Bak was an amazing find in the up and coming docks' neighborhood of Amsterdam (a 15-minute walk from the old town). The food was amazing--particularly great for anyone who loves fish and vegetables (although it does a great job with meat as well). It is an all prix-fixe menu, as the chef prepares a new menu each day--not cheap, but you definitely get your money's worth in terms of creative, delicious food. The servers accommodate dietary restrictions and preferences (although they prefer to find out ahead of the visit). The restaurant's decor is simple--keeping the older building's lines and interior in mind; windows look out onto an amazing view of the docks and harbor of Amsterdam. A huge window in the entry of the restaurant gives an even better view. Diners often got up between courses to look out of the large window. The atmosphere is fun--young, lively European (including Dutch) foodies seem to prefer this place. All in all, this was a high point of our visit to Amsterdam. More

Discover Houthaven

If industrial chic is your style, then this is the ‘hood for you. With a name literally meaning “lumber port,” this area is situated along the IJ river in Amsterdam’s western port. The local eateries reflect the maritime surroundings—one notably hip restaurant is located in a converted 1920’s ferry, while another bistro is known for their cocktails and late-night activity. If you’re looking for an intimate night of homestyle cooking, a local eatery serves market-driven, four-course meals amongst checkered tablecloths and an open kitchen. For a neighborhood that has the grit of the ports in its periphery, these bars and restaurants will beckon you in with an inviting coziness.
