Michael's - Santa Monica
Had the pastA with lobster. Pasta was so overcooked it was mush. Only ate a fraction of it. Mentioned this to the server and barely an acknowledgement. Still paid $36 for this dish. Very disappointing as I’ve eaten here many times over the years and have enjoyed it but this experience has soured me on Michaels.
Fine new menu. Two of us shared Coleman's salad, bouillabaisse, and a pasta special with cavier. Each was perfectly prepared and had taste surprize/delight. Service as always was warm and efficient.
It's not what it used to be! Won't be back. Didn't have a cocktail item(everybody has Tanqueray). No cappuccino, lattes or expresso("machine is broken"-get it fixed.)
Michael’s has a lush back patio with romantic lighting in the evenings. We were there on a Saturday night and enjoyed a 2.5 hour dinner with wonderful wine suggestions by waitress. The food was very good and overall experience was wonderful. This is definitely a local spot where friends like to get together or save for a nice date night.
Amazing! Noel is the best! Amazing recommendations and the sweetest.
And thing is guaranteed when booking a table at Michael's: a fantastic meal. Always the freshest ingredients, intensely flavorful, beautifully prepared and graciously presented in the most bucolic garden setting.
The food was cold - our dinner took over 3 hours to finish we had 2 small and 2 medium dishes ! ! They had no desert! They told us we had no desert ! It was an awful experience for the price
food should be better, including presentation. Fell a little below expectations. and a very very long wait for our main courses. Not acceptable.
Food was a tiny bit undercooked and the flavors didn’t quite gel
Subsequent to the meal the hostess came up to us and apologized because the kitchen was experiencing a power outage and so they were working using candle light and other forms to prepare the food
we would’ve preferred hearing that in the beginning
Perhaps we would’ve ordered different foods under those circumstances
Special place for dinner, got very high quality food, cooked just to perfection. Service could have been at but more attentive but the atmosphere of a lukewarm late summer night and the fantastic food made up for it. Wine selection is excellent but pricey.
Anyway would definitely return for a next time.
Still the most beautiful place in town and with a new chef touching all chords, Michael's is a new old favorite. Can't wait to go back!
Having never been to Michael's, I was a bit nervous making a reservation for an important date. All worries were dashed by meeting our skilled waitress - helpful but not hovering. The food was exceptional! Oysters on the half shell and a fresh salad with a mustard seed vinaigrette started our meal and only got better from there. We met Michael as he gracefully treated us all as friends who stopped by for a bite. Perfect experience!
Amazing meal! I will be back to try more menu items and the happy hour.
It has been a long time since I visited Michael's. Sitting on the patio is still a must. I am not certain when they revamped their menu, but I was a little apprehensive when I made my reservation. I was not disappointed. The food was fabulous. The services was impeccable. And the wine selection fantastic. The waiter actually picked all three of our courses as well as the wine and I could not have been happier. Will be returning soon.
Where do I start? Drink orders were handled efficiently, but from that point on it was down hill. As you say state on the menu dishes are meant to share. Given the size of portions it is.almost impossible . Two orders of soft shell crabs were the size of spiders , basically not enough fir even one diner. Salmon was served cold and tough.sent back to get a hot order and brought back after others had already finished. And still tough. Olives order had to be asked fir 2 times before they finally brought them not as appetizers but during the main course. . After apologizing my drink was refilled and dessert of cookies and custard was served on the house. Very disappointed in the caliber of Michaels now.
Decided to give this old classic a try again. I loved it in it's heyday. Zagat gives it a good review, our food was good, not outstanding. The service was very disappointing. The ambiance is still terrific on a summer evening!
One of our favorite dining spots. The best ambiance in the city!
Fantastic food and great service. Wonderful place for dinner
Lovely garden chic ambience with throwback, laid back decor. Food was equally delightful. Don’t miss the cornmeal pancake and the duck egg breakfast sandwich!
Loved the seedy sourdough, salad, duck confit! Great service in a beautiful setting.
Limited menu was the biggest issue. Quite expensive for what you got too. Beautiful setting though with garden and water works. I think it must have been much nicer before and has seen better days with regard to the menu.
Great food and ambience!!
Very tasty, epicurean food in a garden patio atmosphere. I really liked that it was a quiet restaurant. You didn’t have to yell to talk.
We sat outside in the garden and it was lovely. Service was very attentive. I had the Branzino. My husband had the steak. We shared a large salad and a small desert. Everything was delicious!
