I dine here all the time so I was very surprised by the very poor service last weekend. We were one of only 3 tables in the restaurant ( two 3 tops and one 2 top) and it took 45 minutes to receive our food. When we finally got our food one of our friends still waited over 5 more minutes for their food to arrive. So, our food started getting cold as we waited for our friends food as we would not start without her. Very frustrating to say the least.
The food would’ve tasted better if I wasn’t swatting fruit flies every few seconds, nearly knocked down drinks in the process of waving my arms about like a lunatic. Also overheard the kitchen staff mention there’s a lot of flies today. Nothing done about it when pointed out to waiting staff. Ruined the whole experience to the point I stopped eating and just had my dish as takeaway.
We have to Papaya Tree several times in a couple of years and never been disappointed !
But this time we even wondered if it wasn’t a new owner...
Anyway, papaya salads were warm
Ultima pad thai was disgusting
And the rest was just ok
So definitely not our favorite Thai anymore
Food was great. Server in training - evening was entertaining. If looking for outstanding service - it was lacking significantly.
The food was delicious!
Top notch Thai Food. Huge choice and a very good value lunch Menu
The set-up and location are not at their best but the warm welcome and attentive service makes it up for it
Great food, service was friendly and welcoming. :)
Very nice evening as we wanted to catch up with friends. Quiet enough to chat properly. Great food and staff very friendly
I like the ambiance. However I found a hair in my food and there seemed to be some difficulty explaining why I required a new order was required. I was also charged for said item.
I pre-booked a table for a business dinner with clients after a long day at a trade exhibition. The service and staff were absolutely first class and the food was delicious with a good choice on the menu and the staff were well informed regards the meals spiciness , friendly staff and nothing was too much trouble. Recommended to all.
First visit to Papaya Tree. Basement restaurant, so not so easy to locate as no “shopfront”. The place was deserted when we arrived, but booked at 12:30, so early for a meal... , also it was a hot, sunny Saturday AND the Royal wedding, so maybe most people were outside an/or watching TV..?! As I was catching up with a friend, I really did not mind, as it was easy to have a relaxed conversation. Comfortable seating.
I really enjoyed my main course, (a prawn curry) as did my friend hers, but with a portion of rice, each, charged at almost £5 and a shared bottle of water, also about £5, plus 12.5% Service Charge that was rather expensive at £24 a head!
Though I have noticed that eating out in London has become rather more expensive, generally. . . .
Really, when ordering a curry, which is a “wet” dish, lots of sauce, the dish should come with rice included in the price!!!
There was an “issue” with the credit card machine not working at first....., but when I said I had no cash and suggested they unplug the terminal and try again after reconnecting, it seemed to work. . . .
We also then received a printed bill, instead of the first, hand-written one. . . . .
2 Other tables got occupied during our 2 hour visit.
Without a doubt the best Thai food in the neighborhood
The best Thai food in Kensington! Always consistently delicious and absolutely lovely staff! Feels like home..I travel to London for work several times a month and it's my #1 go too 😃
Lovely staff and best Thai in Kensington! Food is consistently great every time. I am a regular!
I enjoyed my meal. It wasn't anything outstanding but I'd be happy to return.
Nice food. Very quiet, so not much atmosphere. No selection of Gin, only Gordon's, disappointing considering the current trend!
Absolutely wonderful and consistently good food every time!
Absolutely brilliant. Authentic and delicious Thai food and excellent service in a great location.
Had a really lovely time. Thank you :)
Fancied something a bit different for a business lunch with a customer. Chose the Papaya Tree and very pleased I did. Our food was excellent and very authentic, the papaya salad starter was right up there with anything I've had in Thailand. Having been the first into lunch I was pleasantly surprised to realise that the restaurant was almost full within the hour and all Thai diners! Very much a recommendation if the restaurant is considered good enough for local tastes. Don't be fooled by the almost hidden entrance or the descent into a cave like interior, this is a little gem of a restaurant.
Food always fresh and service friendly, if a bit chaotic sometimes, if staff is down.
Some dishes, small portions, in relation to cost.
Very well cooked food, fresh ingredients and varied choice of dishes.
The service is personal, friendly and very obliging. A very homely ambiance.
The food was SO tasty and came very quickly after ordering. Would definitely recommend.
