s wasn’t crowded at the time), and overall service was slow. There are better, more reliable, choices in the vicinity.

The service continues to go down at this location. Over 20 minutes to get a server at the table, 40 minutes wait for an appetizer, and had to request water refills.

I came here with my friends from out of town and expected much more. The unlimited brunch seemed like a great deal but the food and service did not meet any expectations.

Everything on this street was ridiculously overpriced. Matchbox was the only thing that had reasonably priced options. The food was pretty decent but nothing spectacular and it definitely was pricier than the quality of the food called for. But it was close enough to walk everywhere we wanted to go that night and it was the cheapest thing on the block so I’m not too upset about the price especially considering it was a nice place and the service was awesome. The specialty cocktails were more than worth it too. I’d recommend it for a nice dinner if you’re going out in the area and want some nice drinks and nice atmosphere and don’t care about overpaying a bit on okay food.
We've been to this location a couple of times and this was by far the worst experience. Server was terrible and our food arrived late and then the order was all wrong
