Great place to drink with friends!
We love coming here when we are in town. Late night eats when you are craving yakitori. The ambience is nice, it’s traditional remove your shoes and sit in individual glass rooms. Music is cool. Great place to come to as a couple or with friends. Suggest to make reservations, as this place seems to be packed ,majority of the time. No Ionger having exotic meat night, I personally haven’t tried it but my son has. Staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. Would recommend to anyone who loves yakitori.
A very delicious and pleasant Covid safe dining experience!
Good food, great drinks, amazing service. Will be coming back!
Convenient location, excellent food, wonderful friendly service!
I have has the pleasure of dining at Mokutanya Yakitori Charcoal in the past, prior to the COVID pandemic. I had always enjoyed eating here. When I had heard the restaurant had outside dining, I made a reservation. The tables (Very Limited) 6 feet from one another and the staff wore masks.... problem, there was a group ( 7-8 people) sitting/standing around their table having a party - eating and drinking and drinking and drinking alcohol. This group should have not been seated as a large group and should have been cut off from alcoholic beverages. While I was eating, the people seated at the adjacent table would bump into my seat while taking selfies. The noise level was so loud I was going to leave just as our food arrived at our table. So we stayed to finish our meal. We had not complained but the waitress apologized for the noise, therefore, the restaurant staff knew there was a problem with some of their guests but failed to do anything about it. The staff did not enforce this party/group to wear masks while not actively eatting and drinking. This group was allowed to stand around yelling / talking while taking selfies. This made me uncomfortable. Such an aweful experience. The food is good but not so good/great that I would return in the near future. The person I was dining with indicated, this is a place she will not return to dine. I had Ramen with added Wagyu beef slices but could hardly see any beef. It was just ok... My dining partner had the croquettes, yakitori, just ok, overpriced for the quality and quantity. The fried chicken (Karaage) was very nice.
Went on a Saturday night. Everything we had was amazing. Food was amazing and so was the service. Our host, walked us through the menu and was so descriptive about drinks to complement our meal. Her recommendations were spot on. Everything we ordered was outstanding. There wasn't one thing we didn't like.
I do wish there were more space heaters since its super cold out, because it was freezing out. But the waitress made it a point to keep our tea fresh and hot! Something that may be helpful to add to improve outdoor seating besides heaters, post signs that asked people to not smoke near the tables.
Service was awesome. They did a great job considering everything had to be outdoor. Thanks for the good food!
Amazing Food..... bring a jacket it's a bit chilly but worth it.
Been here 3x and all have been good. Their yakitori is great and love the grilled onigiri rice balls. Ramen also tastes great. Chicken kaarage is extra crispy compared to others I’ve had. Prepare to spend if you try a lot of things and order alcohol. Great with friends or groups of 4 or more to try a lot of things. Their indoor booths are enclosed in glass and private. Their sake and beer selection is outstanding.
We sat outside on a cold day. No heaters, the tarpaulin overhead dripping. Slanted plastic picnic tables, plates and glasses sliding off constantly.
Service was adequate, prompt.
Food was pathetic. Almost every dish lacked salt. Wagyu was chewy. Gindara was flavorless. Edamame was soggy. Wasabi was the standard horse radish with green powder that you get at low end sushi places.
Alcohol selection was limited, compared to other Izakaya places.
This cannot be a Japanese restaurant. More likely something masquerading as one. Definitely not worth the prices they charge, but I would skip even if it were free.
Great time! And it’s a restaurant that is perfectly set up for social distance dining because all of the eating areas are self contained with glass walls surrounding them. The food is delicious - but save room for their decadent desserts!
I always like mokutanya for its ambience, and it offers good outdoor dinning area compared with many other restaurants over in San Mateo downtown.
great covid precautions. only thing was it was cold due to door being opened to the precautions
Everything was exceptional except for the outdoor seating. There should have been some heating lambs. That would have made me feel a lot better.
Food and service was great. Music played was bit too loud.
