Great! Perhaps the best restaurant I’ve been to in 2019, great environment and friendly staff. If you are having four course dinner, try the crab. The only thing is the location, quite off centre, but I’ll say the restaurant definitely worth the travel and the hotel itself looks amazing.

We visit Peels about once a year, & this is the third time we’ve chosen the tasting menu. We have always had a fabulous time. The format has changed so that you can choose either a 4 or 7 course tasting menu. There is now no a la carte option. We chose the 4 course tasting menu with the accompanying flight of wines. The flight of wines option was £55 each. In contrast to previous years, the wine served was very frugal. Between 4 people I doubt we enjoyed more 2 bottles of wine in volume, at the absolute most, though I appreciate you are getting the benefit of a wine description as it is being poured parsimoniously. The ingredient combinations for each of the four courses were quite safe & bland, & some of the textures not quite right. The meal was rescued a little by the chef’s additional extras which were more flavoursome than the main dishes. The environment & the ambience were very enjoyable, though the service became a little ragged as the night wore on. We used gift vouchers which made a partial contribution to the meal & (without going into detail) the handling of these was clumsy to say the least. Normally I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Peels but, on this experience & given the expense, I couldn’t currently do so. In short, I suggest that Peels needs to up its game, especially where the food is concerned.
The restaurant was not the right set up for a quick evening meal having just flown into the UK. It was clearly set up for a more formal occasion. The meal portions were also small.
Most enjoyable evening and delicious meal. Very welcoming on our arrival.The tasting menu and wines of our own choice were delicious. We also had 2 dessert wines that the sommelier recommended.
We have eaten in numerous Michelin starred restaurants and we would like to highlight a few things that would help maintain the Star at Peels.
The bottle of Gruner Veltiner wasn't cold and we had to ask for it to be cooled. It wasn't until the last glass that it was at its best temperature.
Not enough attention was paid to ensuring that our wine and water glasses were replenished on a regular basis.
We hope that these comments are seen in a positive light.
We will definitely be revisiting Peels in the future.
This was a real treat for us, but it was one of the most amazing dining experiences. The staff were polite, friendly and very knowledgeable. The food was fantastic, combining high quality ingredients in really imaginative ways.

Overall experience was very good. The food and restaurant are superb. The more relaxed and informal service was just right for the location.
- Finding the restaurant at 7pm on a dark November evening was ‘entertaining’.
- Minor point: at the end of the evening, the lady on reception merely handed my wife’s coat back to her. She didn’t offer to help with her coat, which would’ve been in tune with the rest of the service.
- Due to the acoustics of the room, you can hear the conversations on other tables.
- I’m rather disappointed it doesn’t offer Sunday lunch... missing a trick there, I think!
- it was my wife’s birthday and I’m sure I specified this on Opentable. No recognition of this whatsoever. Simpsons did the Sunday before. Rather disappointing.
Of the five Michelin starred restaurants in the area, I would put them fourth. I would happily go back, but Adam’s and Simpson’s are better and much more convenient for us.
The ambience, surroundings, service and food was very good. We had one of their 4 course meals and each course was excellent. In particular the Wagyu Beef was melt in the mouth. The beetroot starter was very pleasant and the crab and shrimps in mayonnaise was very good. The deserts were also of a very high standard.
The only food I that was disappointing was the nibbles with the pre-meal drinks, some sort of pickled beetroot affair that I found unpleasant - I would rather have had stuffed olives! But this is not reflected in my food review rating.
The only reason I gave my review 4 not 5 stars is I felt the accompanying wine pairings were very poor value. 3 of us had them at £50 each and for that we had 4 very small glasses of wine. Probably equating to 6 glasses of wine for £150. We could have had, and should've had, 2 or 3 bottles of wine for about the same money.
So whilst I recommend the restaurant I cannot recommend taking the wine pairings.
Excellent service and super staff made this stay special for us both. I would thoroughly recommend as a great place for special occasions. We also stopped overnight and the room was comfortable and well appointed. A walk in the gardens prior to dinner was also very pleasant.
Great food and a personal service from start to finish.
I booked Peels as it was a special birthday. We, all five of us, immensely enjoyed our evening! Everything from start to finish was of a very high standard. We most definitely will be back!
A lovely dining experience but disappointed when presented with the bill which had a service charge on it of approx 10%. I don't mind this if you are pre-warned or it's made clear on the menu beforehand. I didn't raise it with the staff at the time as I didn't want to spoil our special occasion.
A lovely evening dinner from arrival to departure. Attentive and helpful service, unhurried and just right. The food (tasting menu) was delicious, with many interesting little touches, including the canapes, the amuse bouche, the pre-dessert. Rock bass and grouse courses were outstanding. Very good and interesting wines in the flight to accompany the dishes. Lovely surroundings. Highly recommended.
We had an excellent meal in beautiful surroundings with under stated but attentive service.
Excellent food and nice ambience in the dining room. The pre meal routine with drinks and canapés in another room was a little strange, but it all worked out.

