44 Hill Street
We offer seasonal menus for you to share with friends and family, from a causal lunch to sharing plates to a full dining experience – you can enjoy it all with wine, beer, cocktails or bubbles!
The history of this building has ranged from a bonded warehouse to a butter merchants and now we bring you Forty-Four. The history of this vibrant restaurant is evident in the industrialised interior, from the exposed brick work to the metal beams dating back to the last century.
The food was really lovely and a great selection on offer. We ordered 3 tapas and a large sharing board. The only complaint is that the tapas portions are very small. I understand tapas generally is quite small however 2 prawn skewers isn’t great. Despite this everything was really lovely and I would go back.
We dine out two to three nights a week and I rarely post a bad review but the service was sub standard, from the minute we walked through the door, the food was distinctly average ( apart from the vegan burger which raises it to a 2 star review rather than a 1 star ) . It's also overpriced .. fish if the day was seabream at £19 which would be fine if the food was up to standard but its definitely not and 1 hour between starter and main course . we seen several unhappy customers complaining, tension between staff and a row between front of house and kitchen. Not a good experience at all. If you fancy a good vegan burger then it's fine but we wouldn't eat there again
Food was ok. Venison steak was overdone. Lamb wasn't tender in the lamb tagine. Service was actually awful, no one asked how the food was. Starter board was sitting there for at least 30 minutes before it was taken away. Mains took a very long time, with no apology. No one came to clear our mains. We actually really wanted dessert, but they took so long to come to us, we just paid and left, no one really realised either. The place wasn't even that busy. Very disappointing.
Not good value for money. Food not enjoyable. Spoke to manager won’t be back
Excellent choice of dishes on the menu. Food was delicious and service was great
This was our 2nd visit unfortunately the wait for service was unacceptable (it was not full) the food came out at the same time which meant when we sent our main courses back they arrived over cooked as they had been sat under the grill. Once the fresh food arrived we were very happy with the food. The 90 minutes allocated turned into a 130 minute visit. That being said the first visit was outstanding hence why we returned.
We went here to celebrate my girlfriend’s birthday as we had dinner there the year before and loved it. The service and atmosphere were great. The starters were good, the desserts were very delicious, however the ribeye steaks we ordered as our mains were quite underwhelming - especially at that price.
Fabulous as always
Such lovely staff and tasty food! Came for my birthday and loved it.
We had the tapas and prawn bruschetta. The tapas were fine but the bruschetta was tasteless and the bread very soggy. When I told the manager he said other people liked it. That was that. I was disappointed with the food Snd the response.
Excellent food , great service really good value for money
Will be back !!
Excellent food. Very good wine list and very friendly staff. Will be back.
Great to see a menu with more than one choice for vegans/vegetarians
Best restaurant in N.I !!! Great food -staff -ambience
Booked online last minute was greeted by friendly staff , plently of choice on the meu with delicious food .
I look forward to my next visit to belfast as I will be returning again .
The restaurant was recommended to us to try while in Belfast however it didn’t live up to the expectations. The restaurant had too many people and a serious lack of staff that didn’t know how to handle the pressure. Waited for an age to get served and had to ask repeated times could we order a drink. Service was very slow and the food was average. The food and restaurant served a purpose for the evening but unfortunately wouldn’t be rushing back anytime soon.
Unfortunately our meal wasn’t a great experience. There were far too many people in the restaurant and the kitchen couldn’t handle the orders. Our food was very poor quality, even the roast vegetables consisted of a few sad looking burnt onions and one little burnt carrot! Our steaks were burnt, the fish was tasteless and the tapas wasn’t nice either. Would never return! Total waste of money and very disappointing.
Very friendly efficient staff and extremely helpful, will definitely recommend and will be back.
Pre theatre meal on a Saturday evening and just in time to enjoy the steak, fries and salad deal. Steak was small but tasty. Both were ordered as medium but one came out rare which they sorted quickly. Crème brûlée was delicious but sticky toffee pudding was thin and a bit stodgy. Would definitely go back but order off the main menu - platters looked good.
Service very slow. Staff trying their best but wasn’t enough of them. First course out before drinks came. Long wait for that.
Food was mostly nice but I've had much better tapas, squid didn't seem too fresh. 5 tapas for £16 between 2 people seemed good value but they were very small and needed chips and bread to bulk it up. Staff very nice though and overall a pleasant experience in central location.
