It is a smart, stylish place to enjoy dishes based on superb seasonal ingredients we source from the country’s most esteemed suppliers, for instance, smoked salmon from West Country sustainability champions Severn & Wye, plus Portland crab, Devon Rose veal, and venison from the Royal Estates. We support local producers when it comes to drinks too, serving Chapel Down English wines from Kent, and beers from London’s Meantime brewery.
I think management is changed (last time feb19) service and especially food very poor. I hope to be surprised next time because it was our favourite place.
Great ambience served in one of London’s best perches. Excellent value at lunchtime. Service is not rushed and food is quite good.
Everything was excellent! I keep going back for the great service, fantastic views and consistently delicious food.
If you want good view + afternoon tea , this is the right place for you.
Exceptionally well prepared food. Fresh and delicious tasting, especially the cold beetroot soup with shaved horseradish. All food very attractively presented. Portions not overly large but more than adequately sized. Beautiful view over the City tops.
We had a very good lunch for my husbands birthday. The food was excellent although we struggled with the menu choices and decided to have two starters as we found the main courses did not appeal. The desserts were delicious. It can be very noisy as the sound seems to carry but the view more than compensates. We have been several times before and would certainly go back.
Excellent food and the most professional attentive service from Valentina. Will definitely return.
Met a former work colleague/friend for lunch. Very nice food and ideal location.
We had lunch at this lovely restaurant on the upper floor of the National Portrait Gallery with a grand view of the London. (BTW, the gallery is truly worth a visit as each portrait has a story). Reservations are recommended, and we were glad we had made ours the day before our planned visit to the gallery. We both had the two course lunch special, with a red beet cold soup that was excellent and a lamb and lentil main course that was very satisfying.
Pre-theatre dinner with friends. Well priced menu and delicious food. Enjoyed by all.
This is a very busy restaurant. However this did not affect the quality of service. One small mishap was dealt with smoothly and quickly.
This is a restaurant that I will visit again. The view adds to the overall ambience of the restaurant.
Atmosphere overlooking the rooftops near Trafalgar Square was nice. The food and service is pretty mediocre though. Nice to do once but wouldn’t return.
The setting is fantastic, but the slowness of service let us down - took an hour from sitting down to getting our starter (which was a simple cold platter). Some dishes were excellent but the steak was not of the quality you’d expect for £32. Overall I’d go again if only for the view.
Stopped here for a pre-theatre set meal at 5:30pm / 6pm. Interesting view across the roof tops. Good service, but most importantly the food was superb. If you're in this part of London it's worth a visit.
Excelent place to go with partners even children are welcome. We liked the food and also the sights. Lovely place. One of my favorite regards from London
It was the first time I had taken my husband to your restaurant. Before I have always been with my girlfriends. He was very impressed with the view, service and, last but not least, the food. Thanks so much for the great experience.
We enjoyed the lunch experience, the service was just a bit shaky, two out of three wrong starters, delayed wine coming with the main meal and 1 dessert short!
Wonderful if you are headed to the gallery for a wander. Every table has a great view. The half lobster was fabulous. Excellent choices of wine by the glass.
Among the best service I have experienced in a restaurant.
Delicious food and lovely staff. However, prices have crept up, such that a 2 course lunch from the set menu with water, one coffee and no wine was over £80. Too much at lunchtime.
I had some problems with the booking. When I called to advise we were reaching late the lady on the phone re-booked the appointment saying that she did not see any reservation on OpenTable. On the moment we arrived at the restaurant, on the other hand, the restaurant manager denied any of such conversation.
Entrance lift from the Gallery was broken, so we had to pass by a back-door, the guard was a bit rude with my wife and our guest.
The main course arrive around 30minutes after the order.
Overall good but I don't think I would come again.
The food is pretty good, with the tartar very nicely spiced. The lobster is not large or exciting enough to warrant the price. The tables in the last row have a pretty limited view. If you take one of the later dining times, chances are a table by the windows will free up, and once you move to it then you can enjoy the sunset over the rooftops in all its stunning glory. The service was top notch, especially our waitress Monika was fantastic and made this a memorable evening!
This is one of the best views in London and such brilliant service with delicious food.
They were rude. Didn’t have seem to have our booking. Would not recommend.
We were particularly happy with the attention to detail given by all your staff.
it was a most enjoyable dining experience
We’ve had good experiences at The Portrait for lunch previously and on this occasion brunch. It’s a great place and we hope to try it for dinner.
The food was excellent, service very good albeit a little slow on a quiet Saturday but we were not in a hurry. Our experience and that of other diners was somewhat spoilt by the next table Skyping or face timing at full volume to the extent I couldn’t hear my fellow diner sitting across from me.
Fabulous setting for a pre-theatre meal with great views, food and service. Until the next time !
The staff and service here are great. The food is reliably good but regrettably a somewhat unchanging menu. Why can't there be a menu of the day, or at the very least a frequently changed menu!
Excellent location and views. The pre-theatre menu offers good value and the food was excellent although not particularly sophisticated. The service could have been better as the staff seemed distracted, chatting to each other and there was perhaps too much banter behind the bar. Still would come back for a work event or special occasion
A perfect place to celebrate our anniversary and close out our visit to England.
We came for a team dinner and really enjoyed ourselves. The food really was outstanding and the ambiance was lovely - quiet, which suited our group and made a pleasant change to some of the restaurants in Central London.
This is one of my favourite restaurants in London. I recommend it to all my friends and will keep going back for the great service and wonderful food. The views are superb as well, simply a perfect dining experience.
Food did not match the location tasteless liver messy veg in soup like gravy good asparagus
Brilliant setting, light and airy. Great ambience. Thoughtful food well prepared and presented. Excellent wine list.
we had a wonderful day at the gallery topped off with an excellent lunch at a window table.
Well catered for with Gluten Free options. Service was excellent my chicken was excellent but the Sea Bream wasn’t so fantastic just served with crushed new potatoes it was rather dull. Crumble was awful a mass of nuts and muesli and barely any rhubarb. Starters were the best things on the set menu.
Always a pleasure to dine overlooking the rooftops of Trafalgar Square, though prices seem to rising more than elsewhere so its in danger of pricing itself out of the set lunch market
Gorgeous view and absolutely lovely staff (thank you, Ruhan) who make you feel special.
Have just met a dear friend for a long and leisurely lunch at the Portrait Restaurant at the National Portrait Gallery. Am pinching myself having found the perfect restaurant, that nobody seems to know about! Incredible location, gorgeous view across the rooftops toward Lord Nelson and Big Ben in the distance. However, even more impressive is the food! Gin and Tonics followed by delicious ribeye steaks and chips, and rhubarb crumble.
Will definitely return, probably before April is out! My new favourite restaurant for meeting up with old friends. It really is worth the visit.
Wonderful lunch venue. Good buzzy atmosphere, delicious food, top service. I love restaurants where everyone is chatting - sure sign that they feel at ease - and the Portrait is a perfect example. Will be back next time we’re in London.
