Service was poor - had to ask for the bill three times. They didn’t top up our water etc.
Had to chase for service.
I called the night before to confirm there will be breakfast served at the restaurant. I was confirmed it will be and that the menu is on the website. I checked the website to see an extensive menu. We showed up next day and they had a very short menu of three items only.
There was one waitress serving us who didn't seem very excited to be there and her service and attitude was sub-par.
The food was amazing as was the service and the place has a nice modern feel to it! The portions are not particularly big but very delicious
A bit disappointed compared to my visits in the past.
Food for all was only mediocre and service was slow, not consistent, and difficult to get attention and the restaurant wasn’t even that busy.
Good value for money but they offered wines that they were out of stock on and forgot to deliver additional dishes we ordered
Food itself was excellent
This was my 2nd Dinner here in less than a month. Slightly frustrating this time; patchy service, absolutely awful greeting when the chap with the dodgy ponytail made plain how terribly busy and stressed he was. The food was, again, excellent. Table service started well, but we were then handed over to a different server who started badly and later made up for it with super friendly and attentive service.
It’s a nice room with generously spaced tables (apart from a couple of corners). Relaxed vibe with excellent food albeit below the very best London can offer.
Haven't been here for over a year and a half, used to be very good. We ordered food around 7.30 and weren't served until close to 8.30 by which time we had finished our wine and were left waiting looking around for a waiter. No explanation or apology for the long delay, was quite disappointed in the experience.
Really good food in a relaxed and friendly environment. Nothing laid back about this place - there is an unquestionable buzz - but the focus seems to be on keeping it simple. Everything from food to ambience is sophisticated but never overthought or overdone. Recommended
Great for a date
Great food and setting. The space is quite large so I think if it had been full it would have been quite noisy. Great booths that could be cosy for dates or friends. Food was outstanding. Would definitely go back.
What an absolute gem!
Merchants Tavern is a beautiful romantic restaurant with fanstastic food, good wine and excellent service. I couldn't recommend it enough and will definitely be returning.
Strangely disappointed with the food as we had very high expectations. Both main of cuttlefish and starter of ragu were too sweet! and other half wasn’t blown away by his either. It’s a real shame as the restaurant itself and service are exceptional.
I went there with my girlfriend for our 1 year together anniversary. We booked for 6 o'clock. It was very quiet to begin with very nice ; cozy atmosphere, comfortable but also nice enough to dress up and we had a wonderful experience from there.
Our meal was a delight. We ordered 3 courses. Their starters are really tasy. Then we had their Côte de bœuf for 2, fries & bearnaise sauce. It's pricy but it was so worth it. The meat is delicious, well cooked, tender and tasty. the bearnaise is home made and they serve it with a salad that is simple but well seasoned. Just incredible.
The desert choice is not very diverse and the menu does not correspond to the website one, but that's the only minor things I can think of in terms of criticism.
Their strength is their staff. Our waitress was perfect, chatty but not too much, really nice and helpful, and did not leave us to wait for hours when we need her. The rest of the staff is polite, welcoming and does everything to make you feel at home. I definitely recommend it and we will definitely come back next year !!
Great as usual.
Unbeatable fried oysters!!!!
Probably one of the best restaurants in Shoreditch
Great food and served by a friendly and efficient waitress
Amazing food and ambience. The service was excellent and staff really knowledgeable about all aspects of the menu. I would definitely recommend for any occasion. We will be going back for sure. All round great experience.
Lovely atmosphere! Such a great restaurant, great food and interesting mix of flavours
Visited Merchants Tavern on a Sunday night after 8pm . They were happy to take an amendment to my booking and confirmed our visit to them the night before.
The menu on the Sunday was limited to the Sunday All Day Lunch menu £30 a head with £5 surcharge for beef.
The food ambiance and service was good and had a reasonable wine list with lots of choice. However be careful as some of the pricing is for a carafe (50cl) not a bottle (75cl) and we were caught out, paying more than we had expected, as we thought that was the bottle prices.
Restaurant very dark like an American Steakhouse with subtle lighting.
Overall enjoyed the meal and service, but thought it was a little bit pricey for the meals we had.
The service was great - delicious food - recommend ordering starters as well and a cocktail for dessert worked very nicely - thanks all!
Awesome! Good food and experience
Really great food and service. Good atmosphere. Reasonably quiet though. which is great if you tire of all the noisy and chaotic restaurants of Shoreditch where you can’t hear your friends talking!
A great restaurant and pub with amazing food, good wine list and atmosphere. The service was excellent. Definitely worth a visit.
My go to place in Shoreditch! Been multiple times and I’ll definitely going back again. Food is always amazing with a great wine list. Service is always punctual with the servers always happy to recommend a good wine to pair with your meal. Their espresso martinis are some of the best in London. Great place for a date or even a nice catch up with friends.
The service was quick and efficient and the four different meals were excellent. Would definitely revisit.
We went on Friday night at 8.30 the restaurant was busy so we waited a while to be served and another hour and half before our food arrived. The food was good but it took too long for our food to arrive, we kinda lost my appetite. Shame!
Terrible service, food arrived cold and no vibe,
We were meeting for a catch up and to celebrate a birthday. The Waitress was exceptionally helpful, answering questions about portion size, arranging for a doggy bag, providing knowledgeable information about wine choice.
Superb service and food
A lovely evening
Wonderful attentive friendly service
Great food, choices for any taste
Booked Merchant's Tavern for our wedding anniversary. The staff could not have been nicer and more celebratory. We were shown to our table and told that the Chef had prepared a starter for us (on the house!) We had a glass of wine and an extraordinary good starter (thanks Chef!) We ordered our mains, I had the chicken, gravy and mash, delicious, my husband found his main a bit bland. More wine and we were ready to leave, but not before we got some warm Madeleines (gratis ) with 'Happy Anniversary' complete with love heart written in hazelnut chocolate sauce. I mean, come on! How amazing was that and what an experience. I have to say the only down side to this whole extravaganza was that the service was a bit slow and I think possibly understaffed. This would not have been an issue at all if we hadn't planned a bunch of stuff and were meeting people later for drinks and dinner. We needed a faster turn around but I'm pretty sure if we had mentioned that from the start our requirements would have been met. Thank you so much Merchant's Tavern for going above and beyond and for being so darn sweet! Will go again for a long lazy lunch!
As always have a great time and fantastic food at the Merchant’s Tavern. It’s a cool place with an exquisite meal experience.
Roast lunch disappointing
They do an excellent job, food is to a high standard, service friendly and efficient and kitchen pushing out European classics, well worth a trip if your in the area.
Great atmosphere on a Friday night and food was delicious. Fun place to go for a date.
Couldn't fault the Sunday lunch & was great value. I will be back!
Everything was really nice nothing else to add
Fourth time at Merchants Tavern and never disappointed! Food was delicious as usual, staff incredibly lovely, ambience always chilled and sophisticated. Great evening!
I really like this place and am a repeat diner.
Consistently great quality seasonal dishes, perfectly cooked in an open kitchen by expert chefs. The ambience is cozy with leather banquettes and tables not too close together, so ideal for a date night or small groups of friends. There is a more casual bar area to the front with DJ later on some evenings for entertainment. Great for hanging out and chilling.
Decent cocktails and carafe option for wines, rather than a whole bottle.
Great for tasting menu events with guest chefs too! Angela Hartnett never disappoints.
