Peckham Refreshement Rooms are a small restaurant and bar serving simple but delicious charcuterie, cheeses and French and Italian inspired dishes alongside good wines, beers and cocktails. Located in Peckham Rye in an old Art deco building between West-African hairdressing and Pound Shops it was important to create a social space were everyone feels welcome. Guest are meant to spend time with friends here, gather around good food and enjoy the service of a young team that is proud of the produce served. The interior design reflects this spirit by using very simple and forgotten materials materials from the early 20th century such as Bakelite and seating guests on long shared tables. The overall impression is warm and welcoming.

Booked a table for 4 almost 2 months in advance for a Sunday lunchtime. (Have had fabulous food here every time, and exactly a year ago had a wonderful Sunday roast.) Very impressed with Open Table confirmation and reminder (the day before). With the day-before email, Open Table attached a menu for Sunday Lunch (which we were hoping for); but when we arrived we were told only brunch is served on Sundays now. Having said that, it was very good - but we had booked in the hopes of a choice of roast dishes - just as the menu had suggested, and which we've had before. So £100 for brunch was a bit expensive (yes, we had a bottle of wine). I still think their `other time' roasts are what makes the Refreshment Room so very special. So, lower mark because we didn't get what we thought we'd booked for - but a happy Sunday lunchtime all the same.

The bavette steak was sliced and medium-rare and served with homemade horseradish cream and a pickled walnut, also some toasted bread and watercress. We ordered new potatoes and green beans. All of it was fabulous. Generous portions all round so I'd order only one veg between two in future. Excellent house wine, reasonably priced (for London) at £20 bottle. Happy, efficient staff.

My husband's spelt dish was lovely but my confit duck could have done with crispier skin. If it had, I would have given the food 4 stars. Portions were modest, which was perfect as we weren't excessively hungry.

This was a real surprise. Who could I said that behind the train track where some really good peoe that cares for good food. Good service and a fantastic bartender. It's simple but well executed. Had pork belly and it was so juicy and crispy could not help to keep eating other things like sauceges, brea, and salad beans. I had a great time and the place it's quite pretty

Both my dining partner and I were blown away by our meal at the incredibly trendy Peckham Refreshment Rooms. The menu was limited, but we were still spoilt for choice among the great selection of delectable-sounding dishes on offer. We were surprised and a little disappointed when 3 of our options had already sold out by the time we sat down to eat at 7pm. But the food we were served was exquisite in its presentation and execution. The flavour combinations were fresh, modern and exciting, based around locally sourced, high quality ingredients. The sea bream with salsa vierge and the summer truffle risotto were both excellent. One thing that left a slightly bitter taste was that our drinks bill had been inexplicably doubled up, and a side dish which we never received (it had sold out) was also included in the total and it all needed sorting out at the end of an otherwise impeccable meal. Instead of £54, we were presented with a bill of £78. I'm sure these were honest mistakes, but unwary diners might not have noticed, and just paid the larger amount. Check, double and triple check your bill, is my advice.

After a tip off from @GingerGourmand we backed up this meal with a visit to Peckham Refreshment Rooms. Again, a very similar setup - two frontage space with a bar splitting the room and an open kitchen with chefs on show. I never got a look at the wine menu so can't say how it compares with Toast(ed) but we were sitting on 500ml Kernel Table Beer bottles - and for £5 that's super value. But it's worth sitting on with some great cheese and truffle honey. The sardines at £3 for a pair were again great value ( I think I'm going to just keep repeating myself) and were well seasoned and popped with flavour. It's an eat with your hands type of affair - and isn't that the best! There's no plates and just a paper tablecloth. It's like they knew I was coming. The prosciutto that had been packed in paprika had a nice spin to it and the beans dressed in garlic and olive oil had that fresh crunch you hope for when eating cooked greens. I saved some space for the dessert special of Amaretto tiramisu which worked well with the addition of the booze. What I love about these places is that they have a menu that changes daily. It keeps us and them on their toes and you know there's chefs in there stretching their culinary muscles. I will definitely be back to sample more of the wares from these guys and I suggest you do too!

