Excellent service. Great for family afternoon tea. Loved the bottomless Prosecco! And there’s a kid’s menu option too. Lovely setting and views.
We booked the afternoon tea mainly because the website advertises it as including savouries - we were disappointed to hear this had changed and the savouries were discontinued. They did bring us two slices of sausage roll though, to make up for it.
The cakes etc were extremely sweet, like a child’s party plate - we couldn’t eat it all!
Service at the end was very slow, it seemed we were forgotten, we tried for 15 minutes to catch someone’s eye to bring us the bill. Eventually we had to go up to a member of staff and request our own bill!
Great location, value for money and good cake. Highly recommend!
We had the bottomless Prosecco afternoon tea, everything about it was perfect. The food was lovely and the service was great.
Really enjoyed our time at Roast. The cakes and pastries were delicious :)
When I came to the front desk I was greeted by two lovely ladies but that's where it ended. I had wrote on my booking that I am pescatarian and one of the ladys on the desk took that information through to the kitchen. I was lead through to the bar area and that is where the afternoon tea was served. One of the ladys from the bar came over and asked me what tea I would like and I went for fresh mint.... well that was just like funny coloured water, I've had way better fresh mint tea at home, I was then served my afternoon tea and it came out with meat on the plate. I brought this up with my server and she turned round to me and said "well you didn't tell me" (not the way you should speak to a customer and I didn't feel like I needed to because kitchenwas told and I was the only one having the afternoonteaat that time) she went off with the sandwiches but left me with the sausage roll which when she came back I then had to send that back too. The seating wasn't comfortable at all because of the height of the tables which were knee height you couldn't comfortably eat the food. The food once it had all come out was very much disappointing, the sandwiches were dry like they had been left out also the scones were so over cooked they were dry and like rocks! When the replacement veggie sausage roll came out that was another big let down! If you cant do a nice replacement then dont do it at all.
I have done quite a few afternoon tea's and I can say this is probably the worst experience I've had.
Served in bar area on very low table with stalls not chairs, not particularly comfortable.
Pasty and sausage rolls a nice addition to classic afternoon tea. However the date cake was very dry.
Gluten free offering was very good, only small criticism is that scones were crunchy and crumbly.
On the positive side there was lots of jam and cream for scones.
The afternoon tea doesn't really compare to the big hotel offering which is a shame, this was just a bit meh.
Roast has a real opportunity to do something exciting with their afternoon tea tying in with the amazing restaurant food. This was just very average.
Shocking waste of money . Our table was awful sat in a corridor viewing the toilets. You pay £30 per head for 2 slices of basic cake , 2 slices of bread a scone and a pastry. Dont do it .
If you want a proper afternoon tea experience without paying a high price at other restaurants and hotels, go to Roast. The ambiance is elegant, yet causal and relaxed. Plus, the interior décore and setting at London's Borough Market makes it worthwhile to stop by.
My friends and I didn’t have a nice experience at all, unfortunately. We got accused of being late, when we were actually early. The staff didn’t seem to have a clue what was going on. We got seated at quite a small table for 3 people having afternoon tea. After that we waited at least 20 min before we could order any drinks.
The food was ok, but as mentioned earlier- the staff seemed clueless and were not very friendly or helpful.
Well first I will say this experience ended well, however it started horribly and until I asked to speak to a manager, the service was awful and the atmosphere (they serve afternoon tea in the bar on very uncomfortable stools) was not great. Once I finally spoke up to the manager everything changed, they were more attentive and offered us complimentary glasses of champagne and a discount on the bill to make up for the poor service at the start. It did make me feel heard and understood and overall why I’m giving this 4 stars instead of 3.
The price had changed from £25 to £30 from the time we booked it which was a shame. Staff were lovely. Food was alright, nothing amazing. Cakes could be better, bit dry and not much flavour. Scones were a little dry. Ambience was nice and lovely looking over the market.
