Had the festive menu. Food lovely however we had table booked 18:15’and the soup was already off menu! Rest of food was tasty and well presented but the service was slow, waiting 50 mins for starters, annoying when they told us we only had the table for 2 hours! Waitress pleasant but not experienced. Didn’t offer to carry drinks from bar to table, lacked finesse.
No one to take our coats until we asked. Table too small for 5 had to ask for it to be reset. Side Vegetables cold. Some vegetables ordered never arrived. Long wait between courses. Delivery of food haphazard .. tended to be plonked down and we shuffle the table wine glasses etc. Turkey for the festive menu was from a pre formed roll. For price I would expect a roast crown. Complained and service removed and alcohol price halved. Staff apologetic. But not good. Will not go again.
The service was terrible. So bad that they offered us our desserts for free without being asked. We won’t be back and won’t recommend it.
We were thrown to find that lunch wasn't being served at 1330. Perhaps making this really clear at the booking stage would help? But the manager did get us a Christmas menu which was perfect... but only when we threatened to leave which was not perfect!
Great evening supper before joining the Caledonian Sleeper to Glasgow.
Very efficient, kind and thoughtful service.
Food was fresh and delicious.
Room was rather noisy to the point I had to shout for my partner to hear sat next to me.
This was due to some larger groups dining ( December 5th!!!)
Definitely going again for supper and the Sunday lunch is good value.
It was as always, a lovely overall experience. It is not innovative food, but is nicely done and the surroundings for a birthday just perfect. The rabbit ravioli were delicious and venison tender . The cod came is a delicious sauce and the puddings good with delicious dessert wines. Overall a delightful place to go for an occasion ...please keep it going at this standard.
In a beautiful renovation of a classic Railway Hotel the restaurant has a relaxed contemporary British ambience. The food is well prepared and presented.
Special occasion reflected in service. Always professional:)
We were predisposed to like Plum & Spilt Milk, but it was actually pretty bad.
Delicious bread came with good quality butter that unfortunately was borderline rancid.
We ordered glasses of Chardonnay to accompany our starter, and these arrived at room temperature - a minor thing, but we said we were disappointed that it wasn’t a bit cooler. Declining the suggested ice cubes, we were then offered replacements. Fair enough. These took quite a while to appear, during which time our starters sat in front of us. When we asked a more senior member of the waiting staff what was happening, she snapped back at us aggressively.
Eventually, cooler wine arrived and we tucked in. The starters were good. Not astonishing, but good.
As it was early December we both plumped for turkey from the £47 three course ‘festive menu’. Frankly, it was reminiscent of an average school dinner. The turkey was dry and overcooked. Everything else was adequate.
Because we were having the £47 set menu, we were told that if we didn’t have pudding we would be charged according to à la carte prices, which would work out quite a lot more expensive. So basically we were threatened with a financial penalty for not ordering pudding.
We objected, pointing out that the restaurant was forcing us to order food that we didn’t necessarily want, only to throw it away. This seemed utterly grotesque waste. This absurd argument whiled away five minutes.
It’s so nice to spend approaching £100 a head in a restaurant to be harangued, browbeaten and threatened with financial penalties, isn’t it?
In the end, however, we did order pudding, and this was a lot better than the main course. Not amazing, but OK.
We paid £177 for lunch for two. Food was about £100 of this.
This is a well-appointed restaurant in a great setting. But the food is at best catering college quality, only at low-end fine dining prices. The service is patchy, tending towards downright rude.
AVOID.
Sehr gutes Essen und guter Service, leider viel zu laut. Nicht geeignet für Geschäftsessen, aber toll für private Feiern.
Service was awful, had to wait 40 minutes for replacement meat as the beef was so tough.
Toilets were a disgrace, no toilet paper and the bins were overflowing. This place has gone completely downhill and I will never return.
The service and atmosphere were great. The food was delicious but lukewarm. My beef was actually cold, as was the plate.
It's a pity because I have been coming to Plum + Spilt Milk two or three times a year for at least the past four years & have, in the past, recommended it regularly. The standards of service remain high and the room remains lovely but the standard of cooking has really fallen. What we had was just average and the food felt like it was coming off a conveyor-belt. I don't know if the previous team have left but this used to be a really good place to eat and now it isn't. I am really sorry about this because I used very much look forward to eating there!
A very good restaurant, with a decent ambience, and excellent service. It's trendy with its Gothic black walls and (slightly mucky) marble tables, but the wine list is good and the staff are knowledgeable. I'd like to see more vegetarian choices on the menu, but otherwise, most enjoyable. If the broccoli soup is on the menu, get it! It's wonderful.
The restaurant had a good atmosphere and buzz. We were served drinks quickly and our order was taken in good time. We waited a while for the starters but the food was excellent overall. One observation is that the menus are too large and with unnecessarily thick covers - slim it all down to one sheet of paper! We would definitely return.
