Matchbox - Capitol Hill
Located on the bustling 8th Street corridor of Barracks Row, our second location in Washington, D.C. was built out of love for the revered Capitol Hill neighborhood.
New at matchbox: brunchbox, our new unlimited brunch with small plates and drinks. Think: an endless selection of dishes like our avocado toast, breakfast nachos, chicken + grits and, of course, any of our small pizzas
Our lofty mezzanine mezzanine accommodates 44 guests seated, or 30 guests standing, so there’s plenty of space for intimate dinners, private parties and get-togethers.

Great Apple & Pear Salad
Good food. Slow service took 20 minutes to get our first drinks and watwr. We were a little mislead about the brunch drink specials.
Brunch is an excellent value and the menu items
Staff here are always friendly. Food is consistently good - my favorites are Shrimp and Grits or Meat Lover's Pizza.
We eat at Matchbox on CapitoL Hill 3-5 times a year. Last night, I was disappointed. I ordered a steak salad with pear, bleh cheese & lettuces. The menu simply said steak as an option. The steak arrived breaded in pepper & inedible. I had to send it back & order another dish. Our friend asked for bread. They brought one piece grilled. There were 4 of us. Seemed disappointing. Please share with restaurant.
The manager greated us. Great demeanor. Hostess followed up and seated us. Both were friendly and communicated well. Chyna was our server. She continued with the same pleasant, welcoming customer service from the moment she came over to our table until we finished our meal. Food was good. Cocktails as well. Clean, relatively quiet establishment. Recommend, and will patronize again.
The pizza was pretty bad!! Will not be back
We did not stay to dine. We were seated practically in the kitchen, not waited on, and ignored. After 15 minutes, we walked out and found a wonderful restaurant down the street called Trattoria Alberto. That one we will recommend. Never will we recommend Matchbox.
Was not very busy but service was just plain slow and disinterested. Despite every big booth being empty, we were taken an upstairs table. The calamari app was one of the smallest portions I have ever been served. The pizza quality has gone down - can't say why/how but it was just bland and uninteresting - we had 3 different types - all blah. Did not have ingredients for two of the signature cocktails. Have never felt I didn't get my money's worth at Matchbox - today I wished I had gone elsewhere.
The staff was really nice. We had reservations and was seated five minutes early. We sat at the table for more than twenty minutes before our waitress came. When our meals were brought out, they were cold and the food was average.
Second time visiting this location and a bit disappointed. Food was subpar compared to last visit. Presentation was not the best for both dishes, sloppy to be exact (we ordered fried calamari and crab cakes). There also was a bit of confusion in seating us. Could’ve been an off night but was not impressed.
Just got back home from hosting a brunch for mom’s 70th birthday. As soon as I arrived I let the host know that I needed an additional 3 places for my kids who weren’t originally on the guest list. They quickly accommodated me and had really great attitudes about it too! So that was great! My party was supposed to start at 1030 but everyone got there early and they were ready to seat us, which was another plus! The brunch menu is great and for $31 all you can eat, we really felt it was a great bargain. The food was outstanding. The biscuits and gravy needed salt and pepper but everything else was great! I had biscuits and gravy, shrimp and grits, the lemon pound cake french toast and a cocktail (forgot which one). The Everything was outstanding! Now, the service was a bit slow, which was unexpected because the brunch is tapas style so it shouldn’t have been an issue keeping up. Perhaps we needed more than one waitress. Anyway, the service was slow and the. It picked up outta nowhere the end. I didn’t use the bathroom, but my aunt said they weren’t in good shape. She said the bathrooms looked like they belonged in an older building. So I’m guessing the chic of restaurant didn’t continue into the bathroom. These are the only two reasons this experience is getting 4 stars. Nevertheless, I will absolutely, 1000% be back. There was a kids party upstairs and the place was packed so that could have contributed to the slower service and the because the place is so new, they may have opened with the full intent to redo the bathrooms soon. Either way, like I said, I’ll be back and I’ll recommend all my friends to go as well!
Hate the new unlimited brunch menu. Please just bring back regular a la carte brunch!
It took a while to receive our beverages.
They were out of black bean burger.
Shrimp & grits only at dinner, even though it was on the lunch menu????
