Afternoon Tea at Sopwell House
A pleasant light room. Classic three tiers of 7 lovely cakes, 4 scones and 8 sandwiches. All excellent. We had said we ate fish but no meat so easy for the sandwiches and the waitress said they had gelatine in some cakes so should they substitute others without. This was very thoughtful.
We were offered more sandwiches which we did not want but asked for an extra scone which came quickly. There was no additional charge.
A lovely place, good tea and great service.
I have been to the grove at there is little comparison. I don’t feel the hotel is particularly lovely interior wise but it was perfectly acceptable ( although quite pricey) it only occurred to us when we’d left that we could’ve taken the leftover cakes with us. This wasn’t offered but we saw others with boxes. We had the table near the piano which was a little too noisy for my mid 80 year old mum. Also we realise it’s a spa hotel but don’t love seeing the guests walking around in dressing gowns. Staff were helpful ish!
Absolutely amazing. We were offered extra sandwiches or cakes. Nothing was too much trouble for our waiter Dumitru. Will definitely be back.
Beautiful afternoon tea, fantastic service, delicious sandwiches, freshly bakes scones in an elegant, clean and spacious dining area - just - PERFECT!
Beautiful location with lovely food and amazing service! One of the best afternoon teas I’ve had... the food was good for someone like me who still wants some chocolate and vanilla flavoured desserts and not just fruit flavoured items (like most afternoon teas now!!). Plus you can have delicious coffees as well! Must go!
We had our tea after a long time as there was some mix up, but the food was great. Too much to eat may be 1 less scone
Absolutely amazing, staff were lovely 😘
Didn’t think that the sandwiches were that wonderful but we don’t eat meat or shellfish so a bit more restricted!!! We had the most wonderful waitress who couldn’t do enough for us and our grandchildren!! Really excellent
Fantastic recent experience! All dietary requirements carefully considered by catering team and hosts & staff couldn’t do enough. Highly recommend, only exception is that vegetarian sandwiches could be a little more exciting!
A very enjoyable Pimms afternoon tea for a family birthday. The sandwiches were very nice & they were happy to provide us with some more on request.
Lovely scones & pastries. There was even an extra pastry for the birthday girl 😀
The service was excellent & the waitress was so nice, very attentive & helpful. Good value for money.
We were promptly shown to our seats and the menu's were given to us. We had three creams tea's and one child's cream tea. My son was asked if he would like a hot chocolate instead of a pot of tea, which he chose. My son liked having his own set of sandwiches and cakes. The sandwiches and cakes were delicious. We were told if we wanted any more just to ask, but I found I was soon full. Nothing was too much trouble it was a very relaxing atmosphere full of families and friends enjoying afternoon teas. We come home with a box of cakes.
There was a wedding on at the hotel so the staff were run off their feet. We did have to ask for more tea & sandwich several times. The tea varied in temperature from cold, warm then scolding hot. We were forgotten about and this was a shame because we were really looking forward to being pampered. When I asked the waiter to remove the service charge he slammed my receipt down - not impressed. You need to sort out the wasps as one drowned in my milk!
An amazing experience for a very special occasion. The waiting staff were attentive without being overbearing. The food was exceptional quality. If we needed anything all we had to do was ask. The tea was plentiful and we could have as much as was required. We couldn't eat all of the extremely delicious cakes, so asked for a box to bring them home and enjoy later. All in all a very memorable, enjoyable afternoon. I would definitely recommend.
The tea was lovely. The only negatives were the ambient music which was not loud but certainly of an acquired taste. Also my wife was shocked about the state of the ladies toilets which were both dated and also wet floors etc. I think threy need hourly checks.
Very pleasant maybe a few more savouries and less sweets
We visited Sopwell House for afternooon tea on the hottest day of the year. The temperature inside was perfect! The service was excellent. They were very attentive without being annoying. We were offered refills of everything and were able to take home what we couldn’t eat. The restaurant was beautiful and quiet. Between us we had the traditional, Pimms and Champagne tea. My daughter said the Pimms was excellent. Only complaint was that the tea was not quiet hot enough but that was a minor thing. Very much enjoyed the afternoon and would love to return to this lovely venue.
Sopwell is a great venue, quiet, staff helpful. Food was plentiful. Really enjoyed the afternoon
I chose Sopwell house as it featured on a website as one of the best places to go for afternoon tea in Hertfordshire. The restaurant itself was lovely. We visited the restaurant on an incredibly hot day and the restaurant was lovely and cool, but not too cool. I was almost put off by some reviews that said it was too hot. Another reason I chose this hotel was because they serve afternoon tea at 12.30pm so we could treat it as a lunch.
The selection of sandwiches, cakes and scones was lovely. There was also an impressive selection of teas and coffees. My mother is pescatarian and was catered for brilliantly. She said the scones and the lemon & ginger tea were the nicest she’d ever had. The service was brilliant without being over bearing. My only gripe was that I’d have preferred to have had more sandwiches and less cakes (and I have a sweet tooth). We had quite a few to take away, they were only too happy to provide a box to take them home in.
