Just an average place with moderate food. Nothing special about this place at all.
Good food & great service.
Excellent food, service, drinks, and atmosphere! Perfect for a date night or any occasion honestly. The front of house staff is attentive and very accommodating, while the kitchen knows what they’re doing as well!
We have dined, often celebrated, here for 20 years. Sadly, this was not the same restaurant we have loved. First, the menu has gone from being upscale bistro to brew pub middling. Hamburgers and fried chicken 😩. All the same stuff you can get every other place on the Square. Where is the lovely pork loin or the lamb 3 ways? The prix fixe dinner was a disappointment. Out of the appetizer so we were served a substitute. Okay. The lentil and beet salad was overdressed and the beets were impossible to see or taste. The lamb risotto was tasty, but the lamb was a little dry. Portions were good. Service was mixed. We had to ask 3 times for water, but after that the waiter was attentive. Although it’s a tiny thing, the signature colbalt blue water glasses were no where to be found. Lost a lot of class with that decision. Will we return? Not sure...
It’s hard to rate a restaurant during Covid. Food was ok. The waitress spilled a drink on one of us getting us wet and they didn’t even offer to give us a complimentary one. The bathroom was absolutely dirty and not acceptable. Appetizers were over priced.
staff was attentive and beautiful location. lots of seating to choose from.
They were happy, helpful and eager to serve it with changes. I appreciated that
As always, the food was exceptional. The steak was perfectly grilled. Excellent wine selections.
Overall the experience was very pleasant. My short ribs were less than expected. It was a bit dry and fatty. Everything else was great.
Great food, varied and eclectic menu. Service off just a bit as server is in training. Other team members jumped in to help.
Very nice team with a positive attitude!
My experience here was a little disappointing. I chose this restaurant for the Roasted Mushroom gnocchi, which looked amazing from the pictures I saw posted online. A few minutes after ordering I was informed they were out of mushrooms and I would be getting mushroom-less gnocchi. It ended up tasting okay but it wasn't really what I wanted. My girlfriend got the pork risotto and she enjoyed it. The service was alright and everything else about the restaurant was also fine. The only other complaint I have is the billing. They have a little note on the menu that they charge an extra 10% service charge to supplement the servers wages. Which is whatever on it's own, but the food here is not cheap and I'm pretty sure I ended up over-paying considerably.
We were shocked and disappointed. It'd been very nice in the past.
When we arrived at 7PM, the restaurant was nearly deserted and the menu had changed.
We left before being served. Chose to eat down the street at Farmer's Union.
When we finished dinner ~ 8PM, we walked past 71 St Peter and found it closed!
We have been going to 71 St. Peter for many years. We had our wedding reception there, and it has been a standby for us. After a hiatus of several months we went there again last night and were deeply disappointed in what is a precipitous decline in just about everything in the restaurant.
First off, the menu has been cut to the bone. There were only four serious entres, tilapia, chicken, steak and pork, and served in the most bare-bones fashion with just a hint of accompaniments. A wagyu burger ordered medium rare was as thin as a McDonald's patty and was served medium-well at an exorbitant price for what appeared on the plate with some potato chips. There were some pasta dishes, and a few items on the appetizer menu that seemed to be a cut above TGIFridays. The servers were extremely pleasant, but the service was sub-par. There was a long wait for food. When we asked for bread, again a long wait, and then a few haphazard slices of French bread served on a small plate, but no butter, which we had to ask for separately. We had an absolutely terrible creme brulee made with milk rather than cream. It was an insipid custard that had some caramelized sugar on top. There was only one other dessert--a chocolate cake. There were only four red wines by the glass, no cabernet or zinfandel (in California!). My dinner guest noted that the wine selections by the glass were better in a Chinese restaurant we ate at recently.
The California minimum wage law seems to have scared the restaurant. A 10% service surcharge was added to the bill (which we absolutely don't mind paying), with a suggested tip of 8-10% bringing the tip up to the level we would normally offer. In short we were very, very sad at the steep decline of this once-wonderful restaurant. They once offered fine dining at excellent prices, but this incarnation hovers around Appleby's at a higher price. We are sad to see it go, but we don't see how we can patronize this restaurant any longer.
Unfortunately the heater wasn't working on a cold day.
Chose 71 Saint Peter after looking at online menu and selecting our meals. The final bill arrived and for each item they charged more than the online menu promised. Not very nice.
Heater in the restaurant was not working. We had to eat in the bar and sit under a heater,
Service by Andrew was superb!
I was staying at the Fairmont in downtown San Jose, and it is an easy walk. Nice variety on the menu. Well-prepared dishes, nicely presented, reasonable prices. Relaxing atmosphere and good service. Will return. Strange that it does not show up in Yelp listings?
Limited food choices.
