Was an amazing afternoon, great service and lovely atmosphere.
Amazing service . Would highly recommend one of the best for afternoon tea !
Sad to say I was really disappointed with the afternoon I had on Sunday for my daughters 40th Birthday. The service was very poor and not what we were expecting from such a well regarded establishment. The atmosphere in the room was lacking and we had to get the waiters attention when we needed something. The food was nice but there was not enough jam and cream provided for 3 people and 6 scones. We asked for some more but waited a little while until it came. We were also confused with the cake selection. There were 7 types of small cakes on the top tier and only one of each, we ended up cutting some of them into 3 so we could all try a bit but they were a bit small for this really. I have been to many afternoon teas and there are usually less variety but enough for one each per person. Looking around the room the cake selection appeared to be the same quantity whether it was being shared between 2 people or more (in our case there were 3 of us). We usually leave with left overs to take home but this time had eaten it all, making it feel like there was less food than usual. My daughter wanted another coffee but gave up waiting for the opportunity to ask. I would have chosen not to pay a service charge but this was already added onto the bill so it was just easier to pay it.
I feel disappointed that I chose to bring my daughters here for the celebration as it was not what I was expecting.
My friends and I thoroughly enjoyed our afternoon tea in the Cocktail Lounge at Sopwell House. The food was delicious, especially the sandwiches and the scones. There is a good choice of tea which was refilled without issue. If you fancy a cocktail, do indulge as they were made exceptionally well. The staff were very accommodating and professional throughout, in particular Milan, who couldn’t have done more for us, even bought it was a very busy Saturday late afternoon/early evening. We all said we would return. If I had to pick a negative it would be the cost, which reminded me of Central London...but it is a beautiful venue and we would all pay the same again.
Lovely place with great ambience. Food nice but a bit awkward having to keep asking for tea /sandwich refills.
It was ok even tho we have all vegetarian, instead of just for one person but we did peak.to a member of staff to ask for meat and we still got more veg,as she didnt understand and i got a 9 pound service charge which i wasnt told about
Very poor afternoon tea, over rated, over priced!
drafty windows, cold restaurant, leaking ceiling and windows
service is slow and poor, staff not trained, not good value for money.
A decent selection of sandwich filling , although the first plate had been uncovered for a little too long . We had to ask for top ups of sandwiches and tea . Would have been nicer if we’d been asked .especially given the price per person . The staff were polite, the surroundings clean and comfortable.stated live music and it was obviously a cd !
Would recommend thank you
Amazing. Loved it. Pianist was really good. The food was amazing. Staff were really polite.
Very friendly staff, the food was incredible and the pianist was a perfect touch who really added to the lovely ambience
The staff were supercilious, unhelpful and elusive. A very loud pianist made conversation difficult, without adding much to the ambiance. The tea itself was excellent, with lovely, fresh scones and exquisite pastries. We were able to take leftovers home in a neat little box.
Our second visit for afternoon tea and as before everything was lovely. The vegan selection looked and tasted as good. It is a shame however that two sharing one selection there aren’t two of each of the top cakes. We had to cut them in half do that we could both have a taste. Scones are just amazing.
Lovely afternoon tea, with a good selection of food. The occasion was made even nicer due to the attentive staff and the addition of live music.
we ordered filter coffee but you had run out find this very odd, my cappuccino was cold we ordered English breakfast tea but got jasmine tea instead, so we sent it back when we did get English breakfast tea it was very weak, the sandwiches were not very fresh and cold i presume they were made in advance, i also found the staff inattentive.
Fantastic as always although my friend and I said I would prefer more sandwiches and scones and not worry about the top layer. We had a few of the cakes but only the ones we could cut in half for both of us try. The only disappointment is that we weren't sat on the lounge chairs which we had been on our previous visit. But where we were was lovely. The only thing was the piano playing was a bit loud. But overall fantastic day and the service was outstanding. We shall be back.
Lovely atmosphere and friendly staff. Will definitely go back again.
We had a really good time at this afternoon tea.
The place looks great, very neat and welcoming, the tea selection is good for everyone, and the finger sandwiches and pastries selection were delicious.
Matteo delivered a perfect service throughout our time there.
Lovely afternoon with a friend. Food was beautiful and service was amazing. Will definitely be visiting again. Loved the piano being played in the background.
Mmmmm ....as afternoon tea goes was not the most exciting I’ve had . No views of grounds ... fully curtained...staff pleasant and courteous... no disabled toilet ...need more sandwich for the price and was overcharged for pre drink ...as service charges came to £7 naturally no tip ....