Waitress was lovely, starter was fine but main course was v disappointing
I never leave reviews, but I was really disappointed with 44 Hill Street. Service was very poor - waited for 20 minutes before we were offered a drink, and even then had to get up and ask someone to come and take our order. No acknowledgement or apology. Waited another 15 minutes for our starter to be taken away. Ordered two bottles of wine, one of which was cork-sealed - the waitress left it on the table without opening it! Got up, asked her to come and open it, and she said she'd ask someone to come over. 10 minutes later no one had arrived so had to carry it up to the bar myself and ask the bartender to open it. Again, no acknowledgement or apology. Food was very mediocre - the veggie pasta was overcooked and flavourless and the vegan burger was undercooked, mushy and tasteless in the middle and burnt and tough on the outside. Won't be back.
A long wait for nothing
Poor service. Table booked at 8:15 weren't getting served until 21:45
Lovely restaurant, staff very attentive but not overly fussy, food very delicious with good portion sizes, very enjoyable
Thought the restaurant was quiet for a Friday night in city centre. Staff were friendly, and attentive. Baked Camembert was disappointing as it was over baked and was too runny. Main meal was very tasty, the sticky toffee pudding was cold and dense. But overall a nice experience.
Couldn’t fault this meal. Lots of choices of tapas to start, including veggie options. Nice selection of desserts and wine. Good service, buzzing atmosphere.
Overall the surroundings of this restaurant are very pleasant. We waited 40mins for our initial drinks to arrive and there were issues with the meal. The quality was, we felt, average and items were missing from our plates! When we addressed it with the manager, yes he refunded the drinks but overall was not very apologetic and seemed to place blame with our waitress, who we felt was actually doing her best..
Great buzz. Good food and good value. Courteous, attentive staff.
Food wasn't very good. Ordered some tapas, fries and sourdough with tapenade. The tapas arrived out a good few mins ahead of the others, and we were about 70% of the way through our food before our drinks arrived. The parmesan fries were pretty poor and overcooked. Staff were very good about it and deducted them from the bill when we pointed it out. Drinks were nice, bread and tapenade was good, but I'd give the rest a miss.
We were a bit disappointed by 44 Hill Street. The food was pretty average - we were a party of vegans and the menu looked great with plenty of choice. But none of the dishes were particularly stand-out on taste, in fact they were pretty bland. There are plenty of restaurants in Belfast serving much tastier vegan food.
The biggest problem was that two of our party of five were brought their main courses, and then the other three waited 20 minutes, in vain, for some food. None of the staff came anywhere near our table to check we were okay, and it was impossible to catch their attention. Eventually we flagged down our waiter, who discovered that we'd been sent another table's two veggie burgers instead (looked like they were waiting in confusion to eat too!). Ten minutes later we finally got our remaining three dinners – long after our first two diners had finished.
To be fair to our waiter, he was extremely apologetic and took our drinks off our bill - but we weren't drinking heavily (a couple in our party were driving).
On a positive note, the vegan chocolate cake for dessert was excellent!
On balance, we wouldn't go back again.
I’m afraid our food on Saturday wasn’t very good .. food was Very overcooked and salads terribly plated , Just looked thrown together.
We were in quite a rush as heading to the theatre so we didn’t complain at the time .
Service was excellent though and served by a lovely new waiter on his first shift (another reason for not wishing to complain)
Worth a visit. The food is good and staff are friendly.
I was however disappointed to have to wait 45 mins for our table, despite booking and confirming the booking. Whilst waiting there was nowhere for my group to go, so we stood at the door. I would have expected an offer of a drink or slight reduction from the bill. Neither was offered.
Loved the decor and ambiance of the restaurant. The food however was disappointing, my food was lovely but I was the only one in our group of four who could say they really enjoyed their food, everyone else’s was unfortunately just ok. I would return in future, in the hope of a nicer meal to make the whole experience better.
We went for tapas and a cheese platter. Food outstanding and the service was excellent.
Can’t wait to return.
Waited 1 hour 30 for starters, another 30-40 for mains with no explanation. Starters were incomplete with elements missing and one of our party became ill the next day from eating here.
It was our first night in Belfast and we wanted something light. The food and service were good.
This is becoming one of our favourite places - thank you for a very enjoyable meal with our family from USA