The service and presentation of the food was exceptional. All the little things that made our evening extra special. The great use of local produce and knowledge of the menu from the staff made the dishes come alive, real experience in a tastefully decorated historic setting.
Having eaten is some of the best restaurants in the world, I was amazed to find the perfect restaurant on my doorstep. Everything is perfect; from the beautiful venue with its history and modern touches, the brilliant welcome, relaxed, friendly and efficient, to the most delightful meal; not too heavy and an interesting wine list specialising in English wines. You could easily pay three times as much elsewhere. Please go, if you have not yet discovered Peel's.

Lovely ambience and food was tasty! We had the 7 course tasting menu and that filled us up very well. I love the starters i.e. tomato/elderflower jelly. It was so refreshing.
We have visited Peels on a previous special occasion, and as before, we were not disappointed. This time we went with friends, who were initially sceptical, but one mouthful of the first canapé and the personal and respectful service soon convinced them that this was going to be a memorable experience. " I think I am going to like it here!" This is not food for fuel, but food to be savoured slowly and experienced with ecstasy! We enjoyed the four course tasting menu and pushed the boat out with the wine flight but there is so much more than 4 courses! Luc our sommelier, was knowledgeable and friendly without being pompous. We were made to feel so special and welcomed as each course was delivered with care and no rush. We were the 2nd table to be seated in the dining room, and the last to leave! The price does mean we have to save for a special occasion, but as the General Manager pointed out to us, 'Eating at Peels is a defining moment, an experience to remember" Craig, we wholeheartedly agree!
We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves, Food was excellent, service exceptional, came for my mothers birthday, there were 5 of us, would definitely come again.
Prices are probably about right! The atmosphere was good and the restaurant created the right embience! Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. The staff were very pleasant and friendly.

Delicious well thought out food in a grand setting. The 7 course tasting menu was a gastronomic delight, with some of the courses looking too good to eat. Very pleased to have a restaurant of this quality on our doorstep.
A lovely place to have that special meal out or just to indulge you and your partner
The occasion was my wife's birthday. We had pre dinner drinks whilst scanning the menus and were slightly disappointed that we could not have the 4 course tasting menu and seven course separately as the seven course had to be for at least two people. That said we chose to have the seven course and thoroughly enjoyed it with the matching wines. The ambience in the room and the high level of service made the evening a great success.
The restaurant is situated in a nice country hotel. On arrival, we were led to the Parlour, an elegant high ceiling room. There is a nice selection of drinks. We were brought to our table after 45min, for which I felt it was slightly too long for pre-dinner drinks. The restaurant itself was spacious and romantic. We opted for the 3-course dinner. My wife had a veal starter, squab for main and a cheese course. I had crab, turbot and rhubarb dessert. The food was very tasty and well presented. The turbot was cooked to perfection, however, the squab was a bit too rare. Good service generally, particularly impressed by the waiter who explained the ingredients of the courses in details. Thanks to the petit four on a birthday plate from the house!
Excellent food in a lovely setting; pleasant staff waiting on and worth the 140mile round trip. Ideal for lunches and evening meals, as well as special occasions. The only critique I could give is that they were slightly slow on topping up empty water glasses and asking if another glass of wine was desired.