We went to Sopwell House to celebrate New Years Day with afternoon tea. We have been going there for many years to celebrate NYDay but haven’t been there in the last 3 years.
This time there was hardly anyone in the room, not a great atmosphere, rude service, mediocre food at best and the price for the ‘festive’ afternoon tea was £29.95 which was excessive for what we were served. The price used to be £19.95 for much better quality. We did mention the salmon sandwich was inedible as the bread was stale, nothing was done about it. Shame this was a disappointing visit.
Waited over 30 mins for the tea
Cakes were not good
This is a great place if you wish for a really good afternoon tea in a nice hotel and don't wish to pay central London prices. The hotel is a little way out of St Albans, so a nice place to stay if you are visiting the area. The hotel is very pleasant and the staff are most welcoming. The food is fresh and delicious. Some of the items on offer change according to the season. It being just before Christmas, there were bit-size mince pies and stollen as well as a square of Christmas Cake and a small Christmas Tree made of green macaron mixture. The staff will, on request, provide a nice take-home box if you are unable to eat everything offered.
Food was lovely. Alternatives offered on sandwiches if you didn’t like. Extra sandwiches offered if you wanted more. Service was really good.
Great service with a smile, lovely piano music in the background. Lovely food.
Absolutely fantastic experience. Food was enjoyable very festive and just wonderful.
Great place for afternoon tea, staff are friendly and helpful, lovely treat just before Christmas
Took my mum for her birthday, nothing too much trouble, could even take uneaten cakes home. Would go again
Lovely afternoon tea at Sopwell in the restaurant. Fairly quiet but it was a Monday. Enjoyed the live piano player. Lovely food. Requested extra sandwiches and they brought out loads more. Slight confusion over the price as the website advertised price was different to the in-house price. They quickly recified it and charged us the lower price. Lovely experience, would go back and recommend it.
Afternoon Tea at Sopwell House was so nice. The pianist was brilliant and created a lovely ambience. Best afternoon tea I have been to (including Luton Hoo).
Very noisy room the cocktail bar was so much nicer the last 2 years. Waited for coffee for 20 minutes then it arrived it was lukewarm, sent it back and waited at least another 20 minutes
We had a splendid Afternoon Tea in the Cocktail Lounge. Sat around the huge Festive decorated fireplace on plush comfy velvet sofa’s. The sandwiches were fresh tasty and in abundance, regularly replenished by our lovely waiter. The scones were warm straight from the oven and the variety of cakes did not disappoint. In fact there was so much offered we failed to finish it all and opted to take some cakes home for later. We had loose leaf breakfast Tea which was hot and constantly replenished with a fresh pot. One of our party was gluten free and said she was delighted by their efforts and said it was the best gluten free tea she had ever had. Most definitely a 5 star experience.
The venue was perfect. Our day was absolutely great. Food good. Guitarist was lovely. Staff were brilliant. We thoroughly enjoyed and have been recommending to family and friends. Will definitely come again
Our Christmas afternoon tea included some lovely Christmassy themed cakes, such as, a macaroon Christmas tree, a cheesecake Christmas pudding and freshly made sandwiches. The scones were very tasty too. Overall, a good selection, freshly prepared. The musician provided good unintrusive, background music which is more than could be said for the family with screaming children.
The sandwiches were a little too cold (making them hard) and I would have preferred a greater variety of bread and styles.
On the plus side you could ask for a top up at no extra charge.
Tip for Sopwell. Remember to explain the teas available and their characteristics. I saw the tea selection sample folder, but it was not used.
Very nice atmosphere and setting. Food very good quality and staff attentive
Our experience was good but we were surprised that we only had one tiered serving platter for three guests with enough cakes at the top for probably two guests. We had to ask for extra cakes as there weren’t enough for three people. The quality of the cakes was very good. Other tables with three guests were treated to two full servings.
We spent a hugely enjoyable three hours. We were extremely well looked after, not rushed at all, and the whole afternoon was a total pleasure. Being near Christmas, Sopwell House was beautifully decorated and additionally we had a pianist to accompany our champagne tea which added to the experience. I would totally recommend this to anyone.
Excellent tea with good choice of sandwiches and mini cakes/pastries and the quintessential scones, jam and cream. Extremely good value as everything was replenishable at no extra charge. Prefer to sit in library as their restaurant is a bit formal and lacking in atmosphere but would still go again!
Food was lovely however the table was way too big for 6 people! Had to shout to hear each other!
It was a lovely afternoon and the staff were very tentative.
Food was yumny and they replenished the sandwiches that we liked.
A lovely day and experience overall.
This was my second time there and defo recommend it.
