1423 China Kitchen
Our Grade 2 listed building, believed to be the second oldest in Windsor, dates all the way back to 1423. Centuries of clutter and old decoration was stripped away to reveal many original features including a very rare Dragon Beam, thought to be one of only ten still existing in England.
Using only the very best local produce along with many seasonings, spices and other fresh ingredients imported directly from Szechuan. We are also pleased to offer a very comprehensive menu for both vegetarians and vegans.
The restaurant is set over three floors enabling us to comfortably cater for up to 90 guests. As such it is ideal for providing separate spaces for individual large family get-togethers, parties or even corporate functions.

I booked a table of 2 for a special birthday treat and especially requested for upstairs seating. Upon arrival we were told upstairs were closed and we were seated next to the cash register. In the next hour or so the takeaway delivery drivers were in and out right next to our table. I understand that on a Monday night it is probably not so busy so they have closed the upstairs but then they let a whole family to dine upstairs literally few minutes after they refused us for the same request. I can’t say it was a pleasant experience but the food was better than every other Chinese restaurant that are in the similar vicinity. Food is a little bit pricy but considering it’s Windsor and we didn’t wanna go to an all you can eat Chinese restaurant, it was satisfactory food wise. Service was fair apart from the seating option.
Beautiful food. Incredible location. Fantastic service ... a little on the slow side when busy but nothing to moan over. Defintly recommend the sweet and sour chicken
Very attentive staff and the food was fantastic as always
Food was lovely and fresh. Two of us had the set menu, plenty of food and very tasty.
This is our 4th visit and we enjoyed everything about it, This time we were granted our request to be seated upstairs, what a big difference, totally made the night much enjoyable, as Is a totally better experience and atmosphere, and more spacious, food and service was excellent, we sat upstairs the 1st time and knew from that night we would definitely return as the 2 previous occasions we were put off as it is too smaller downstairs and a lot of interruptions such as front door keep opening and bins being brought passed you as eating and also being sat next to kitchen door where food comes out. If we are lucky to be sat upstairs again we will definitely return. Thankyou China Kitchen for an lovely evening.
We have been to 1423 China Kitchen a couple of times and have felt the same both times - it is lovely food, and the authentic dishes in particular are a real treat - but it is over-priced by about £5 a dish. Having one chicken dish cost £18 is really over-the-top, even in Windsor. Sadly that means we can't come as often as we would like. Sitting downstairs is also not ideal as there is lots of takeaway traffic and people stand around the tables while waiting - it isn't a great ambience in such a tiny space. Overall I would say great food, but overpriced.
Super tasty and beautiful place
Amazing food, and very amiable, warm service. Really extensive menu, and everything tried was exemplary. Well worth coming to again and again, to try everything! Food was on a level with the finest Chinese restaurants in San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York or London. Place has a cozy, rustic feel - all very clean and comfortable!!
Food is excellent quality but the dining experience is very poor, sitting downstairs there is a constant noise from the fan in the kitchen and an endless stream of Deliveroo people coming in to collect orders. It makes it impossible to have a decent, relaxing evening talking as you can’t hear each other over the noise. If you go to the restaurant, request a seat upstairs.
Very poor service, food passable.
Would not be returning or recomm ding anyone, poor service , cold dark restaurant.. staff couldn’t be bothered to even speak was an effort
This was our second visit. Whilst the food was good it is quite pricey. We made the mistake of sitting downstairs this time which is a bit cramped and was busy processing takeaway orders. Unlike previously, service lacked charm and they made a mistake with our order. This was apologised for and the extra dish arrived promptly. The waiter had taken our order whilst doing other things which was a bit distracting. Decent bottle of Shiraz Viognier. I am rather tall so the intricate carved brackets on the table legs didn't give me enough space to be comfortable.. The place was full on the Saturday evening we visited so food delivery slowed down somewhat.
This was our 3rd visit as food is amazing. We normally dine late and request a table upstairs, The first time we dinned at 1423 China Kitchen this was the best experience, Great Service, Delicious food and to make this a more enjoyable experience our request for a table upstairs was no problem at all by the manager, therefore we decided we would definitely be returning as this was one of our best Chinese meals we have had with such a lovely setting. However the 2nd visit in December, although we requested same time for table upstairs we were turned down , told they were cleaning upstairs! Even though we saw customers leave as we nearly completed our meal that were dining upstairs. We witnessed eating downstairs bin bags passing us through the restaurant, front door left open so we kept getting cold! The staff kept coming in and out of the door which kept banging which was right next to my seat, also they started cashing up and staff were very noisy, and it was all a bit much, This ruined the night and the atmosphere, we thought maybe it was a one off! Oh no last night was exactly the same as again refused to dine upstairs! And still a couple came down from upstairs. It is not nice having rubish bags passing you whilst eating and having the door left open with the cold coming in! This is totally unacceptable! We will not be dining there again if we have to experience this again! Such a shame this is the best Chinese food we have tasted in Windsor. This Is very disappointing!