We used to go here every couple weeks or so pre shelter in place. They opened a new outdoor seating area which was great. But some of the tables are a little too close for me. Ramen still great as always. But my family’s most favorite, the wagyu skewers were not like they used to be! Pretty dry and tough, which sucks because we ordered 7 of them! (used to be our fave remember!). At close to $6 each, big disappointment compared to when they used to be juicy and tender. Anyways, would still go back for to go, just without the wagyu!
Food was really bad, quality was so bad and portion was very small for what they charge people. Ramen soup was not make with pork bones; they poured MSG and salt instead of spending time to make the soup base.
Went in with high hopes but was very disappointed. I agree with other reviews I've read that said this restaurant is just better suited for in-room dining (unfortunately). You sacrifice quite a bit of the experience when you're seated outside and you can hear the train and traffic blaring.
Overall, subpar skewers, high prices, inconsistent service (they forgot one of our dishes and we had to really wave to get their attention throughout the experience), and not a restaurant I would recommend.
It's outside dining for now but it was cool. I think the skewers need some dipping sauces.
Terrible environment for outdoor dining
My partner and I had a great dinner at Mokutanya Yakitori. All of the food was yummy and we ordered a yummy desert.
This is a fun place to go with a group. It's nice to have your own group space (each section is enclosed within glass walls) and the decor is different from the usual restaurant scene. You do have to take off your shoes, so be aware of that.
The skewers are cooked over charcoal which adds a nice smokey flavor to the food. Our server was attentive and regularly checked in on us to make sure we were ok. As a bonus, this place is open late, so it's great if you have a late night craving.
Service was alil slow this time for some reason. They are usually on point on service
Everything was great, awesome food, service and ambiance, but long wait despite reservation!
Took the restaurant over an hour to realize they forgot our order, and then couldn’t find it. When it eventually did arrive, however, the food was delicious.
This used to be “our spot”. I’m not sure what changed but the service was so bad and the restaurant wasn’t even full. I can understand if the kitchen was busy because the restaurant was packed but that was not the case. We felt entirely neglected. Tables that came after us were served and left way before we even got all of our dishes. We loved loved loved this place but it pains me to say we will not coming back. I’m hoping this was a one-off case but it just was not the Mokutanya experience we remember from before.
Great food, nice decor/setting and some smooth jams to dine to, highly recommend and will go back.
Good overall experience, good food service and ambience.
Food was at best average. If you have ever had Yakitori at a reputable place in Tokyo, you will be seriously disappointed. I’m not sure how this pace got such high ratings
Great ambiance and the food is delicious. A very unique experience.
Fun place for dining with friends or work colleagues. It's best to go with folks who are willing to be a bit adventurous.
Great place for intimate dining.
Food and service was excellent.
They stay open until 2:00 AM
Good selection of grilled foods. Dollar oysters available on certain nights. Nice, dark, intimate place. Prices were on the higher end, but food quality was excellent.
Super intimate but cool vibes with the glass boxes around everyone. Unique, delicious, and not expensive date night.
The food was ok, but price was a little high for the taste. It was my boyfriend’s birthday and on my reservation, I stated this and wanted it to be special. I had to remind another waiter that we were there because it was a special occasion, our primary host/waiter had no clue.
I have dined here before and decided to try it again, but I will not be returning.
At the end of the night, our primary waiter/host placed the check on our table and said no rush, but she went and stood across from us and WATCHED us the entire time for a few minutes. She then walked away and came right back and asked if we were ready. Funny thing is, she did that twice. I finally got irritated and took the check and paid as we left at the front entrance.
I did not understand, you want me to pay right away and rushed me out yet, you did not accommodate my reservation and details. Unprofessional service.
This ruined our entire dinner, for the price they charge, it should be a white glove service yet it felt like a fast food service.
Not worth returning - waiters require additional training if they want customers to return!
Anniversary and Birthday!
My mom enjoyed an overdue birthday dinner. First time here for her.
Wonderful selection of skewers and other things on the menu are also worth a try! Overall, a great experience