We had a very pleasant evening, we felt welcome and liked the fit out of the restaurant. The staff were very friendly and helpful and indeed the service I can not fault in any way. We also enjoyed the food, however we found the choice limited as about a third of items of the short menu had run out. The food we received was well cooked and tasty but very basic cooking that unfortunately did not justified the price or the hype.

The food is good (although not as strong as previous visits) however, I get the feeling that the kitchen is pacing itself. All the starters are cheese, bread or charcuterie, and all the mains are grilled / roasted / fried meat or fish with the same side salad. It's very easy to do food, and not actually that exciting. There's no stews, soups or sauces on the menu at all - a bit 'samey' for my liking really.

We booked a table for 7pm and arrived early. The waitstaff happily sat us at our table and let us catch up and mingle over some wine. We eventually ordered, after some assistance from the very helpful waitstaff. We ordered 5 main dishes for 5 people and shared them all. All of them were delicious and I'd highly recommend the bavette - served rare to perfection - and confit duck with potatoes, roasted quail and baked sea trout. We orderd 2 side salads, but it wasn't really needed as every main comes with greens. Also delicious desserts and a great wine menu. The staff were friendly, helpful but didn't hover. Can't wait to come back to Peckham Refreshment Rooms again.

I went there to celebrate my birthday, we had a table for 8 and it was lovely. Good cocktails to start and very nice house white accompanied our small plates to start and our larger plates. Small but lovely menu, highly recommend and good value too. FYI they have 2 sittings, so it means if you order late in the first sitting you won't have time for dessert as you'll have to vacate your table by 9am regardless.

Went with my girlfriend on a Saturday night, jam packed which was great but since the interior is entirely concrete it was pretty noisy! don't expect a quiet intimate corner. for us food was quick to arrive, not so much for the table next door who said they had to wait 1hr 30mins (dont know how true this is) but they seemed pretty annoyed. service was great for us. they had run out of the seared cod, which seems a bit ridiculous on a saturday night, they said they would use an alternate fish, but instead we got a slip sole dish with caper butter. not what we ordered but it was quite delicious nonetheless. when the bill came they tried to bill us for the cod (which was more expensive) and another dish that we didn't order, this error was rectified quickly and easily so no issue there. all in all, i would definitely return, but perhaps in the week as it was pretty crazy and i prefer somewhere you can have a nice conversation and relax.

Service was brilliant. All the waitresses were very attentive and exeptionally friendly. My girlfriend and I shared the duck confit and fish medley, both - so very tasty. I then had the buttermilk pudding for desert which made me sing some very strange positive noises. The affogato - my partner seemed to enjoy it however it's not my kind of thing. Cocktails were interesting, served stylishly and worth all the penny. The staff and the duck above all were the things to remember. I will rave to everyone I meet (when appropriate) about how excellent they both are.

Had a table for two at the early sitting (6:30). Food was very good. Loved the starters with great charcuterie and cheeses and the mains were well portioned and thought through. Value was decent. Loved the drinks we had at the bar before we sat down at the table. They have a good selection of wines all available by the glass which is a big plus. Service was a bit hit and miss, but to be expected in a place like this. I'm glad that we had the early booking with the other grown ups because we are certainly not hip enough for the post 9 pm crowd :-)

We enjoyed our meal but we felt that there could have been a bit more in the way of accompaniments - veg had to be ordered as a side. We didn't have starters. The main course was well cooked but not very exciting. The desserts were excellent and the portions were OK. I was a bit put off by the 'ironic' (?) newsprint table clothes and half teatowels for napkins. The prices didn't reflect this kind of austerity! Service and staff were friendly and efficient. Liked the water arriving at our table when we did.

Really loved my first visit to The Refreshment Rooms last Friday. We got there early and had an aperitif - white port and tonic and a whiskey mac. The first course of blue cheese with walnuts and a separate dish with toscana salami and tapenade was more-ish and completely delectable. Steak bavette was perfectly cooked, served pink in the middle with hassleback potato and salad. The wine list is small, but that didn't stop our enjoyment of a French carignan red. My only small complaint is that the restaurant was freezing (it was a cold day, but still). This may not be helped by the concrete floors and wooden chairs - the interior could do with warming up a little. A meal for two with three rounds of drinks cost about £65. Good value. And there are plenty of bars in the vicinity to retire to after.

