Enjoyable evening spent at Monteiths. Good cocktails, food, wine, nice atmosphere. However, the prices are high for what it is. We were visiting from London and even being used to London prices, we thought this costly for what was on offer - particularly given the small portions on the mains (the venison dish being particularly small, it looked more like a starter while the lobster dish attempted to hide the small size of the lobster in a huge stack of allumette fries).
Beautiful spot off the main Street tucked away. Everything was amazing from the food to the fresh cocktails. Service was brilliant and would return when back in Edinburgh.
Friendly staff and good service. Menu choice was too limited. Beetroot and Feta Cheese Starter was very disappointing as the beetroot was tasteless and there were far too many salad leaves and very little substance. Did not enjoy at all.
Main courses, while nicely presented, were just "okay" as leeks were tough. For the venison, I was not asked how I would like venison done and found mine a bit "under".
The "Chocolate Ganache" dessert was outstanding.
We all had a great experience the food was great as were the staff. Just a couple of nip picks paper towels in the ladies room was empty and a couple of drinks were forgot, which were rectified as soon as he’d were brought to their attention. Very pleased.
Family outing for five. All so disappointed. Lobster is more like a large prawn. Steak tartare is 1/3 the size of Ivy’s for same price. Taste is middle of the road without any real highlights. Lovely waiter looking after us and the bulk of the restaurant... to little food on the plate, too little taste in the food, too few waiting staff and daft time to get food or being served. Other than that, mostly average.
Very friendly and helpful staff. Charming venue with amazing selection on wines /spirits and food.
Tables too close together, too crowded and very over priced.
Great food and cocktails, excellent service. More dessert choices would have been nice.
Lovely place but small and when busy you’re cramped in at your tables. Food is pricey. Even by london standards but it’s great. Service is very poor in relation to cost. It’s nowhere near the level you expect for the prices you pay.
We were a party of 6 and had to move our own table back just to vê able to get in to it. The staff watched abd didn’t help. It’s also very slow. Takes a while to get your drinks. It’s a lovely place and the food was great but I feel all things considered it should be closer to brasserie prices because that’s the kind of experience you’ll have.
From start to finish from the atmosphere to the food i cant fault it at all, although the table we git was very small but was rectified straight away to a bigger table, staff are amazing and very attentive will defanitely be back
Very expensive food disappointing and service sliw
Food was good but service was terrible. Never came back after delivering our food so we never got a refill on water and my boyfriend ordered a whiskey that she never brought over. Way over priced for good food but a serious lack of service
We used the itison deal for steak and chips plus glass of wine, coffee and fudge. Unfortunately the steak was lukewarm. It was tasty but not hot. We ordered bottle of white wine after enjoying the first glass included in deal. It was not chilled at all. Stuck into a cooler with a little ice at bottom in an attempt to chill but white wine should be chilled and ready to serve not warm and hope it chills as the diners eat! Disappointing as a basic to get right. I have another voucher to use but hope it’s better experience next time. They seemed a bit disorganised and we saw other people being apologised to so clearly an off night. Hope it’s a one off as we do like Monteiths.
The food and the venue were great.
The service was average the staff were unable to answer basic questions on the menu and the bar staff had a habit of smashing empty bottles in the bin! Not exactly what you'd expect at this price.
Good food. That’s key. But also professionel and friendly service. Porsions were however e bit small for me.
Excellent food, drink with a great choice. Worth a visit when in Edinburgh.
Loved it just as much as the first time we visited which was 7 years ago
Service was fantastic—friendly and fun but not obtrusive. Food and drinks were all delicious.
Everything was great. You just need to signpost the main door. Lots of people (including us!) came in by the lower door disturbing diners.
Great service, wonderful atmosphere, delicious food!
our third visit to this lovely place. We booked last minute and very late in the afternoon for lunch, We were the only diners and thought this might have an impact on the experience. It didn't. Staff fabulous as always and food was delicious.
Lovely meal. Only complaint was that the waitress brought an extra side dish that we didn’t order.
