Afternoon Tea at The Montagu Arms Hotel
Afternoon tea at The Montagu Arms is reminiscent of the rituals of its 1840s origins, but with a twist.
Guests will enjoy an unforgettable afternoon tea experience in quintessential English surroundings in comfort of our cosy lounge with log fires or in the conservatory overlooking the manicured gardens.
A unique ‘course by course’ tasting journey starts with a savoury selection of delicate finger sandwiches and an array of sweet treats, before arriving at freshly baked scones served with homemade jam and clotted cream. Your afternoon tea will be perfectly accompanied by a selection of finest loose leaf teas and fairtrade
A very pleasant experience from start to finish. Good choice of sandwiches and made on the premises savoury treats (order savoury tea in advance) as well as the usual sweet version. A nice selection of speciality teas as well as trad. Very comfortable, quiet and cosy room with soft furnishings. Respectful, friendly, quietly efficient and un-fussy service. A proper treat!
The setting is nice but the food let it down. Too much fish involved, the sandwiches were uninspired and the scones were tiny with hardly any fruit. Service was slow and the tea ordered was wrong when it arrived. We had a savoury/sweet mix and had to ask for a fresh knife and plate to cut our scones after having meat.
A mediocre afternoon tea given the price and location
Took my parents here for a lovely afternoon tea last weekend. The staff were very attentive and the food was incredible. The tea selection was large and we were given the opportunity to smell each tea before making our choice. The hotel itself is a little old fashioned.
Really lovely afternoon tea for my 20th wedding anniversary, they happily provided food options to accommodate my dietary requirements. Would definitely recommend.
Very welcoming place, we changed the booking a couple of times and they were VERY accommodating.
Delicious food, excellent waiting staff and lovely setting, we will be back.
The hotel is situated in the village of Beaulieu and is a beautiful hotel. We had the savoury afternoon tea which was delicious and highly recommended. We sat in the conservatory which overlooked the garden and it was very peaceful. I will definitely be making a return visit
Very relaxed atmosphere, excellent service and food, choice of savoury and sweet choices for afternoon tea, we were not rushed, plenty of top ups for the tea if required, would certainly recommend
Excellent service, great food, calming atmosphere and would definitely recommend and return!
Excellent food and service as usual. The Afternoon Tea, whether sweet or savoury, is delicious and surprisingly filling.
A treat of an afternoon. Delicious sandwiches and cakes that melt in your mouth.
Lovely relaxing atmosphere service was great would definitely go again .
Very pleasant setting overlooking the garden. Good service
Perfect afternoon tea.
Excellent venue and food. The service was impeccable and we were all made to feel thoroughly welcome. The meal plan was clearly explained to us all, and our children were included in all their conversations.
Wonderful setting, attentive friendly staff and delicious food. I have had many an afternoon tea in the area and this was definitely one of the best. Thank you for a memorable visit.
Really enjoyed our full afternoon tea, friendly service, however we felt we waited awhile for our tea to be served. Beautiful surroundings in the forest and pretty hotel garden.
A nice spot in the New Forst to enjoy a leisurely tea
The afternoon tea was excellent, the sandwiches were fresh and the cakes delicious. We couldn't eat all the cakes and the staff very kindly offered to box the remaining cakes for us to take home. The staff were superb, friendly and efficient, fetching fresh tea without being request.
The only way the afternoon tea could be improved upon was by replacing the metal tea and hot waterpot with China ones. A minor detail.
I would recommend the sweet tea which my friends enjoyed. However, I don’t eat bread so had ordered the savoury menu. On the website it was said to include a Scotch egg, a sausage roll and homemade pork pie plus 2 savoury scones with cream cheese. I received half a scotch egg, a tiny bite-size sausage roll and a small puff pastry with smoked salmon. The 2 savoury scones were rock hard and the cheese was tasteless. I have had a savoury teas before at the Montagu, but this was definitely below par. I didn’t say anything at the time because it was a special tea celebrating my step-mother’s 90th Birthday, which we had been looking forward to.
Went for a special occasion as my best friend is getting married end of the month so we wanted a relaxed afternoon to chat and enjoy afternoon tea. We were not disappointed..everything was just perfect..apart from the weather which is beyond anyone’s control ..but did stop us from enjoying the beautiful gardens more, which were still splendid even in the rain. Food was wonderfully prepared and tasted delicious. We arrived an hour early and didn’t expect to be seated but we were kindly shown to our table within ten minutes..very thoughtful service and much appreciated, especially on a very rainy day. We enjoyed the comforts of the hotel very much.
We had a lovely time at the Montagu Arms for afternoon tea. We had a table of 7, and we fortunately had our own room (the Paris Room). This made for a lovely, quiet and special experience. The savoury and sweet options were both delicious and the selection of teas extensive. We would definitely come again, and hopefully would be able to sit in the garden.
I was recommended here by my daughter who had a lovely experience so decided to bring my husband and friend for their birthdays. I thought I had mentioned their birthdays on my booking but nothing was mentioned at the table, however the lady at the table next door was offered a plate of cakes for their birthday which the lady declined as it was not for them - I think they had the tables mixed up but felt a bit awkward to say!
I booked a mixture of sweet and savoury and noted that I am vegetarian but was not advised that other than the cheese scones none of the savoury food was suitable for me. When I mentioned this to the waitress she asked if I would like some extra sweets but never returned with them.
I would also note that from sitting us down and ordering our drinks it was over 30 minutes before we received them and had anyone else to the table. These are all just small things but makes a difference to the experience overall.
Scotch egg was served cold. Chutney for the scones was very sharp, like the vinegar had not been cooked off enough. Staff were amenable when paying attention, they weren’t very attentive. Disappointing experience, this was also a baby shower and no additional effort was made in this regard. Why ask??

