Excellent friendly service and delicious food. Monty's caters easily for vegans, one of whom we had in our party. Very good restaurant choice in Southsea.
We booked via Open Table on the day (for that evening) and received the confirmation e-mail. Unfortunately when we arrived we were told there was no booking for us as when booking via Open Table, the bookings do not come through /checked by restaurant until the following day,! So others beware ! We waited at the bar as they said a table would not be long-it was in the end about 40 mins. Food was quite tasty, no bread with starter of smoked salmon available as run out.
Booked a table for my & partners anniversary, Onece we arrived the restaurant was closed, so I telephoned the next day & spoke to a member of staff & he said we are closed Monday & Tuesday but there website says open 7days a week, he was very rude & the manager never returned my call & no apology nothing at all, would not recommend this place at all.
Lovely welcoming staff and cocktails were great. Food was delicious
Celebrated birthdays with friends at Monty's Wine Bar and restaurant for their Sunday lunch. Once again 'they did it' and served the tastiest lunch. Service is fabulous and employees extremely attentive without being intruding and nothing is too much trouble. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting the Portsmouth area. A 15min walk or 5 min taxi ride from Portsmouth station but definitely worth travelling. The décor is lovely and they have a wonderful bar on entry and a formal laid dining room at the rear that whilst looks formal is extremely welcoming and relaxing. If I had a Monty's in London I would be a regular diner.
Excellent service in the restaurant and the food was also very good.
Nice ambiance and atmosphere
We booked on-line about half an hour before, and this hadn't filtered through when we arrived. But the staff could not have been more friendly and the food was great. You are prepared to allow for little things going wrong when the service is so friendly and helpful.
Recommended for a nice atmosphere - fillet steak is great.
Given as a gift afternoon tea for two. Lovely premises with comfortable chairs and a fabulous host for whom nothing was too much trouble. We were never rushed or fussed over so it was extreamly relaxing experience. Only one very small criticsm - the tea pot was too small so had to ask several times for a refill (which was refilled very promptly😀). Overall would recommend and will return myself.
I had a voucher for my birthdays for Afternoon tea for four. Great service and we were provided with extra sandwiches when we ran out. Our teapots were also refilled constantly.
Mixed feelings. Some things were good. Service was slow and room was mostly empty of staff for the first hour, and then it was all a bit hit and miss. Some of the food was good but not a place to go back to. Regulars seem to be happy and also get special treatment. A bit disappointing given some of the great reviews. Maybe it was an off night.
Lovely experience and excellent food. A fantastic place to celebrate our 38th wedding anniversary but will visit again soon.
first time here will be back great food and service recommend this place
I was really looking forward to going to Montys and was really disappointed .. the quality of food was not to a high standard considering the price .. my partners mash was freezing cold when it came out we complained and they brang another portion out which was piping hot too straight from microwave .. apology was given but nothing else's won't be returning
Food was excellent, service was good.
Only negative comment I would make is I found it very noisy.
Food had a nice flavour but was only Luke warm and over priced for the portion sizes.......did comment to the waiting staff after we had our starters only for the main course to be the same. Wouldn't recommend or go back again.
Very friendly staff, beautifully furnished restaurant, good food, so an enjoyable evening all round.
Amazing brunch! Great service! Will most certainly be going back and would definitely recommend . Think we'll be making it a regular monthly treat
This is the review I contacted Monty's about directly - but have not had a response to:
We had a small bottle of Prosecco on arrival which was unfortunately not very cold. We sat in the bar area and listened to the front of house lady telling the people on the table behind about a fight she (nearly?) had with another woman. Charming!
Amuse Bouche – supposed to be a “bite size taster”. We had a little cracker and topping (fine) but each with a lump of stale, hard bread. Surprising. We asked for butter to help it go down, but it wasn’t very nice – or indeed needed with an amuse bouche.
My partner had soup. There were no soup spoons on the table, so we asked for one and I, not my partner, was given a dessert spoon.
Another small, hard lump of bread turned up with my ham hock starter and my partner had a huge slice of bread on the side of his soup – not very dainty or appetizing-looking.
The mains were good, but other people in the restaurant were given the usual menu whereas we were simply told to chose from the Festive menu.
The amaretto dessert was dreadful – tasteless and dry and I encourage you to take this off the menu sharpish or change the recipe to make it edible.
Our bill was for another table, possibly the people on the table behind us who left a few minutes earlier, but we guessed we would have paid a similar amount, so we settled that one!
The young guys on the bar were pleasant, and although a little rough round the edges when it came to service (the dessert spoon for example) were fine, as was the young girl also serving who actually took our payment at the end even though she had her coat on and was just about to leave.
When we left, the lady on the front of house asked if our meal was OK, to which I replied, “yes, it was Ok” and she said “just OK?” Sorry, your standards have really dropped and we cannot recommend your restaurant to others based on our experience on Saturday, which is a shame given that we have done in the past.
Really disappointed with the whole evening, the only saving grace was the lovely manageress. The food was bland, not good value for money and we all left still feeling hungry.
The evening felt chaotic in there, smashed glasses, so many waiting staff stood around and the chef apparently walked out half way through service.
