Food was cooked really well but the size was pretty poor for the price of the meal.
2 x starters and 2 x mains was 75 pound.
Not gonna lie I went for a kebab afterwards as I was still hungry
A few issues with our visit. Email sent on Monday, now Thursday and no response. Very dissatisfied.
Was closed when we got there got no message or anything
We had a lovely evening on Friday at Monteiths. From the minute we were welcomed to the minute we left absolutely everything was perfect. Food amazing, the right balance of service, great drinks choice and really lovely ambience. Will definitely return
A great way to experience Scottish fare with an updated palate. Service was friendly and responsive. Couldn’t have wanted anything more.
Lovely place, excellent food and service
Just love this restaurant great staff, atmosphere and best if all great food along with some pretty great cocktails.
Small place, and hard to maneuver (even for the staff), but it has a lot of character! Our server was a bit distracted by other tables while taking our order, so we had to repeat ourselves a few times, but I would go back.
We had the crab starter, and was disappointed with it, it was mostly potatoes, And very bland, as for the crab, there was hardly any. Very Unhappy, as the restaurant wasn’t cheap,
At first we thought we were in the wrong area. Yes, you are crowded and on top of each other. The restaurant is small, but we came to eat and the meal is worth the wait. Everything we ate was outstanding.
Glad we went early since they had fun out of fish by 5:40 pm.
Great venue with a good attention to the food, service and reasonable price for dinner on the royal mile.
A wonderful night on New Year’s Eve. The staff were fantastic and very accommodating. Thanks for a lovely evening and for making us feel welcome (we were a group of 14 and yet they were excellent).
We’d been to Monteiths once for lunch a few years back which was lovely and expected from the overpriced menu it would be comparable with the other fine dining priced restaurants in Edinburgh.
The venue is lovely, though busy it felt special and unique - what Edinburgh is good for! They were extremely busy. We ordered drinks which took 20 minutes to arrive. The waiter had no clue about the wine list or what to recommend. We ordered our mains - I ordered sides with my steak as did two other guests, while one was told that the duck he was ordering was a “wholesome meal” and he wouldn’t need sides. While we were waiting for the meal a waitress walked by and dropped a spoon covered in sauce down my husband’s Barbour jacket and when the manager was told about it he did clean it and hung it up elsewhere - we had to ask about it to find out it’s fate! I understand mistakes happen, but a little more communication as to how it looked/where it was would have been appreciated. The food then arrived some time later. It transpires the food is more for decoration than eating in Monteiths as our friend’s duck was not “wholesome” it was 2 small bits of duck with some kind of artistic smearing of sauce and popcorn. Thankfully we got some free chips he could eat later due to one of the other guest’s side not being written on the check and so not turning up. The (I can only assume) manager informed us that as potato gratin takes too long to make he’d send over some free chips. These took another 15 mins and had to be asked for twice. The food on the whole tasted lovely, though portions were small. It didn’t fit in with the haphazard service we received and fits in with the fine dining image that I think Monteiths wants to achieve. As a gesture of goodwill the manager took the sides off the bill for us - he was good, and tried to hold everything together on a busy night. A focus on service to match the fine dining style prices is very much needed. We wouldn’t recommend it.
We decided to have our anniversary dinner here and we had a really nice night. Food was great and the place had a really nice ambiance. We would happily recommend to others. Our only complaint is with the Maitre De who rushed us out the door after the food took a while to come out in an attempt to get ready for the next reservation. The other servers were nice and helped to give us a great anniversary.
Delicious food and cocktails and great atmosphere. Can’t wait to return
We visited on Saturday 21st December for Lunch, Staff were excellent, food was excellent and drinks were all excellent. I would highly recommend Monteiths.
We had a great time. It's in a great location and the place looks great. The food Is over priced for what you get. It isn't a steak restaurant but the steak is more expensive than some top steak restaurant. The food presentation wasnt great but it was tasty.
I would recomend this place due to location and decor.
Very nice service. We ordered 2 main dishes: baked cod and some dumplings. The cod was delicious! As a dessert, the chocolate and clementine tart was very good as well.