I booked a champagne afternoon tea for my husband's birthday but when we arrived, we were placed at a small table in the crowded bar with people standing at close proximity around us. When we objected, we were begrudgingly moved to a table in the restaurant, but we're not made to feel at all welcome. Disgraceful service.
This was absolutely horrible! There were multiple reasons for this review. We try to have Afternoon Tea in many countries and this place had great reviews. First the server never once came and checked on us after he delivered our tea. Their was a food runner that brought the food. The waiter had two tables near us and he was more interested in turning tables, by clearing and resetting the tables around us vise asking how our meal was. The food, the scones and desserts were very dry and felt like they were multiple days old, not fresh. They gave us 4 different sandwiches and one was a roast beef with horseradish- the horseradish was so strong (I like horseradish) those sandwiches were completely inedible. One of the other sandwiches was a curry chicken and to our surprise nothing was in the bread. They advertise afternoon tea but their focus is not on afternoon tea. We don't like to complain so it was so much easier to just leave. If the waiter had stopped by I would have discussed some of our issues. After us sitting waiting for our check for over 45 minutes I had to ask. In the end we would not be back for afternoon tea or any other service they provide! The tea was good, the only thing unfortunately!
This was booked for a friends special birthday treat. Unfortunately our table wasn't ready for the time we booked so we had to wait around by the bar for about 20mins.
We were eventually shown to our table which felt a bit squashed right next to the end of the bar.A pleasant member of staff brought the menus ,we had to wait a while for them to return. The drinks arrived and we thought they would be followed by the food . We had to ask several times if the food was on it's way and that we wanted to have our drinks(hot) with the food. We were offered more tea when the food eventually arrived as by way of an apology ,only to be charged extra for this.I didn't want to mention it on the day as I was treating my friend. The food was pleasant, the staff polite but overall not an exceptional experience for a special birthday. Sadly, very disappointing.
Warm welcome wasn't unfortunately followed up by an attentive service. Despite only very few tables occupied, all waiters were busy in a kind of training/meeting so we (as well as the other guests) were left at least 15 mins seated without anyone caring about us. Finally a waiter came to collect orders for drinks and teas: 2 of our choices of tea from the menu were not available (…???… afternoon tea and tea selection incomplete???…). At the end of the day, teas available were nice, scones very good, sandwiches just average, cakes anonymous and definitely not worth an afternoon tea and were left by most of guests.
Afternoon Tea at Roast was incredible. The food was delicious and they have vegan and vegetarian options that were just as good as the regular one. The service was wonderful and I highly suggest you book this place or visit for drinks after a long day.
Great tea spread added champagne as it was a bargain. Only bad thing is that i think you should serve the teas along with the food -there was a lengthly time gap inbetween. Therefore the teas got cold before we managed to get through 1/2 of the tea. So ask the tea to be served at the same time
The afternoon tea was great, but it was such a shame that we had to wait 45 minutes for our table when we had booked in advanced and called to confirm our booking. In this 45 minutes we were largely ignored and I had to seek out the managers on several occasions to ask for an update. As I said such a shame as the food was delicious.
As always a lovely time at Roast. The table service was faultless but I had to knock the score down because when I called around 40 mins before my booking time to say I was having public transport issues and would about 15 mins late but was definitely coming the lady I spoke was nothing but utterly rude. Why? I have no idea ...
Really nice food and ambience. Had a lovely afternoon
Dry coffee and walnut cake with underwhelming sandwiches.
The food had a great concept- seasonal ingredients, but did not live up to expectations. Flavourless sandwiches with barely any filling, jam which had clearly been purchased from a supermarket (Not the damson as advertised) and dry cakes. The service was awful for most of our visit- we were left after being seated for almost 15 minutes without being acknowledged, we were brought the wrong tea (there were only two of us to cater for), plates and cutlery were missing on the table and we ended up being served by 4 different members of staff. We were charged £3 for a bottle of still water which one of the waitresses removed from our table when the food was brought out, never to return... Toilets had no toilet paper and were very grubby. With so many excellent places in London to go for afternoon tea, it is safe to say that we won’t be revisiting Roast.