We expected a high level of service and quality but we're very disappointed as we let the server know before paying and leaving. Starters were great and arrived promptly. Main was slow to arrive and then was lukewarm at best on cold plates. The venison was beautifully cooked and a fine piece of meat but had been rolled in fresh coriander which I find abhorrent. Hungry after long wait so swapped meals. Cocktails did not deliver....London calling... expect rhubarb but just got lemon....rum and raisin...just got rum...left after two sips. Not the birthday celebration meal I had envisaged. Had better meals and service during Edinburgh stay for better value.
Great place to go either with couple or a group of friends
Amazing, couldn't believe that I actually managed to leg a late night table so last minute. The service and food was perfect as it is every time.
Excellent find!! ... were travelling from abroad and found it hidden away in an alley ... our best meal in Edinburgh!!
The restaurant is beautiful. Great cocktails and beer. Ordered the chateaubriand and was delish
We discovered Monteiths via a quick search on Open Table and couldn't be happier. Hands down, our best dining experience in Edinburgh. As a party of 8, it was often difficult to find a location that could accommodate us but Monteiths did so easily. The restaurant is a bit hidden down one of the Closes but it is worth the discovery. The menu was diverse and all items came out cooked perfectly and presented beautifully. The cocktails were well crafted and the service was superior. Thank you for a wonderful evening!
Food is to die for and I love this quirky and cosy atmosphere.
Very unique ambience, cosy place. Food excellent and good variety . Staff very attentive, it was a very busy time early Saturday evening, staff apologised for the wait for our main course- we had not even notice and where happy enjoying our drinks and relaxing
nice food but the portions were extremely small, pretty shocking for the price to be honest.
friendly however the tables are far too close to one another and the staff literally have to stand over the top of you with the card machine to get a signal.
Music was superb, the loudness wasn’t an issue but the tables being so close to one another made other people’s conversations noticeable.
Not many options. Knew this before booking but just a heads up for anyone that’s planning on going, have a read first.
Food was very good but it look almost 2 hours for our food to come.
As usual, Monteiths were very accommodating. I increased the number in the party 2 hours before wet we’re due to arrive but they found us a fantastic table with plenty of space.
Service and the menu were excellent.
We were looking forward to this meal as our last in Scotland after a two week long trip. Upon entering, the atmosphere and decor looked promising. That faded quickly however, as we waited an unacceptably long time for anyone to take our drink order, even longer for the drinks to arrive and even more extended amounts of time for our main order to be taken, starters to arrive and mains to arrive. Service was not only slow, but at times terse and unapologetic.
There were too many tables in the small space making seating very tight (two of my party had to get up so I could exit and use the washroom during one of the long waits for service) and conversations from nearby tables made it difficult to converse with my own table. To make the experience worse, a VERY loud group was directly behind us. I realize this is not the fault of the restaurant; however, this group’s at times offensive remarks made for awkward stares at our table and glares from other guests nearby. I’m quite surprised no staff asked them to lower their voices or apologize to those around them for the unpleasant experience.
On to the food - it was OK. They clearly were going for very upscale presentation but two in my group got incomplete or wrong orders and some of the food that did come was improperly cooked, lukewarm, or so overdone that it was difficult to eat.
The final blow to my low review was the fact that the bill did not include the 15% discount Open Table advertised for this restaurant. I didn’t book this place for the discount, nor was it even a deciding factor, but it was a benefit after booking that I didn’t receive. Once we finally got the bill, I was beyond done and the group behind us growing more obnoxious that I didn’t ask for the bill to be revised; however, if this is a benefit offered, it shouldn’t be the responsibility of the guest to ask for a correction.
Overall, this was not the experience I expected and I certainly would not recommend this restaurant to anyone.
The service was a little slow, but it was a busy night. Lovely setting and fantastic food. Would definitely recommend.
Best restaurant of our entire two week trip in Scotland!
Best Cocktails in Edinburgh! great menu, great atmosphere, really enjoyed it.
Good service and excellent food. Set lunch value for money.
Lovely long lunch fantastic atmosphere - small portions suited some not others - will definitely be returning
Accommodating serving staff to my dining partner desiring a starter as a main, no problem. Also helpful advice over choosing a wine to suit our palate. I had the cod which was a little over cooked in my opinion but certainly not something to complain about. Be mindful you need to order side dishes to get a portion of veggies with your meal.
