Afternoon Tea at The Palm Court
Stunning location, ambience and a real sense of luxury upon your own small island off the South Devon coast. My second visit and every bit as good as the last.
Beautiful place, obviously pricey but lovely treat.
Despite the food being fantastic, the service I'm afraid was quite poor. On arrival we were asked by reception to take a seat in The Palm Court where we would be seated at our booked table. Once in the restaurant the staff seemed to be running around despite there being only a few people dining and were a bit confused by our presence. We found our own table and were attended to a couple of times by different staff but each request did not produce anything. Water, menus, orders, food, salt and pepper etc took ages to come or simply didn't come at all. The restaurant was by this time empty and staff were busy moving tables and chairs around despite dirty plates and glasses remaining on most other tables. Not a very clean atmosphere. I have worked in the customer service industry for many years. Attention to customers and a clean environment should take precedence over rearranging tables and chairs in other parts of the restaurant. The service however was saved at the end by a very competetent and experienced waiter by the name of Gary who couldn't have been more friendly and attentive - Thank you Gary. It's a shame the rest of the staff were not the same. The food was excellent but for a place such as this, fine bone china would have been more appropriate for afternoon tea. The Palm Court is a very interesting place to spend a few hours on a sunny Autumn afternoon.
Second rate experience and not worth £45 a head!
Champagne good, then after half an hour our tea came out, so as we had ordered this to come out with our food we were very disappointed we had to wait another half hour for a second rate dry sandwich and scones which were flat and overcooked!!
Lovely afternoon tea at this beautiful venue. Our very helpful waiter moved the table setting for us so we were comfortable. It was a very enjoyable experience.
If you, as my husband and I are, are a fan of art deco and all things Agatha Christie then afternoon tea at the Palm Court at the Burgh Island Hotel is a must do. The setting is so atmospheric, on an island you can only reach at low tide, the setting for "and then there were none." The hotel decor is a homage to the era, and the palm court is exquisite, look out for the mermaids on the bar. The afternoon tea itself is good value, not cheap but like the environment it is incredibly Instagram-able and very decadent. All the staff were so friendly and welcoming - I look forward to returning if I am ever in Devon again!
Fantastic experience - a lovely birthday treat. The trip to the Island was by tractor as it was high tide. We were early but that was no problem for the staff who were all extremely friendly and helpful. Superb art deco decor, excellent scones and cream, lovely view and had to have a glass of fizz to honour spirit of the place. It's a 'must do' if in the area. Loved it!
Really nice vintage afternoon tea in this splendid hotel and beautiful location
Lovely ambiance, great setting, very welcoming friendly service
The location is truly stunning and the afternoon tea is very good. The customer service is highly variable with an unreliable receptionist who did not schedule our visit and took little responsibility for the mistakes made. Ensure your parking and transport to the island is clear.
My husband & I had the most amazing day. We were collected by sea tractor and driven across golden sands where we met a smartly dressed man who directed us through to the hotel. We were warmly welcomed and we felt like we had stepped into a different time - the attention to detail - the food / the service all excellent - the venue was beyond our expectations and I have to say it was one of the best days of our lives - I highly recommend Burgh Island Hotel - we were driven back to the car park also! The views were amazing ! We will definitely be returning! Thank you for a truly excellent afternoon - our 2 year Anniversary treat far exceeded our expectations ! I’ve been telling everyone about it!
Outstanding service in an exceptional Art Deco hotel and the most unique Island setting we have experienced!
All staff were incredibly gracious and attentive.
We stayed for tea but will return for a full holiday next!
Excellent service, staff were friendly and very professional. This visit to Burgh Island was our first time and fulfilled an ambition to visit it. It will not be the last time we visit. Decor was as we imagined-lovely and a homage to Art Deco. Nothing was too much trouble and staff were very attentive to our needs. This was just a day trip fo4 us and if this is the standard for a simple visit and cream tea the we look forward to returning for a meal or perhaps a stay. Well done to all! Best wishes, Mary Anne and Tom Hamilton
Lovely hotel in a fantastic setting. Obviously loved the Art Deco decor. Loved the Pilchard Inn too. Great experience.
Even though I had apparently only booked us in for a cream tea although I am sure I wasn't given the option. The staff pulled out all the stops and provided us with a lovely afternoon tea. Beautiful place, fantastic staff.
Dear LesleyO, thank you very much for taking the time to provide us with feedback about your experience. We are delighted to hear that the team made your stay special despite the little hiccup. We look forward to seeing you soon again. Best wishes, Kati Latchford (Director of Food & Beverage)