Pork loin was dry
Wat staff were not very attentive
Enjoyed a great meal at 71 St. Peter. Sat outside and totally enjoyed the vibe. Food was delicious! Service was AMAZING! Our server, Saskia (sp?), knew her menu, made great suggestions, attentive (not smothering), and a joy to talk to! Definitely 5 stars!
Will be back for sure! Highly recommended!
Ok experience but you can tell entree was reheated in microwave. Likely would not return. Sad, this place has been a main staple in sj for a long time.
Awesome menu and ambiance. I would only add more options for desserts.
Had a great date night in this quiet spot. Went for 6:30 reservations and started with delicious drinks as well as mussels. Fresh ingredients in everything. Had low carb options which my husband loved - burger on top of charred romaine and I got the delightful mushroom gnocchi. Including picture and we will definitely be back. In great San Pedro Market area so walked around and had another drink at bar around corner after. LOVED the decor and ambience.
I usually find great food and wine here but this time the spaghetti carbonara and creme brulee were major disappointments. The former tasted stale, the latter almost bready. No worries, the waiter comped me.
Made my reservation for 9:30, I got there at 9:30, they informed me that they closed early because it "was slow". I made a reservation. Honor it.
Food was okay. Could’ve been worse but definitely had higher expectations going in.
the mussels were delicious, and my glass of rose was great. Sitting on the patio on a warm summer night was lovely. I ordered the tilapia which was yummy. We were one of two tables in the whole place!
The service was slow but our server was very nice. The food was very salty that kind a killed our taste buds
Wonderful rustic Italian food.. just a little noise from street traffic. Both otherwise great
Very pleasant sitting outside on a warm Sunday evening. We had the Prix Fixe menu for restaurant week. The food was good, particularly the trip tip and bread pudding. The service was excellent. There were only 2 other tables filled. Overall pleasant experience.
There is a reason the businesses on all sides of the restaurant are packed and this one appears mostly empty. Extremely disappointed to have made a reservation and ended being ignored and brushed off by staff after my arrival. Even when informing staff that I had a reservation, the staff member tried dismissing the idea that he needed to verify it. Left after he walked away abruptly as if we’d interrupted him from something more important than greeting guests.
Food was amazing and our server was very nice. He seemed to be the only employee and was running around from table to table with large gaps of time in between.
Pre concert dinner on a very interesting occasion. Not only was the first Sunday that the restaurant opened for dinner but they were not ready for all the reservations that showed up.
I was a bit apprehensive at the beginning, my welcome was by saying, we are not taking walk ins before even a hello!!!!!
That did not stopped us from staying and I am glad we did! Food was freshly prepared, the staff was a bit in disarray but they had so much passion for making it right to every customer that instead of dividing and conquer ( only three of them) they all did everything!!!! The ran food, took orders, bartenders, cleaned tables, check with customers and of course looked after each other. That spirit is what make me give them 5 stars! Just imagine with a little bit of direction how far those three can take that place. We had the steak, was a decent size, the tenderloin was a bit undercook and the carbonara that by the time it made it to the table was cold BUT was so delicious that I could not stop. We also had the pancetta flat bread that was a great start!
Overall, was a good discovery that for sure I hope to visit again!
Food was good, servers were pleasant but definitely very hectic. It was the night fo large concert so it did feel like they were not anticipating the large dinner rush that occurred.
Concert at SAP so slower service was expected as everyone was wanting same time... Otherwise fine experience
Small menu, staff wasn’t familiar with what ingredients were in the specials. The one thing I wanted to order, off of the small menu-they were out of. Not sure how That happened, we were the first ones there and the only ones dining. Staff was very friendly though.
We have been here years ago, it was much better then. We won’t be going back.
We were greeted promptly. The service was good. The food was excellent. It was a good meal and a good experience.
We love 71 Saint Peter. It's a great place to relax and enjoy your meal and watch the world go by while surrounded by rustic touches. Typically the service is impeccable, but this time it was a huge miss. Still the food was consistently good, I could have done without being seated next to the loud espresso machine which seemed to take the only two servers to operate it. I also don't like having to continually try to get my server's attention to ask for a refill on my tea rather than trying to enjoy the company at the table with us. Not sure if I will go back for lunch.
This was a nice quaint spot. I wasn't overly impressed with the food for the price that you pay, but it was still good. The staff were very friendly and very attentive. I would consider going back for cocktails and appetizers.
The food was delicious and our waiter Andrew did a great job serving us!
The server was very attentive and helpful with food and wine suggestions. We went before a Sharks game and sat outside. The atmosphere was very lively. The Cinco de Mayo celebrants were also very entertaining with their old cars with the hydraulics. The food was excellent, the wine selection was extensive. The pork was butter soft, cooked to perfection, smoked trout salad delicious.....
Nice location, good menu. Food was tasty.