Very disappointed in the food .
Food quality and presentation is terrible.
This use to be one of the best restaurants in the city. No any more! The menu is extremely limited, and the food was horrible. And if that wasn’t bad enough, the service was atrocious, slow and incompetent. It was truly one of the worst dining experiences I have ever had.
Great food, ambiance. All around wonderful. The art is great.
Excellent and special experience. Great restaurant and I can't wait to go back.
Everything was wonderful and the food was delicious!!
I went when Michael’s first opened, and have gone through the years. Their standards remain the highest. It was great!
We've been going to Michael's for perhaps 40 years, since it opened. But haven't gone recently because they featured "small plates", which we found we didn't like. Knowing that their chef recently changed, we looked up their new menu and were pleased that it seemed to be much simpler, shorter, and appeared to echo earlier days.
Great! Tuesday was my wife's birthday so we thought we'd celebrate at Michael's with some old friends. Major error. It felt like a "Black Diamond" downhill run from the start. The first thing our waiter told us was that all dishes except the main courses were for sharing, small plates. Oh-oh.
I ordered a Bloody Mary, which I'm very fond of. After three sips it clearly was far too spicy -- never before have I had one so intense. I asked the waiter to dilute the drink with a little tomato juice. "Sorry, the base is premixed -- can't do that." OK.
The Black Diamond run continued. What I thought would be a paté turned out to be a near liquid chicken liver schmeer, with a substantial pool of jam sharing the plate. OK. The run continued. My pasta was much too...spicy. My wife's duck was much too...spicy. Our friends salmon wasn't too...spicy, just overcooked. Virtually everything was seasoned the same way, too intensely.
Finally, although only four or five tables were occupied, the timing between courses was surprisingly long.
The real question here is "Who's minding the store? A real disappointment.
We were celebrating our anniversary and hadn't been to Michael's in many years. The entire evening from start to finish was delightful, delicious and everything you'd expect from a restaurant with Michael's history and reputation. We felt both celebrated and 'at home' by the superb and caring staff. The patio ambience is calm and inviting, just the right balance of simple elegance and romance. We found a terrific Sancerre (and a stimulating conversation with the sommelier) to go with the sea bass and veggies. I look forward to returning to Michael's.
Everything we had was wonderful - broccolini, pasta with bacon, pork chop and hangar steak - all set up to share - plenty for the three of us.
Desserts were amazing as well!
Brought friend from out of town for brunch
Blueberry pancakes were the best I’ve had in long time . Beautiful garden and great service.
Went for Fathers Day brunch with low expectations. Was I wrong! Place was packed until 2:30, service was superb and food great. Adventuresome, excellent wine list. Nice to see Michael's still has game after all these years.
We hadn't been to Michael's in a long time and were amazed that it was better than ever. We loved everything we ordered, and tried a lot because there were six of us sharing everything. We couldn't decide what was our favorite, but the Hen of the Woods, the pasta we ordered, and the orata were among the standouts. Michael and Chas are great hosts and made us feel at home. The restaurant is gorgeous and the art collection is exceptional. We will be back soon.
Father’s Day date with my husband.
This restaurant has been there for 40 years, I remember when it opened and I could not afford it. Staying open and relevant is an amazing feat in itself in a place where restaurants open and close every day. We went there for brunch which was excellent. Our party tried the shrimp and grits, the steak and eggs, the omelette, the breakfast sandwich, bread with an assortment of jams and a side salad. All dishes were expertly prepared and tasty. They arrived at the same time which is not often the case these days. The jams were homemade with unusual flavors such as raspberry habanero. A Bloody Mary was well spiked with fresh horseradish. We were warmly greeted by Michael himself who made it a point to greet all the guests. Sitting outside on a grayish morning on the patio was lovely and quiet. I can no longer go to restaurants where the decibel level is around 100, so a place like Michael’s is such a relief. I’ll be back soon to check out dinner and Happy Hour. Congratulations on the accomplishments of this restaurant and all the chefs that started out there. Please keep going.
The food is ALWAYS par excellence, the service is to emulate, the ambiance to admire, and there is no one like Michael himself. Also, enjoy the gallery exhibit
Love the place, especially the patio when the weather is nice. The food is fine, the service is pleasant, the atmosphere is great, it's just nice to spend a nice evening in the fresh air of Santa Monica with the never aging owner of this place. Love it, even if the olives in my martini were just floating instead on a stick...