"Would you like a glass of champagne?" "OK, but can we have it before the tea so we will drink it with the sandwiches" Next, the Champagne and tea comes. It is then 20 minutes before any food at all comes by which time the tea is cold and stewed and we had to ask for it to be replaced.
Other than that, not bad.
Nice experience. Friendly staff and lovely views over Borough Market. A lot of food, we could not finish all of it. But definitely worth a visit.
I love the restaurant and have eaten here a few times & loved it, but afternoon tea was disappointing. Sandwiches were pretty flavourless and we found a bone in the coronation chicken one. Scones were so hard they crumbled to nothing when you cut them open. But the ambiance of Roast is lovely...and as it was my mum's birthday, we still had a lovely afternoon. Would definitely go back.. just not for afternoon tea.
Food was very nice but service not so great - lots of waiting and were missing one set of food, although waiters said it was coming we never received it. No milk was brought for tea. Overall very nice and well-priced food but not good service.
Afternoon Tea: Took nearly an hour to be served. Didn’t take our drinks order when we sat. Had to ask twice for a soda and lime. Served our pots of tea after the food came. Average tasting food, well presented. Sandwiches a little dry. Tables around us were not cleared straight away after other guests left, not nice when you are still eating yours. Nice views of Borough market
We had a 12:00 appointment for afternoon tea, but the hostess was so rude we left after waiting approximately 20 minutes for a table to be cleared. There were many other tables open, but because we asked to please not be sat right next to the noisy kitchen we were sent to sit at the bar and left to wait. After 20 minutes we looked and the table had not been cleared at all, so we went and found afternoon tea elsewhere.
I would definitely recommend doing afternoon tea here! The entire experience was incredible. We booked very close to the time of our actual appointment and the staff was very nice about this and was very considerate, especially considering there were some mistakes from our (the customer) side of things. Would HIGHLY recommend this place the food is great and the atmosphere was AMAZING
We chose this place for afternoon tea based on online reviews. think our waitstaff forgot about us. We had to ask several others that worked there for things we needed. We had to sit in bar area, which for one in party was okay but the other person had to sit on a low stool without back. The tea was nice but besides that would not recommend. May be a good place for lunch or dinner but would choose somewhere else if you want afternoon tea experiences.
Sandwiches stale, had been made in morning and refrigerated hence tasteless and hard.
cakes one good one stale.
Service indifferent, waitress made no enquiry if all ok even after first lot of sandwiches returned.
Very disappointed as this was a birthday treat for my friend.
Food was delicious; it would be good if portion sizes of the cakes were smaller but of more variety than just two cakes. Didn't see a single person finish their portion, perhaps a couple's option at a lower cost would be better (it took two of us 2 hours to get through everything, and we still didn't finish).
Celebrated my mother's 75th birthday with afternoon tea. Great service, kind enough to sit us in the restaurant rather than bar (which is where they normally serve tea and would not have been appropriate for my mother). Brought discrete birthday candle for us to wish happy birthday. Attentive polite busy staff that did not rush us. Overall a lovely experience that I recommend to all.
Lovely place and afternoon tea included many British things to try. Scones were a bit too small and too much like biscuit.
Lovely setting, quite a basic afternoon tea for the price.
Fantastic food, lovely staff. Would definitely recommend
Tea was wonderful. I highly recommend Roast. A beautiful restaurant with rock n roll memorabilia, a great view on the upper level down to borough market. Not crowded-- service pleasant, not overwhelming.
Afternoon tea was fantastic, the restaurant, staff, location and value was perfect, great experience of a London afternoon tea.
If you stumble across this restaurant like I did then book it you won’t regret it.
Great afternoon tea, really hits the spot. The cakes were scrumptious, and there was plenty of tea and Pims to wash it all down