The food was not good. Onion straws were underdone. Sliders were not well done as requested.
I have been to several different Matchbox locations many different times and this was, by a pretty large margin, my worst experience at a Matchbox ever. The service was spotty at best. The place was not very busy, so there wasn't really a reason for the mediocre service. Our food was just okay. For example, we ordered the sliders appetizer and they were all way overcooked (to the point of almost charred). And the kicker was that halfway through our meal, the whole restaurant started filling with wood smoke, clearly coming from the kitchen. They didn't come to our table to acknowledge or apologize for it. No discount offered, no dessert sent over. Nothing. Like assuming we just wouldn't notice that our eyes were burning and we couldn't breathe easily.
I don't think I'll be back to this location and I'll think twice before going to another Matchbox location after that experience.
As much as I love Matchbox and have loved them over the years, they have changed. Much of the menu items that I enjoyed from the drinks, appetizers and food have all been changed. Some items like their signature drink Southern Charmer (that I'd gotten at least 2+yrs in a row was no longer on the menu). Up side is the bar still made the drink but it wasn't the same as it once was. The pizza was also another change and even them attempting to redo it made the pizza seem like it lacked it's old flavor and fullness. I left feeling like my old friend had changed and not all in good ways. I'm all for change, but I think some of the rapid changes have been a bit much to keep up with; even my waitress felt the same. I'll see if I can rock with all this newness and order something else but I can't say the next time I'm hungry and pizza comes up that I will immediately want Matchbox. After a while too many changes begin to make me feel like maybe I've outgrown them...
It took a long time to be served
I had to get up to ask the host if it was a carryout since we were sat on high chairs by the bar and kitchen area, on the way to the bathrooms
Great food, great service.
Lunch with a friend on MLK Jr. Holiday. I did not know it was brunch so it was crowded.
I attended matchbox with my family to celebrate restaurant week and celebrate a birthday. Upon arrival we asked for the restaurant week menu and were informed that they had stopped doing restaurant week early. Overall, disappointed by the lack of communication before we went for restaurant week.
Matchbox is one of my reliable favs. My experience is always consistently tasty.
This location has declined . Cold food and slow service .
Dropped in for lunch. Matchbox never disappoints.
Even though we requested a table which didn't currently have a server assigned to it we didn't have to wait long in order to be attended to by an outstanding waitress. Great overall.
Nice enough for brunch. Pizzas are very good.
best pizza, good comfort food in general and the absolutely best burger ("Bistro Burger" in the region
This is the second time in the past month that we have been to this Matchbox and had a bad experience. The service is mostly absent. We had to keep asking other servers, the host, the bus boy to find our server. The staff seem to group at the reception desk talking rather than paying attention to customers. The quality of the food at this site has also declined. Our orders have taken inordinately long to get to the table. As a last straw, the restaurant didn't register with OpenTable that we had been there and OpenTable contacted us to find out why. Although we like Matchbox, we won't be back to this particular site.
We eat at Matchbox quite often. This evening there was a noisy party on the balcony which brought up the noise level. Food was great, service good and prices are decent.
Service was off but it was the day after new years and our server may have been overloaded.
We usually have a pretty good experience here. Today we came here for brunch but the menu has been changed again so we decided to order in on the regular menu ... the service is terrible our food was terrible and then after our food was incorrectly made several times and the manager took care of it, on the way out the waitress was talking about us and the other guest to the host in the front of the restaurant which is the most unprofessional thing I’ve ever experienced. She was telling the other host that it was not true that the other guest were waiting for 15 mins without service (which they were, and left because of it). The customers had no drinks and had not even been greeted by a server. When I corrected her and let her know I can hear her, she got very rude and we decided to leave because it was no longer desired place to be.
It took 42 minutes to get the drink I ordered, and 30 minutes after ordering food, I was told they didn't have what I ordered.
Great food and excellent waiter! My son had the mini burgers, daughter had a margarita pizza, and my husband and I split the apple and pear salad and a small fig and garlic pizza, all of which was tasty!
We went for our holiday lunch with our coworkers--food was good but the service was very slow.
30$ Unlimited brunch. Solid value. Attentive and relaxed service