It was very nearly December, so there was the festive menu, which we didn't want, and no menu of the day, which was a shame because we've had that in the past. We both had crab tart, which was OK but not more; the pastry was a bit thick, the filling a little low. My cod was excellent, with a fantastic sauce, really really good. We didn't have dessert. The carafe of chardonnay we ordered was warm but when this was pointed out it was replaced straight away with another carafe which was (a little!) cooler. A nice place, and extremely convenient, with good service. Expensive, of course, but good.
The ambience is good - interesting bars and an open, elegant dining room with banquette seating. The service was friendly, helpful and efficient. There was nothing actually wrong with the food but it was rather disappointing and not particularly flavoursome. For the price it didn't seem good enough.
However, the location, right next to King's Cross station, is so convenient that I probably would book it again.
Great atmosphere, friendly staff delicious food great setting ... a super evening with friends ... a must place to eat
Table host was not friendly. She was not uniformed and shirt had a damp smell, which made us uncomfortable.
This is a very mixed review, I really liked our table it was enclosed and next to a window, hearing difficulties, so a must. I arrived on time and informed them my friends were running late. I was given water and then ignored. My friends arrived 20 mins later we were chatting and still, no one came till I waved at a member of staff. She then did not seem to understand our order of drinks and the fact that we would now only be three people. Sure enough, A while later another waitress who was fab came over and asked for our drinks order. We told her we had already ordered she was perplexed an apple juice arrived and then sometime later a glass of wine. We finally ordered. It was the Christmas menu. all courses were delicious.
BUT No sprouts and we had to ask for Roast potatoes.
A disappointing start as we had checked on the website that a lunchtime menu was available. However when we arrived we discovered that the restaurant was operating a Xmas menu only which was considerably more expensive. We opted for ‘ a la carte’ and the excellent quality of the food more than compensated for the website mistake.
The food was outstanding. Had vegetarian options for both starter and main. Nice ambience and a wonderful place to have a leisurely lunch before catching a train.
good choice of dishes on the menu. well presented food. portions were slightly on the small side but the food was all delicious. Generally good service but a bit slow in bringing the drinks all together and had to ask a few times for one of the drinks.
The restaurant decoration is very impressive and high quality. The service was very good and staff were helpful. We all enjoyed our food which was excellent quality and presented well. I wasn't quite sure that my starter (roasted beets etc) was entirely as described on the menu but it was very acceptable. The bar downstairs was very noisy and I wished I'd investigated upstairs as there was a small bar by the restaurant which we would have preferred if we'd know about it. All in all the experience was very enjoyable and I would recommend this restaurant to others.
Wonderful evening. Great food, great service and amazing ambience!
No great vegan or veggie choices but the meat eaters appreciated and enjoyed their food. I felt the food was overpriced for what it was. It is a beautiful little restaurant with a lovely ambience but other than the setting I was not that impressed.
Lovely venue. Good food. Poor menu. Service very pleasant and professional service but incredibly slow - they were under-resourced. Intolerable noise levels.
Food was ok but very over priced, the signature plum and spilt milk dessert was underwhelming and could have easily been something on the menu at a gastro pub.
Nice atmosphere and very good service. Dover sole was a bit bony though - but otherwise very good.
Good for quality lunch, but menu appears to have been the same for a long time? Could do with a refresh but service is ok
Good food and nice place.
Service very slow though...
Service wasn’t coordinated, multiple repeat checks. Food ok, Sunday roast not as good as previous. £2 extra charge for gravy which seemed greedy. Food temp mediocre.
Whilst a lovely atmosphere, the staff were friendly and the food was tasty. We felt very disappointed at the portion sizes for the brunch prices.
An evening with friends. Food and service was excellent. Thoroughly recommend
i have already recommended Plum and Spilt Milk to several friends.
My last visit was for brunch and I ordered too much. it was all delicious and I did not eat anything else for 24hours!
Lovely
Weve been before, but was again struck by the professional and friendly staff. The people at this restaurant are so well trained and made us feel so welcome.
Amazing restaurant! We had breakfast and it was gorgeous! We will definitely be back!
Great restaurant and bars, as a result booking again next week for another group of friends !
Have been to this restaurant several times and as always great food friendly staff and beautiful place
The service was extremely disappointing here. The waiting staff were verging on being rude. We were left for ages trying to make our order, and although we were there well before 11am, we did not get our order taken until after 11am therefore causing issues to order from the breakfast menu. We had people with dietary requirements who wanted to order from this menu.
The attitude from the waitress was shocking, and never came back to say that this was okay even though she made out that this was.
Shocking service overall, constantly ignored.
Food was okay - nothing special, considering the price.
