Among the ruins of ancient Greece were items such as clay pots that revealed many clues to daily Hellenic life. PYLOS (pronounced Pee-'los) - the root word that includes things of clay - celebrates these prosaic artifacts we now recognize as great art.
The food was good but service was average. I was not asked if I wanted to pack my food. We literally had 40% of food left, which was a disappointment. The quality of service should also match the price point.
Exquisite and service was perfect.
Loved everything about Pylos! The food, the atmosphere, the service!!!
Excellent Greek near Tompkins Square Park
Loved everything about the meal and evening at Pylos. Definitely going again!
Pylos always delivers. Good food and wine. Friendly service.
Love the food here. Very generous portions.
Wonderful as it's been for the twelve years we've been going there!
A hidden gem! The good and the service was great! We stumbled upon this place a year ago and came back recently to celebrate my husband's birthday and they never disappoint, we plan on coming here more often to try every single item on the menu!
Everything was perfect
One thing... We had galatobureko as dessert, it was good but too much honey on the plate... a bit less honey would be better
Love this restaurant and everyone working there was wonderful. Was disappointed by the food. May just have been a bad night.
With a party of five we we're able to enjoy a family style gathering. The calamari was the most tender and best quality I tasted in a long time. You can not go wrong with the lamb chops. Add in great service and you have a wonderful experience.
Definitely try this restaurant, it's amazing. The food is delicious, the service really good and the helpings are huge, big enough to share or take home for leftovers. The octopus was perfectly done and my daughter raved about her lamb chops. Both were tasty, well cooked and beautifully presented. Our waiter was wonderful as were the other helpers. For starters the dips are so good as was the Greek salad. Will definitely be back
I’ve been dining at Pylos for years, but I must say the food was particularly exceptional, as was the service.
Delicious food and service. We were there on a Sunday evening in summer. Our friends commented on how quiet and relaxed the restaurant was, which was unusual as on other occasions this restaurant has been full and on the noisier side. We shared the signature dish of grilled octopus and horiatiki salad as appetizers. The grilled whole fish was done perfectly, pastitsio and shrimp and sea scallops were also throughly enjoyed. I'm not a fan of the credit card hold for the reservation, but understand the need to use one. They serve only beer and wine.
Prices were outrageous so I would not recommend going there.
Excellent food and service, very quiet for lunch on a Friday
Pylos used to be very good ... years ago. Their menu is still the same and it wasn't as good as I remember.
We loved the octopus and the mousaka but the octopus in my opinion was little dry. The bass we ordered was over cooked and fishy. The lamb chops were good but the shank was disappointing especially for the price. Apps are better than dinner. Overall it’s a good place but returning to what we remember as one of our favorite place in the city, the quality might have changed a bit.
If someone takes the time and energy to give 5 stars why would you impose a word count?
Delicious Greek food in a lovely setting. Pylos is one of my favorite go-to restaurants.
Delicious food as always
Pylos has been our go-to restaurant for many years. It never fails. We are of Greek decent and eat as healthy a diet as possible. At Pylos, the menu provides for everyone's taste and every dish is really good, even unique for Greek food. The Chef has immpeccable taste as does the owner, obviously, and that the staff is so well trained and at the same time not stuffy. It is no wonder Pylos has long sustained its primary patronage and gone on to become a favorite for sophisticate food lovers, New Yorkers, travellers, and holidays events. Good wine. Wonderful appetizers, great portion sizes, gorgeous setting, flowers, lighting. We treasure our dinners at Pylos.
My boyfriend and I are both vegetarian so we were a bit limited in our options since much of the entrees are meat or fish. We got: artichoke moussaka - very good, delicious bechemel sauce; horiatiki greek salad - very good, excellently seasoned; spanakorizo - my favorite by far and perfectly cooked spinach rice lemon pilaf. The only thing I would not recommend is the piperia red pepper with spicy feta, there was too much cheese and too spicy and cold. Highly recommend this place!
I won't go as far as to say it was awful, but it definitely wasn't wonderful. We were squeezed into a tiny corner where we sweltered because the a/c was on the fritz. The food selection was a bit disappointing but the actual taste was even more so. Bland, uninteresting, small portions. We were never offered additional pita bread even though we ordered dips. It was a shame to waste a dinner when there are so many superior choices.
Food was solid if not exceptional. Service was good. The ambience was the best part.
Food was only okay for the price. Also, the waiter didn’t notify us that the grilled fish would take a very long time to cook and be served. We waited for 45 minutes after finishing our appetizers at which point we were no longer hungry and tired of waiting. The kitchen and waitstaff should manage expectations and let people know if there is a long prep/cook time.
Apart from that the service was good and ambiance nice.
Our table was near the door. Not great.
I love this place and haven’t been for years as I moved from the neighborhood. Needed to take my boyfriend there as I knew he would appreciate the food. We both loved everything that we ordered and so thrilled to be able to get a last minute reservation on a Saturday even though 5:30 was the only option!
Pylos is one of the best restaurants we’ve been to. Much thought and care was given to the dishes and their presentation. Loved the bean spread brought out with warm pita as well as the red wine. We ordered the salmon and striped bass. Both dishes were wonderfully fresh and generously portioned. We will return!
Loved everything about this restaurant. The calamari and octopus were really good for apps. Our table ordered the sea bass (whoa), lamb chops, moussaka (sp?), and the steak. All were very good but I would pass on the steak next time and try a different fish entree. Waitress was good too and explained all the different Greek wines and beers. Also, the menu prices on opentable are wrong and are about 20% less than the real prices at the restaurant (ex. Steak is $38 not $30). Check Pylos’ website instead.
Love Pylos! As always, amazing service and food. The ambiance is also great, you can have a date here, dinner with girlfriends or even bring your parents. One of my favorite restaurants in the city, will be back!
I've now been to Pylos three times. It is a wonderful venue. The food is delicious and it's a great place to come with a bunch of friends. The staff is helpful and efficient - not overbearing. I will definitely come back.
Uno dei migliori ristoranti di manhattan. Se volete apprezzare la cultura culinaria greca questo posto fa al caso vastro. Complimenti allo shef!!!
Coming from a half-Greek: this is the best Greek food I've had in the city.
Excellent Greek restaurant in the East Village. Our meals were fabulous. It is pricey but worth it.
As a Greek Cypriot, living in London, I was keen to try some Greek cuisine in New York. Pylos came highly recommended from a colleague and I have been thanking her ever since. The food was delicious and portions were healthy (i.e. on the large side). Alexandra was great - she helped me with the menu and was interested to chat (I was a sole diner, as I was on a business trip). The restaurant was quiet for lunch on a Saturday, but that was the only downside. I cannot wait to visit again! Good value, great food and impeccable service. Everything was perfect.
The food is so well and knowingly prepared everything crisp (that’s supposed to be crisp); and savory to the right degree. Pylos is a serene, lovely and spacious place, and the wait staff is kind and attentive. All I wish it might add is those coffee frappes in summer, like on the Greek islands (though I suppose that might clash with the elegant vibe.)
Always excellent. The food, the service, all around. I have been going there for years and it has never let me down. And, the people I was with feel exactly the same
The moment we entered the restaurant we were taken from the dark, wet streets of the city to the smells, sounds and decor of a Greek Island taverna! The clay pots hanging from the ceiling and the delicious white wine from Santorini kicked off an evening of delicious appetizers and gorgeously presented main courses!
Kudos to Pylos for being a tiny giant among the many great Greek restaurants in the city.