Thank you and kind regards Jeremy
The food was good but not a lot of it. For the amount it cost I Have had a lot better.
Afternoon tea was very good quality. Unfortunately you need to book the savoury menu in advance, it sounded delicious. I would have liked more sandwiches but have realised I’m an afternoon tea traditionalist and chocolate cakes don’t figure in an afternoon tea for me, lovely as they were they were very rich. The carrot cake wasn’t to my taste. The scones were delicious however.
Staff were lovely, professional yet friendly and I look forward to a future visit.
Second visit and not disappointed. Service is first class and informative and also welcoming. A must visit either as a stay, dinner or afternoon tea or a great combination.
Positives- Service was lovely, the staff were very nice. Not so positives- The menu advised a savoury option but we were told this had to be pre booked when we asked for it! There isn’t an option to do this when booking so we considered you could just choose on the day. Not having a sweet tooth the experience was not as hoped. The food was also poor value for money to my opinion. We could have had much better for much less. We won’t be returning.
Very nice food and excellent service. Would come here again.
We had Sunday afternoon tea. The food was fantastic, waiter service was attentive and in the background when needed.
It was a lovely setting and the waiter was very good, delicious food and wine. Nice touches with home made scones and jam and the cakes were really good. My only tip would be to put chocolate or strawberry butter cream in the macaroons and not jam. But it was a wonderful experience and we plan to return in the Spring.
Excellent value for money for afternoon tea. Savoury option was delightful too. Excellent service matched the value. Lovely setting.

We went their with my elderly parents for a birthday treat for them and we had a great time. We had the afternoon cream tea and it was absolutely delicious. Very much enjoyed by us all.

Lovely place with beautiful garden. We enjoyed the afternoon tea but didn’t feel it was worth the money due to the slightly crusty/stale sandwiches and the very slow service with no consistency as to who was serving us.
Wonderfully scenic gardens to enjoy a catch up with a friend for afternoon tea. It is not the cheapest but well worth the cost as the sandwiches, cakes and service was first rate.
Food excellent, service good, staff pleasant, professional and helpful.
Went here for a birthday afternoon tea, food was very yummy and the option of a savoury afternoon was an added bonus as not many places offer it, would definitely go back again on a different occasion
Very enjoyable. Would have been excellent if the sandwiches had had more filling. The service was great.
This was our first visit to The Montague Arms,The tea was lovely, Sandwiches and Pastries were superb, and the scones were delicious, warm and light. The only downside was the tea was cold to start with and very weak, but when we mentioned this it was changed straight away! We visited on a very wet Sunday so could not appreciate the lovely gardens!., We had a nice window seat which I had requested.Tank you, I shall remember this as it was a Birthday treat!
We had a lovely afternoon tea at the Montagu Arms. The staff were so friendly, the food was scrumptious and the tea was flowing. The fact that we’d had to cancel the one vegan member of our party wasn’t an issue (although we did feel guilty). The gardens were very pretty and the building lovely. We would definitely revisit.
We were given Afternoon Tea here as a 50th Birthday treat. Without a doubt it was the best Afternoon Tea I have ever had. The food we had was fresh, tasty and utterly gorgeous. All the staff were incredibly friendly and nothing was too much trouble for them. There was such attention to detail. Arranging the chairs so that we could look out at the beautiful garden is just one example. I would not hesitate in recommending this for a gift or even just because you are worth it. Look forward to coming here again
The savory afternoon tea was very good, especially the scone which were a delight.
