One Square Restaurant
Always one of our favourite venues for family get togethers. The Sunday lunch buffet is excellent value for money - delicious array of starters and desserts, choice of 2 roasts with tea and coffee all for £29 per adult and £14.50 per child. Live jazz adds to the relaxed atmosphere. We highly recommend One Square to everyone.
Arrived 5 mins early - offered to sit/ wait or go straight to table (due to wheelchair) “but we’re not open for a few minutes”.
No indication that open for serving - so we just made a move at 12.31 to the food counters.
Excellent starters and variety.
Main course of very good quality.
Sweets impressive and worth a return trip especially given the ice cream option too - nice touch!
Cheese board - fab
Waiters efficient but not all as personable as perhaps could have been.
Worth a return trip when we’re back.
It is always a nice restaurant to visit and the staff are very friendly but let you still enjoy your food without undue pampering which I like. I have been to the restaurant many times and it’s always good .
Nice night but not keen to go back.
My husband enjoyed his steak but I think at £34, you should serve with more than watercress & a sauce.
Vegetarian options were really poor, I had falafel burger, really greasy and flavours didn’t really go.
Very much a hotel restaurant feeling, no real atmosphere.
Desserts were very mediocre, we eat some of them.
An excellent and very reasonably priced menu, with the option of a two or three course pre-theatre alternative from 5 PM, and an attractive wine list make for a really enjoyable experience, especially with such efficient and friendly service, and an attractive setting overlooking Festival Square and the Usher Hall. The well chosen menu items, the presentation of the dishes, and the excellence of the service are all equally admirable. It is a pleasure to eat here.
I went to one square for afternoon tea and was not disappointed. The service and food were excellent, with a lot of variety. It was actually more food than my husband and I could eat. If I return to Edinburgh I will definitely go there again and highly recommend one square if you’re looking for a relaxing afternoon tea experience! We also had a view of the castle from where we were sitting.
Great service! Jess was a fantastic hostess!!
Excellent value and great experience. Lovely relaxed feeling to the place and great quality of food. The jazz band added to the overall experience.
Great buffet Sunday lunch, lovely music too. Will come back
Favourite Sunday Brunch ever and we all enjoy the day out. Thanks!
Booked the place the night before and wasn’t really sure what to expect but fell in love with the place as we walked in. The staff were incredibly nice and helpful, provided us with bread (twice!) throughout the meal and even gave us places to go for drinks afterwards. From the photos, the food is sublime. Please go and try out One Square; it may be on the more expensive side but you’ll know it’s well worth it once you’ve had some great food and terrific service!
The only thing I can say honestly say about this restaurant is, you are really missing out if you don't go. The food, the service the price and the ambiance are top drawer. I can find nothing bad to say about this restaurant.
We booked a pre Royal Edinburgh Tattoo meal on Saturday 24 August. Although we arrived early, we were still shown directly to our table and were given venues and ordered drinks and water.
We had the choice of two courses for £19. This also included a glass of wine but the bread we had was an extra £1.50 each, though our water was complimentary. There were 3 or 4 choices for each course, which give us a good variety to chose from.
Both my partner and I chose to have a main course and desert. Both main meals were excellent, prepared to perfection and well presented. My partner had a lamb chop and I had a fillet of bream.
Almost as soon as we had finished, our dishes were cleared an our sweets arrived and they too were excellent. My partner chose ice cream and I chose a strawberry cheesecake with a yoghurt sorbet. At this point we ordered coffee, but this was the only let down of the evening, as it took 25 minutes and a reminder to a member of staff for the coffee to arrive. However when the bill arrived the coffee was not charged to the bill.
All in all a very enjoyable evening in a lovely restaurant with attentive and helpful staff. Both my partner and I were sufficiently impressed to want to return and experience their full menthe next time we are in Edinburgh.
great , food at good price, Staff fantastic I would definetley book here again if in the area,
The food was quite good. However...when our food was served we asked for the wine list to order a second bottle. After waiting several minutes for the waitress to return, we ordered another bottle. She returned after several more minutes with a different (much lower quality) bottle and informed us the bottle we ordered wasn’t available. I asked for the wine list again. By the time she returned, we were almost finished so we didn’t order another bottle. We ordered some desserts and a couple of whiskeys and ports. One port was poured about twice the amount of the other. The whiskeys were poured about a half an ounce each. The waitress seemed very inexperienced and perhaps even clueless. They also added a 10% service charge for 4 people. There were other service issues that all added up to a less than satisfying experience.
Whilst the set menu was reasonably priced, the ambiance and overall quality of the food was not great. We sat in the main restaurant and on several occasions our conversations were interrupted by a bagpiper who lead a procession of guests through the space towards a private dining area. This was incredibly noisy and, although I'd imagine this was fun for those taking part, it felt quite disruptive to the other guests and gave a feeling of class divide. The food was okay but was symptomatic of being overambitious yet failing to deliver on flavour and quality. I had the lentil and seabass main course, which was mostly bland lentils and lacking in texture. I could not eat the cheesecake desert as it felt as if the dairy was off. The general design of the restaurant was pleasant and clean. Staff were enthusiastic and friendly but lacked proper systems - we were asked multiple times by different staff if we wanted to order drinks / meals / deserts.
We are there before the Tattoo with a special offer deal and it was very good value for money. The food was nice, but not as good as when we last came 2 years ago. For example, our friends had the pork and enjoyed it whereas we had sea bass and lentils are found it pretty tasteless, which was a shame. The waiters and waitresses were very friendly and attentive and the interior decor and ambience is very good indeed.