Absolutely loved Peckham Refreshment Rooms! The food was great, our waiter was lovely (even though we we a tad noisy) and the whole experience was incredibly enjoyable. The three of us decided to get a selection of sharing platters rather than individual courses and after copious amounts of cheese, meats and red wine we were all sufficiently stuffed! A great place to come with friends, but I think it would also make a great venue for a romantic dinner.

It is good to support new restaurant...but only up to a point. As others seem to agree on this and other review sites, the portion sizes make a meal pretty expensive as they are tapas style and you need a few. This place is not value for money in my opinion. £35 for prosecco, in Peckham. Really? Similar places nearby are closer to £25. Most of the dishes are small and are made with cheap ingredients such as bavette, sardines, mackrel. Veg is extra. £3.5 for a small bit of chicory or some kale. Yes, kale. You can buy a lorry load for that price at wholesale. This place may get away with it in the celebratory mood running up to the New Year but with new places opening they may struggle at those prices in the new year. If your going for a quick stop before moving on then this place is fine. But beware spending a full evening there, your wallet will be much lighter. We actually left feeling peckish and that's no kidding. Anyway, this is just my personal opinion. I hope it sorts itself out as the area needs a few more eateries. But not at these prices. I like spending money on food but I don't like being ripped off. I read some of the other glowing reports and wonder if we are at the same place. Maybe some of them work there, who knows. See how you get on if you decide to go.

Really enjoyed this place. Quite a few 'similar' restaurants in the area that try to serve smaller dishes that are supposed to be simple in produce but just exceptionally well cooked. Only this place has been able to do that and not make the dishes feel like side dishes. To top it off, the service was great and the bill came as a very pleasant surprise. Comes highly recommended!

If you are going for a little snack then this place is fine. However, if you are going for a meal then the cost soon racks up as the portions are small. Infact it gets pretty expensive. The service was pretty good as was the flavour. Some say they use underused cuts of meat. I say they use the cheap cuts. But this is not reflected in the price. This is designed to increase profit and people are trained to look at this type of menu. I think this is the main focus here. Having said all that, why don't you try it yourself and come back here to review it. Also, there are lots of new places opening up nearby. Take a look around.

I am reluctant to write a great review of this place because it's so good I don't want to share it. The food is always great, the staff are friendly and I always feel like I've got good value for money. They've recently extended so you can book now and it's a slightly more comfortable experinece. Having said that they may have lost a little of the atmosphere which you got from sitting at a busy bar, but I went on a Thursday so it may be better at the weekends. The menu is sort of pan-european small plates. The main dishes are slightly too small to be eaten alone but this gives you opportunity to take advantage of their fantastic cheese and charcuterie as well as starters and sides. May they stay open for years to come!

Booked through OpenTable for the same night, confirmation received but arrived to be told by a scowling barman "you must have booked for tomorrow, we don't accept bookings during service, that would be madness!". This despite the fact that I had a confirmation in the app and a separate email to show I had booked for that night. Nevertheless a table was found - but we were then ignored for about 15 mins. The food is actually very good but the service is very slow, scatty (orders getting lost, wrong items on the bill, wrong food delivered to the wrong tables) and the whole (2 course meal) took about 2.5hrs because the food took so long to come out.

The menu is interesting and the food was good overall. However, the service was terrible and the waitress had clearly had no training and was not briefed on the menu. She was unclear what the dishes were and when our food was served the wrong dish was presented to one of us as his order, which he proceeded to eat. After a 10 minute delay for the last main to arrive (after everyone else) the waiter realised he had served the wrong dish to the wrong person not realising what it was. By then it was half eaten and he didn't offer to cook a fresh dish until this was requested. We were compensated by a drink on the house which was a good gesture. Based on the service I would not recommend this restaurant.