Dined on sat evening. Food was lovely, service was ok, and overall quite noisy and a bit on the cool side.
Lovely food and service, I just struggle to hear over the music
Excellent service all round. Attentive and polite with a personal touch.
Food is top notch and value for money.
Cozy atmosphere and perfect ambiance. Highly recommended.
We have eaten here a few times over the last few years and have always had a great experience. If anything the food was even better this time and it has always been very good. We discovered a new wine with the help of the staff and thoroughly enjoyed our visit.
Amazing experience, would definitely recommend to anyone. As a gluten free diner, there was no issue in making me feel as welcome as any other diner and everything I wanted was capable of being amended to suit, all meats cooked to perfection, service very attentive and priced very fairly
Nice ambiance but poor service. There seemed to be no front of house organising the waiting staff. Had to ask several times for drinks. Cocktails very small and not cheap
Great location, feels special. Very nice atmosphere.
Excellent food and very friendly service. Would definitely return.
Lovely place, great atmosphere, place was a bit cold, had to end up wearing our jackets. Main course was also rather cold. But besides it being slightly cold the food was lovely.
The place was lovely. The food excellent and the staff were first class, would definitely recommend and will be back
A great atmosphere, really good service and good food. Highly recommended.
We had an enjoyable time at Monteiths, however it involved having to turn a blind eye at a few things. It was heaving busy and very cramped in there. It is a nicely decorated place and we had a nice table but we just had to accept we were getting climbed over by guests and the waiter to get back and fourth. Food was good, tasty but perhaps the smallest piece of duck I’ve ever been served, half a duck breast at best! For £24 (without sides) this is pretty extortionate. Food tasted good but I can’t imagine I’d recommend it to friends given the value for money wasn’t there. I don’t mind paying for quality- but they must provide at least a substantial portion size.
very welcoming and a relaxed cosy atmosphere we loved it! A great drinks selection and for the food I recommend the venison you will not be disappointed.
Waiting for the food took about one hour. Maybe something went wrong (they could have told us). However, the food itself - I ordered duck - tasted very nice. The restaurant is a cocktail bar, I didn't realise before, so there was some loud music around.
It was my partners birthday so decided to have a meal at Monteiths. We have previously been in for drinks only. When we arrived it was very busy but a staff member attended to us straight away. We were shown a table to have a drink as we had arrived slightly early. We didn't have to wait long before we were taken to our table. From then on everything was spot on. A waiter came and took our drink order, we ordered a bottle of red wine. It was lovely, the waiter decanted the bottle into a carafe bottle too. Our food was very prompt and delicious. All the staff were attentive, always checking if everything was OK for us. I would definitely recommend the Venison and my partner enjoyed his fillet steak immensely. We will definitely be back and will have no hesitation in recommending Monteiths to friends and family.
It was a saturday night so was busy but servers were pleasant enough. Wasn't impressed with the food unfortunately. And tables are very cosy, beside each other.
Beautiful food and great cocktails in a fun and vibrant atmosphere.
Noisy place and music far too loud, staff were too busy entertain what looked like a drunken friend at the bar. A real disappointment food wise too which is a shame as I've spent many a nice time there drinking their lovely cocktails. Not sure I'll be hurrying back.
Overpriced food and long waiting time for food to arrive.
Enjoyable evening spent at Monteiths. Good cocktails, food, wine, nice atmosphere. However, the prices are high for what it is. We were visiting from London and even being used to London prices, we thought this costly for what was on offer - particularly given the small portions on the mains (the venison dish being particularly small, it looked more like a starter while the lobster dish attempted to hide the small size of the lobster in a huge stack of allumette fries).
Beautiful spot off the main Street tucked away. Everything was amazing from the food to the fresh cocktails. Service was brilliant and would return when back in Edinburgh.
Friendly staff and good service. Menu choice was too limited. Beetroot and Feta Cheese Starter was very disappointing as the beetroot was tasteless and there were far too many salad leaves and very little substance. Did not enjoy at all.
Main courses, while nicely presented, were just "okay" as leeks were tough. For the venison, I was not asked how I would like venison done and found mine a bit "under".
The "Chocolate Ganache" dessert was outstanding.
