Afternoon Tea at Makeney Hall Hotel
The building and grounds are lovely. The afternoon tea was ok - food was quite nice although clearly it had all been prepared earlier and refrigerated; the food came out very promptly and the sandwiches were really cold. The scones were not great - overbaked, different sizes and dry. Sponge cake was nice as were the lemon posset thingies. Service was friendly but there was no-one to greet us when we arrived and we were left alone for long periods of time until someone came to cover for the waitress who apparently had left to deal with "a water emergency". Having said all that, the price is not extravagant so overall value for money was ok.
Lacking in atmosphere and service the hotel was extremely quiet, no music playing and staff who appeared to bring tea but upon being questioned about sandwich choice said they were already made and fresh ones without dressings ie mustard would have to be made. Felt like we were putting them out to comply with request. Another offer of tea was made but no conversation or pleasantries. Nice touch was the edible birthday plaque presented to my friend. Upon leaving the two other tables were not thanked or spoken to as the server had disappeared. Upon finding someone (we had to go to reception) asking if we could order a drink from the bar (which had shutters down) we were informed they had run out of Prosecco which was in the advertised drink of the month so we had a different choice
Not the greatest experience
Lovely sweet things. Fabulous surroundings. Sandwiches were okay and staff disappeared, only asking for about a top up of tea once. But the surroundings were superb and the cakes delicious.
Ive emailed the Hotel as i was very disapointed in the poor service we recieved with our afternoon tea and for the price i paid i was very unhappy this was for a 50th birthday and as i got married here 2 years ago i thought it would be a lovely afternoon but the service was very poor
Lovely location, attentive service and beautiful scones and cakes. My only criticism was that the sandwiches were a bit basic - the fillings weren’t very exciting, and they used ordinary shop sliced bread. Would have been nice to have fresh bread and more fancy fillings. Would still go back though.
Wonderful, we were the only ones in that day so service was very attentive but not overly. The staff had a good balance with this and were quite lovely.
The food was great and most certainly plentiful, anyone moaning that there isn’t enough must have large appetites lol
Lovely setting, would definitely recommend for afternoon tea! x
The setting was perfect with beautiful views. The service was prompt on arrival however the waiting staff were not always around for tea top ups though were pleasant and quick at refilling when available. Would definitely return and recommend.
Lovely afternoon tea, lots of choice. Too much to eat but boxes provided to take home spare cakes. Service fantastic. One of the party had a dairy intolerance and the staff sorted out cakes and sandwiches straight away. A lovely setting.
It was a very pleasant experience. The setting is beautiful. The waitress was very polite and attentive. Plenty to eat and tasty.
My mother and I had afternoon tea as a mothers day gift for her. There was no selection of loose teas or variations of coffee. The sandwich fillings were basic and due to my mother requiring gluten free bread she only received 2 slices equating to 4 quarters whereas I received 8 quarters. The scone my mum received was like a biscuit. The tables had no cloths on them and one of the waitresses wasn't very smartly dressed. We thought of visiting Makeney Hall for a change but will definitely be going back to Morley Hayes instead for the same price and better value for money. Sorry!
Massively overpriced, Massively overpriced, Massively overpriced
Service was good, polite and friendly staff.
Afternoon tea was average, quite expensive at 17 ppp for what you get.
Extortion at 23ppp because it was mothers day and we didn't know about the price hike until we got the bill.
Very naughty, we won't be going back. Shame.
We found everything to be good value, fresh and thoroughly enjoyable.
Afternoon tea was really nice and beautifully presented
Very dissapointed in the quality of afternoon tea, "warm" scones were really cold like just out of the freezer, bread quality was cheap ,you had to ask for butter for the scones and cakes were minimal, there were only 2 other tables being used for Sunday lunch and we had a table with a big chunk of wood missing, salt and pepper pots on the table had spots of gravy splashed on them, cutlery was stained so were the tea pots and coffee pots, we were extremly dissapointed as were were looking forward to a lovely afternoon, it was all wrapped up and finished within the hour.
I definately wouldnt reccomend this venue at all , it has lovely grounds and has so much pontential but sadly lacking in ambience and food quality.
It would be interesting to receive comments back from the Manager, on the plus side they did accommodate our special request for no egg or smoked salmon.
The afternoon tea on the hotel's website looked nothing like we received, it definately wasn't worth the money.
We booked afternoon tea at the Makeney as the day was a very special anniversary for my wife and me.
The sandwiches, cakes, coffee and tea were excellent.
The ambience was non-existent, as there were only two tables laid for Afternoon Tea and they were adjacent to each other - in fact the back of my chair was touching the gentleman's chair at the next table.
It was so quiet that we requested some music and a speaker was brought in and placed on at table on the other side of the room. It was too loud but at least we, and our neighbours could converse without the knowledge that everything could be heard by the other couple.
The waiter brought us two complementary glasses of prosecco as it was our anniversary, which was a very nice touch and was much appreciated.
Unfortunately, after we had enjoyed the occasion - probably mellowed by the prosecco - my wife called in the Ladies toilets on the way out, and was confronted by the filthiest toilet brush we had ever seen in our lives - and, as caravanners, we have seen some sights and sites here and abroad!
It was so bad, my wife took a photo and showed it to the receptionist who agreed it was unacceptable and said she would get housekeeping to rectify the situation.
Not a nice note on which to end the day, and certainly not conducive to returning to the hotel.
