Very lovely food but very overpriced. My husband had a tiny steak and I had not even a full breast of chicken for our mains. We both had a starter and two drinks. That was £96!
My husband and I came out still very hungry!

Only go for very special treat.

This restaurant is well-placed for tourists and has prices to match. A small menu of standard modern Scottish fare. The food was well cooked but a little expensive for what it was. The side portions were small. The wine menu was uninspiring and overpriced.

We were very pleased by the total experience we had while having dinner there on our first night of our first trip to Scotland. Our RIb-eye steaks were juicy, easily cut, and done as we had requested. The service was very friendly, courteous, and fully professional. We would eat there again on our next trip to Scotland.

We had a fabulous dinner at Monteith’s, steaks cooked perfect to our order and we had excellent table service. Ambiance is romantic but bigger tables available for groups. Can’t recommend enough

Monteiths May seem low profile from The Royal Mile along which it is situated, but as one enters through a cleverly decorated close (narrow passage) a wonderful cocktail bar and cozy dining area appear! True mixologists behind the bar spoil guests with original cocktails—-probably the best in Scotland! The menu is concise but varied, with wonderful Scottish beef steaks as signature offerings. The wine list is impressive, as well! Freshly prepared cuisine requires time and affords diners an opportunity to enjoy a libation and conversation whilst the chef works the magic!

Absolutely perfect! My mum and I ate here on our last night visiting Edinburgh and it was exactly what we had been looking for. Everything from the ambience to the food, the service, the cocktails and decor were incredible.
Blink and you’d miss it from the street but worth finding.

We received a xmas voucher for monteiths & booked a table for 2 in advance. When we arrived a little early we were not shown to our table which surprised us as restaurant was quite quiet and we were asked if we wanted to Have a drink in bar area which we did however after our reserved time we had to ask staff if we could go to our table only to be told to choose which one we would like - staff could have done this as soon as we arrived. It would also have been nice touch if staff took our drinks to the table too.
We were disappointed not to see a specific 2 or 3 lunch menu - there were lunch specials however no lunch menu. We did not feel there was a great Choice on the a la carte menu and did feel that what we Had was overpriced And portions were notvery plentiful either. We have eaten at a few restaurants in Edinburgh and had a much better choice and better value for money eg the wedgewood restaurant in the royal mile which we would highly recommend. We asked for cheese board and coffee to Finish - coffee was served at same time as cheese board which we did it expect and there wasn’t even mints given with coffee. All
In all not a great experience and it’s a pity as we used the voucher for my husbands birthday.

Nice food, fab cocktails and ok service until one of my colleagues found a shard of glass in his cocktail. When we alerted the staff they took it away but didn’t return to the table with and apology, explanation or any attempt to resolve the situation. We left a nice meal feeling a bit like the staff didn’t really care or weren’t phased by what happened. Bizarre.

It has been sometime since we were art Monteiths. As remembered the service was excellent and you used to get a fresh bread basket that was delicious (what happened) . The Mussels were lovely as a starter but my husbands haggis starter was shameful, a finger sized portion of haggis & a slither of potato and charged £9. Main courses were not much better, small piece of fish (lukewarm) and pay extra for a portion of chips and my 1/2 lobster is the worst I have ever had. Rubbery is the only description. I managed to get the tail meat out eventually but really had trouble cutting or chewing it. There was no other meat on the lobster it was only shell.
Sorry, guys but you are really pricing yourselves out of the market especially if the food is not great and portions abysmal.

Starter portion of haggis was bit size, with a smear of potato and no neep! Both my partner and I chose Lamb main course, we selected potatoes to accompany it. Very dissapointed to receive a small bowl with 5 tiny wedges of potato to share between us! Preparation, flavour was very acceptable but not good value for money due to portion size! Bill including drinks (4) & gratuity was £130.00. My review is based on comparison with other eateries in the city centre of Edinburgh.

Had a lovely evening in Monteiths for my husbands birthday. Starters were very good, my husband had the scallops and I had the heritage tomato and burrata salad which we both enjoyed. The main courses were amazing, I had the lobster with garlic butter and my husband had the pork belly, both dishes were outstanding. Slightly disappointed when it came to the desserts, we both had cheese which was nothing special, I commented that we probably had nicer cheese in our fridge at home. The restaurant had a great atmosphere despite being a little chilly as we were seated near the door. Overall the food was really good and the staff very helpful and friendly.

A sad evening given my wife was very disappointed in the Fillet steak, asked to get cooked “well done” the steak came sliced in half horizontally and extremely dry and did not look appetising, the second attempt was done medium rare with blood in the juices on the plate, sadly after that we gave up, staff are good and ambience is good but just a disappointing evening for us...Suggest if you like your steak done well then go for something else...

I think it may be unfair to review a Royal Mile restaurant in Festival time - not that Monteith's is by any means your normal tartan and stag's head tourist trap (though both those adornments are present). However it used to be my all time favourite restaurant. The food quality always excellent, great wine list and other drink selections, service always first class and wonderful location. So why was I slightly less than overwhelmed on this occasion? Well, food still excellent, though maybe slightly more prissy than it used to be, definitely smaller portions and the menu more limited than I remember. We also felt hurried, it was extremely busy and noisy and I felt the pricing to be hugely increased from what it was previously. These last complaints may be a direct result of the pre-show hour on a Friday night at Festivaltime and to be fair we went again last night (Sunday) and it was much quieter, our meal more leisured and the service more relaxed. So maybe it is unfair to judge the place from that. I wonder too if the price hike is permanent. Anyway if you can afford it and either don't mind the freneticism or find a quieter time, it remains hard to beat in the old town.

Subterranean restaurant. Tales very crowded together. Service was good, and so was the food, but overpriced.
£110 for a three course meal for two with two glasses of wine and two coffees. Even for Edinburgh that seems a lot to me. It was of course close to the Edinburgh Tattoo, and the Fringe was in full swing. Perhaps that explains it

After a previous visit many years ago Monteiths has not lost any of its charm and appeal for a great location serving excellent food at great value for money. My wife, daughter and I were all impressed by the quality service (attentive, but not too much), fabulous food and menu selection, with a good selection of drinks as well. It's not a location for the claustrophobic, but it has great ambience and character. Will visit again on our next trip to Edinburgh!

We ordered two salads and two drinks. When the waitress came to see how our meal was we complained about the salads having minimal toppings and mainly leaves, which was disappointing. The waitress said she would go and speak to the chef and when she returned she said the chef said ‘that’s just how they are’. She did not offer us anything different or any extra toppings. The bill was £50 which for two salads and two drinks I think is a bit steep. We were not offered any kind of discount for being dissatisfied with our meals.
I think this restaurant probably survives by being on the royal mile and therefore attracting tourists.