Food, location and setting were perfect, only let down was the service, or lack of! We had to repeatedly hunt down our server, we asked for bread and dessert menu, both of which never arrived! Very disappointed ☹️
We used the one square restaurant as recommended by the Royal Tattoo. Great choice. We had the pre-show menu which had plenty that both my wife and I liked the look of. I cannot fault the food it was excellent. The only issue we had was the original service was slow as we were asked if we wanted water this we had ask for again this was after 25mins of sitting down. Once the food arrived this was forgotten as the flavours were wonderful. Would we use this again and the answer is yes we would.
The RMT menu was not easy to find when checking the website and I had to make contact beforehand to get a copy provided.
Some more choice would be a definite incentive for pre-event meals. What we had was enjoyable and good value and we would use the restaurant again. However with more choice and/or say 3 courses with a drink for £20 would mean much more regular use.
Car parking facility was really appreciated.
Still good, but all seemed a bit more hurried than last time, with the presentation of the food not QUITE up to the previous very high standard
I was in a meal deal connected with the Tattoo. The menu for this was very limited but both main and dessert were excellent. A little annoying to find an extra charge for the bread, which didn’t feature in the deal. I don’t mind paying but feel it was not explained, and so came across as a little underhand. On balance, food was excellent, though next time I’ll probably forego any tattoo related deal.
Pre Tattoo meal. Staff charming and polite, service, ambiance and food excellent. Would definitely recommend booking the Pre Tattoo special. No complaints.
Excellent service from start to finish. Lovely location. Food absolutely delicious. Couldn’t fault it in anyway.
Wonderful staff and service - thank you!
Had the pre-Tattoo menu which although limited in selection was still very good. Great atmosphere and very good attentiveness from the staff without being intrusive. Would go again and also try the full menu. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone.
Stunning Sunday lunch
Superb location. Even saw the fireworks from.the castle.
Our waitress was so very kind and efficient
Delicious food and aervice overall thank you
Right from the start the evening was spoilt (staff were rude and aggressive) - we had booked the Tattoo dining offer and had phoned pre booking to check on vegan/vegetarian options and had been assured we could select from a vegan menu. As this was a birthday occasion we had wanted this evening and meal to be special. On being seated we were told we could just have what was listed (no vegan option), ambiance in the dining area was nothing special - like a street cafe. Glass of wine offered with meal was less than a half glass and one waitress was seen decanting all the left overs from multiple open bottles into one newly open bottle and then serving this to guests!!!! so classy for a sheraton hotel restaurant. Soup starter was a tiny portion but this turned out a blessing as it was extremely salty (Kidney failure) and smoked haddock flakes were big chunks of grisly flesh and full of bones!!! absolutely disgusting!
The main course of sea bream was a bit better (at least less bones) - would think a kitchen of this standard could fillet a fish properly! We skipped pudding and coffee just to get out of there as quickly as possible. very disappointed
I received an email with an offer as I was going to the military tattoo. I booked a table. the restaurant was relaxed and sophisticated and the food was delicious
Food was good and well presented. Staff friendly and overall a pleasant and convenient spot for a bit of dinner before the tattoo. Parking a bonus with 50% off so cost us £8 for 5 hours worth of parking in the city centre, 10 minute easy walk to castle.
A superb pre Tattoo meal, exquisite food and outstanding service.
Very good value for money and would highly recommend!
Food was delicious and nothing too much for the staff.
A great dining experience.
We even benefitted from the bagpipes from a Conference in the adjoining room!
Staff is very friendly, the service is excellent and the food is delicious. Highly recommend as the atmosphere is lovely too
Start of a wonderful evening. Very quiet when we arrived, staff where very friendly and helpful, service could not be any better and the staff where only too willing to be obliging. Modern decor but very relaxing atmosphere.
Unfortunately we do not live in Edinburgh as it would certainly be a regular haunt for us.
We booked the pre event 2 course meal plus a glass of wine. We had tickets for the Edinburgh Royal Military Tattoo so this was ideal for us. I booked before we arrived in Edinburgh. We had no problems finding the restaurant or with the booking. Food was excellent and certainly excellent value at £19 per person. The staff were friendly, polite & extremely busy due to the popularity of the offer. My only negative is that the restaurant was a little noisy due to the number of people, however this is my issue and not down to the restaurant. I would certainly book again.
This was a perfect start to our evening - before The Tattoo. We had the tattoo menu which was excellent value - 2 courses and a glass of wine included. My husband raved about the soup - watercress with smoked fish pieces. The sea bass was perfectly cooked and all was served in a cheerful and professional manner. A great start to our Edinburgh break. Would definitely revisit should the opportunity arise.
I had planned for dinner for my Spanish friends before going to the Military Tattoo. My friends were unaware that they were going to the Tattoo and I wanted to keep this a surprise for as long as possible. The marvellous staff at One Square helped me to achieve this by providing menus that did not mention the tattoo.
It was my friends first visit to Scotland and I can say without hesitation that the staff at One Square made it a very memorable event.
I would like to thank you and I hope to see you again in the future.
Very enjoyable meal, great service and ambiance. Good value for money, will certainly look out for these offers in the future.
Excellent value for money. worth the pre booking all the staff were prepared and ready for such pre bookings which also enabled me to receive confirmation text messages. will use again on another Edinburgh visit