Soft shell crab fab. Kung po king prawns soft and delicious, Pekingese duck tasty Quirky setting. Tim our waiter very engaging. Not a cheap night out but the best Chinese locally.
I know this place gets great reviews but for me it is so over priced £13.95 for cabbage because they had no pak Choi. The prawns were lovely, but in a gloopy sauce. Good Singapore noodles. Maybe Thursday eves are just not great. Such a shame.
This is probably the best Chinese in Windsor at the moment. The food was very good and offered an excellent range of choices. The Dim Sum with Chicken was very good as was the Sesame Prawn toast. My main of Lamb with Cumin seeds was quite spicy but delicious. My wife had a spicy shell on prawn dish(a finger bowl or moist napkin would have been nice) .Initially service was bit lumpy ( a temp ?) who didn't grasp that I was ordering a bottle of wine rather than just drinks. A more experienced waiter took over and he was very good. Pricing for the food and wine was on the pricey side. However costs are noticeably cheaper if you order on line
1423China Kitchen coped with our party of 9 beautifully. The service was excellent and the food delicious. The boys enjoyed the local beer with their meal. We had a whole aromatic duck to share. Wonderful. Thank you for making our evening fun and memorable.
Fabulous ancient building and very attentive staff and delicioud food. Good value
Excellent attentive service. Wonderful fresh flavours. Great quality.
We had a lovely meal at 1423, the food was outstanding and lots to chose from. The staff were very kind and helpful, we didn't have to wait long for food at all. Overall we really enjoyed the restaurant and would definitely recommend.
This is a great restaurant in a really lovely location, highly recommended!
Best Chinese we've had. Lovely restaurant and were locked after very well.will definatley return
We have been to this restaurant before, and we enjoyed our last experience - hence we returned. But tonight the service was much slower, and the food quality was not as good as our first experience.
However when we complained, the manager did apologise and gave us a discount. This was good customer care - so we will likely return if we are in Windsor again in the future.
I booked the 3 course lunch as advertised. Three courses for £15.95. Turned up 5 minutes early and was told that the restaurant was fully booked. We would have to sit upstairs for half an hour and then would be shown our table. During the wait we were then told that they would not honour the "three course lunch", despite having it in writing and we would have to pay full price instead. Obviously we got up and left at that point. Don't waste your time going here as there are plenty of other restaurants in Windsor to choose from.
We both enjoyed the meal very much, the service was very good and our waitress was attentive and friendly, although it would have been nice to understand just how many people the dish I ordered served, thankfully it was delicious and they packed a doggy bag for me. We sat inside in the end and I would advise against trying to sit outside as the tables and chairs are on cobblestones on a 15 degree hill which could be a bit hairy after a glass or two of wine. We will definitely go again as there are many dishes I would like to try. I would recommend to anyone who is tired of the usual Chinese fayre.
Not really worth the price. Quite overpriced probably because of location
Amazing restaurant as per usual with fantastic authentic food and lovely staff. Eat here if you want a truly authentic taste of China.
Amazing authentic Chinese food. Having lived in china previously, it's amazing to see a truly authentic Chinese food experience on offer in Windsor.
Very nice dining experience in a lovely setting
Beautiful sunny day in Windsor with family grandparents and grandchildren - located in a perfect spot in Windsor - very accommodating staff - great food and outdoor dining experience - will go again
Lovely food and great service, the only downside was the price.very expensive
Lovely restaurant and staff was very accommodating, especially since we had a small infant in the party.
There are many authentic Chinese dishes on the menu, along with some of the more popular dishes that we choose in the UK. We really enjoyed the mixed seafood starter platter - the wasabi prawns were amazing. Our friends chose the more usual starter platter (chicken satay, ribs, seaweed) but this was met with mixed reaction. The owner of the restaurant is great - she takes time to talk to her guests and is happy to talk about some of then more unusual dishes and explain their origins. We chose half a duck with pancakes between four of us and there was ample and the owner shreds the duck at the table, which is a nice touch. To be honest, after the starters and duck, we should have reduced the amount of main courses we ordered as it was no time before we were all full. Of the main courses, two we really enjoyed, two less so. Great noodles and rice. This is a slightly unusual restaurant and not as polished as some but if you are ready for that and choose wisely, it's a very enjoyable experience. If you get a table downstairs beware it can be quite chilly as the front door opens into the restaurant and lets a draught in.
First visit to 1423 and as locals we had heard a lot about the place! The food certainly lived up to expectation and the service was fantastic. Intimate, authentic, delicious- you need to try it!
Great meal! Very tasty food. Will keep going back for more!
Lovely food....only drawback was rather pushy waiters on trying to get you to order
Very good! They were a bit busy but the food was nice, decor was very nice. Would recommend to anyone!
Food amazing but if it is suggested you order a veg side dish be very careful. ( we didn't ask cost first after all it was only vegetables!!)4 pieces of pak choi and 4 oyster mushrooms, although very nice, was £16.90. More than some of the main dishes!!