Delightful afternoon tea, great cup of tea, nice food although we did ask to have the smoked salmon sandwich replaced with a cheddar cheese one and we got extra egg mayo instead, which couldn't be eaten due to allergies. However, a nice atmosphere and lovley staff. Great for a special occasion, but a bit pricey for a regular outing. It was a pleasant experience and a nice afternoon.
Have been to Sopwell House many many times over the years. Afternoon tea this time was beyond disappointing. Service was lacking, we had to keep asking for every small detail. Tea tea luke warm scones were dry, and above all there were dead blue bottles on the floor where we sat. We had to ask the staff to clear them up. We also noticed dead insects on the windowsills and floor. The table cloths were dirty, the glasses were dirty and everything in the restaurant looked a little tired. Afternoon tea is normally served in the lounge and for some reason they have decided to now serve in the restaurant.
We were also rushed out at the end of our afternoon, and it was quite obvious even though I mentioned my disappointment to the staff that no one was really that interested!!!
Great service, relaxing atmosphere and delicious food. We particularly liked the little extras - plenty of extra sandwiches or cakes given at no extra cost. It’s the little things that make the difference. Thank you Sopwell House, an afternoon well spent - relaxed and not rushed.
Thank you for making my grandma’s 92nd birthday a real treat!
Excellent as always. Have been several time before and is always way above all the fancy London hotels !
We visited Sopwell House for afternoon tea to celebrate my mum’s birthday. We were very well looked after and nothing was too much trouble - tea and sandwich refills were offered to us. We would recommend afternoon tea here to anyone. The food was delicious, with a variety of yummy sandwiches, scones and cakes. Will come back!
Lovely afternoon with my relative, staff remember the special occasion too. Very attentive staff and food good. Would definitely recommend. Champagne was great although a bit on the pricey side. We had a bottle of wine on the terrace in the sunshine afterwards which was very nice as well.
We had to wait 30 mins to order. We had to ask for a tea strainer and the sandwiches were cold and the bread damp .
The scones were good and enjoyable.
The cakes were mixed, some reasonable and some not to bad for a seaside cafe.
This was our first visit, we had the afternoon tea as lunches were fully booked, not sure we will try again.
Very friendly, attentive service. Good choice of sandwiches, cakes and scones. Tea and food topped up as required. Nice ambience. Only slight criticisms was white muslin curtains looked a little bit tired and in need of updating/cleaning. Would definitely return
The sandwiches were fresh and tasty, the scones warm and fresh but the cake selection wasn't so good. The lady greeting us was very frosty, didn't smile and we felt uncomfortable. Our server however Matteo was very polite and helpful. Disappointed by the fact 3 people get the same amount of cakes as 2 people and pay the same amount. This isn't fair. Won't be going again, was a birthday treat too
It was very very hot and there was no airconditioning- for A 5 STAR it was kind of shocking- we expressed concern and it wasnt really solved.
Have been to Sopwell House numerous times but after this experience will not likely return. Service was terrible it took 30 minutes to order and then we had to wait for a long time just to get a cup of tea. Despite booking in advance well over the specified 48 hours our dairy free and gluten free afternoon teas were the worst we have had at any hotel establishment not to mention got mixed up and as a result my 4 month old son who is dairy intolerant has been extremely ill since. I asked for dairy free as I’m breastfeeding a dairy intolerant baby. I was given dairy instead of non dairy sandwiches when replenished despite asking a number of times. Our waitress did not communicate or understand us well at all which led to the confusion. Scones were dry and cakes we took home and threw away as they were bland. To charge full price for a sub par product and service is not acceptable. What was meant to be a celebration for my mother and I turned out to be quite the opposite. I will not be recommending and will be contacting Sopwell House directly too.
Fantastic event and perfect to celebrate my parents anniversary and mother's birthday.
Really nice setting and service. Would defiantly return :)
Great afternoon tea with girlfriends. Was asked as soon as we got there how we could be helped? Staff were attentive throughout our time there. Food & beverages were lovely. I would definitely return. Thank you.
The afternoon tea was lovely and the service was great. Well priced and a very good experience 👍🏽.
I thought that the water should have been in with price,
Greeted with a warm welcome. Service was fantastic. Staff attentive and friendly. Food was delicious and fresh. Beautiful, clean dining room and hotel. Overall very pleased with the whole experience and will definitely be returning in the future. Highly recommended and thoroughly enjoyed.
Very nice afternoon tea . Lovely ,friendly staff .
Avoid the £4.50 water charge when you didn’t even ask for it- they asked when we arrived I wrongly assumed it was free! Other than that lovely staff and atmosphere
Made to feel special for my 30th with a little happy birthday chocolate and catered so well for my needs as I’m pregnant. So friendly, always professional, always great service, food always amazing and even better that it’s refillable! What’s not to like? ❤️