Wouldn't go again. Or recommend it!
Overall really disappointing. The wrong order was put through which meant it had to be recooked. However, rather than doing this straight away the other dinners were served first and we were made to wait nearly an hour and a half for our main course.
I had the lamb which was a really small portion and over cooked. The starters were okay and arrived promptly. The Malbec was good.
The staff were apologetic but for the money, really not worth it.
Enjoyable evening served by friendly, helpful and flexible staff. We had a family party of 7 with 2 Coeliacs, two vegetarians, an octogenarian and a grand daughter. All of us enjoyed the evening with an ambience that was conducive to conversation. Small cosy restaurant, would go back.
Great food, lovely bar area, very very slow service, no consideration for children dining at all, not much room for large groups of more than 1, would recommend for a nice evening drink or meal for two
Have visited on several occasions, first time for lunch. Shorter version of the dinner menu, inventive food, excellent combination of flavours, I had fillet steak which was beautifully cooked, and the triple cooked chips were good, my husband had the sea bream which he pronounced was perfect. Very good wine choice, at reasonable prices, and a cocktail list to savour. Service and ambience are excellent. Will always recommend.
We revived a very warm welcome, and I personal enjoyed every single mouthful of every course, I can happily say this was true for each one of us . I 'm looking forward to our next visit were I hope the service staff has completed his training and become more attentive to the customers needs and his knowledge his improved , over all a really enjoyable evening
Great food. Just maybe we had abit of a 'busy' night with regards to service. We had to wait for 2 out of 4 starters to arrive, so we had to ask for them. Again on the main course, all 4 dishes came out together but with none of the sides that we ordered, so had to ask for them again. Desserts, all 3 arrived together but the coffee ask for did not come. We had to ask.
The restaurant had seemed to have all tables booked for 8pm (as was ours) so maybe just abit of a bottle neck on that night. Would definately give it another go though
After a shaky start we had a nice meal. When we arrived we hung around - no one seemed to notice, we ordered cocktails, received chipped glass, and the wrong drink, When pointed it out, no one did anything.....not sure why as staff seemed very well intended!
Things improved with the meal. Pigeon starter was excellent, pork was too cold from the fridge and lacked favour, mushroom starter was disappointing.
Steaks were wonderful - to perfection as was the lamb on a morocco theme.
Cheese board was good if sparse and the white chocolate cheesecake with the lime dressing could have been amazing but the lime dressing was hard to get at as was all over the granite serving plate, and banoffe pie was reported as awesome!
so almost there, but little things let this meal with great potential down as an experience, but would recommend. Cory did a great job looking after our table and with more experience he'll rock it. We will be back and once the little things are ironed out Monty's will be one of the best
Good food, good service, comfortable surroundings. Great evening.
The premises has received a complete refurbishment within the last 12 months and is now very well appointed. The Tables may be a little close together but not uncomfortably so. The dining chairs are extremely comfortable. The food was excellent and the waiter very friendly and knowledgeable. There is parking closeby but it could be a little awkward for anyone with a mobility problem as the road outside is quite narrow and is two-way!
Nice atmosphere, friendly staff, excellent food would definitely go back
Good food, great ambiance and pleasant staff
Great night out lovely service and food will go again thank you.
We had to wait an hour for our pre booked table. Service was very slow even though we were the only diners. One choice of meat for the Sunday roast. It was pork but they didn't have any apple sauce! Good was ok but we won't be going back
A small bar/restaurant however a great atmosphere and I would definitely return for another meal.
We thought the restaurant was a good addition to Southsea dining. It was a bit too expensive to go to other than for special occassions. We were looking for a replacement for the recently closed kitchen door restaurant over the other side of Elm Grove. But this was not as good value. One criticism was that the staff were too keen to sell us extra dishes we did not actually need. So we ordered a side dish of broccoli only to find our main dish came with a large amount of broccoli anyway. A good restaurant would have pointed that out. So we wasted money and food which did not go down well. Puddings were a bit disappointng . ordered icecream thinking I only got one scoop so only ordered one flavour. When it arrived there were three scoops of icecream all the same flavour. Again good restaurant staff would pointed this out and given the customer the choice to choose more than one flavour. Strawberry and red pepper sauce - no sign of any flavour of red pepper. Chocolate tart very heavy and pastry very very thick. However starters and main courses were excellent, so we would go again but might avoid the puddings. Chips superb.
Friendly welcome with lots of advice on the menu and wine list. The service was very attentive and genuine.
Returned here following a name change and a refurb. We were pleased to see that the food was still of a good quality, the staff attentive and the area clean and well presented.
We heard really good things about the restaurant before we booked and needless to say we weren't disappointed! Fabulous food, lovely ambience and attentive service. Without doubt one of the best restaurants we have visited in Southsea! We will definitely return soon ...
Great service, lovely food and unlimited prosecco - what more could you want? 10/10 would definitely be back!
Lovely setting and well finished decor. Service was spot on, always checking if everything was alright. Pre-drinks in the stylish bar and then taken throu to the interment dinning room. Good options on menu and would highly recommend
Best meal I have had in Portsmouth in a long time, I couldn't find a fault with anything. Posh but not pretentious!
