Sambal Shiok Laksa Bar
Price: Moderate•Malaysian•4.5(61)Mandy Yin is one of the few Malaysian chef/owners in the UK, having founded Sambal Shiok in London in 2013. She is a Malaysian-born Chinese of Peranakan Nyonya heritage. "I take inspiration from everything I ate in my childhood growing up in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia. Then I mix it up and put a new slant on it.
After a series of sell-out runs for her pop up laksa bar across London, Mandy opened her flagship restaurant in in 2018 to critical acclaim for her signature Peranakan Nyonya curry laksa.
Sambal Shiok Laksa Bar has gone on to achieve cult, award-winning status – Ching He Huang’s Best Innovation Award 2019 and Timeout’s North London Best Loved Restaurant 2022.

Tired of the loosely French inspired humdrum of restaurants popping up across the city of London? Do you like holidays? Do you like cold drinks and warm service? If you've answered yes to one or more of these then perhaps Tollington's can refresh both your pallet and your mind
The idea came from a mirror in an antiques market and a love for a more informal approach to dining, the result a chippy in North London with church pews bolted to the walls to be leaned on and eaten from. The focus is on fish but the menu transcends just fish, leaving no stone unturned in the never ending quest for flavour
Split between two rooms, the kitchen and bar shared by customers as they perch on bar stools and enjoy dinner and a show. The back room - lower lighting, lower seating, a slight calm compared to the front room. Works of art from friends of the restaurant adorn the walls and floors

The sauces with the fish dishes were perfect - complementary, and not overwhelming. The green salad looked a bit plain was was really fresh, and served with a delicate dressing. The wine is very expensive - I think the cheapest bottle was £50 - but very good (we had the muscadet and the trebbiano). The only tiny complaint is that we would have preferred the three dishes to arrive together, but I guess they would if we'd made a point of asking.