Poor service, staff were more then phones then servicing customers. Poor food, it was find the chicken and fish in the dishes. Poor value for money and then 12.5% service charge was added to the bill.
It was lovely. I can't fault the food. It was AMAZING
Very, very good Thai food. Excellent! The restaurant was down a flight of stairs....the lighting was a little dim but it was adequately appointed. Will go back.
You must visit!
Very welcoming and clean. Food was outstanding, well done!
It's a small restaurant with only 2 waitresses. On a Tuesday night, it was less than half full. The waitress who served us was very polite but fairly incompetent. We ordered a share platter for starter and beers but after 10-15 minutes they still haven't arrived. So we asked the other waitress who happened to walk past us, but she didn't seem to care. Another minute later we manage to call our waitress over and asked her to chase up on our starter and beers, and then it didn't take much longer before she brought them over.
The food was ok, nothing to rave about. Interestingly they have a chef's special Ultimate Pad thai which was about £17, £9 more expensive than the normal pad thai. We didn't order it but quiet intrigued by the price tag.
After finishing our starter, they took away our plates and forks. So later when our waitress came back to give me clean plates, she seemed a bit confused rather we needed full set of cutleries for the mains.
It was a little gathering for a friend's birthday, so we brought in a birthday cake in advance and asked the waitress to put it aside. When we finished the mains, we asked our waitress to take out the cake. She brought out the cake on a plate only, so we asked if she can put the candle on it, and she reacted as though she did see the candle but didn't know what to do with it and hence left it in the bag. She even asked if we wanted the candle lit. I'm not sure if I'm being harsh here because we've never had this issue before in many many restaurants we've had birthday meals at.
To be fair, our waitress was lovely and came back a few times to pour us water. She just seemed inexperienced or lack of common sense.
The food was excellent and rich with authentic Thai flavours whereas the service was pleasant and friendly. A lovely Friday evening dinner for two.
Service was bad and slow, the food tasted awfully and it was too expensive forthe quality we got.
Food is amazing and that's the most important thing!
Delicious thai food in a hidden lovely restaurant. The owners are lovely and service couldn't be better.
Had lunch at Papaya tree for the first time in a while. This is one of my favourite Thai restaurants in London and definitely the best value for money that I've been to, particularly at lunch. Staff friendly. Green curry is excellent. Only downside is the decor is a little bland and the place is usually half empty at lunch time.
The Thai tapas sounds good on the menu but not one of the seven dishes we had lived up to expectations.
Duck curry only had a couple of chewy bits of meat, Pad Thai with no flavour and stodgy, spring rolls & wonton with no filling and dumplings full of water.
The restaurant is in a basement with no Windows. It's so dark customers have to use the light on their mobile to read the menu.
I won't go back.
We went here for a pre gig meal. Starters of dim sums were very nice- moist and tasty. Chicken satay skewers were however on the dry side but we're well presented with a pleasant satay sauce. Our mains of the tamarind duck and beef were also very good. We still had room (just about!) for dessert of coconut ice cream and deep fried banana which finished our meal very nicely! Pleasant and attentive staff so overall a pleasant experience here.
We had been out to watch the rugby so were a bit worse for wear, but the Thai meal was just the ticket. The restaurant itself had some repairs either needed or going on (not sure which) and the service was a bit hit and miss but the food was fantastic. Would definitely go back if in the area.
Went here for my brother's birthday and liked the idea of it having Thai tapas and this place was recommended to us by a friend. To be fair, it was alright but nothing special. The food was fine, slightly overpriced though, and if I am honest, I have had better from local take away places. Disappointed so won't be back time soon!!
Difficult to have dinner there in less than two hours, they were even slow to serve the drinks, we actually had to insist several times to get the drinks and they weren't busy at all (3 tables occupied) . I felt invisible to the waiters.
We've been coming here for years and it's always good. The food is excellent value and delicious. They've just revamped their menu and there's a huge variety of lighter dishes and main meals.
Well worth a visit for lunch or dinner if you're in the area.
I went there with a friend for dinner on a Sunday night. The weather wasn't good, which may explain why we were the only people there. I think the restaurant does a lot of take away service, because their kitchen was busy. Being the only people there didn't matter and did not feel awkward (as it can do in some places). The food was great and served by a very nice waiter. I am definitely going back again.
