Sandwiches were clearly frozen before hand as they were so cold. Scones were nice but cakes seemed a bit on the cheap side. Sugar was in paper sachets not lumps. Was not served in the garden Room either but in a side room at the front. Not great I'm afraid.
For the money the service could have been better, the views more interesting and the sandwiches fresher
Thank you for a lovely afternoon. Very considerate service. Lovely tea and tasty eye catching cakes.
Wonderful afternoon tea for my nans 80th birthday. The selection of tea was lovely and was pleased it was tea leaves and not tea bags! The service was 10/10, friendly, welcoming, attentive staff. Beautiful setting and the food was delicious.
We were in the coffeee shop, don’t know if this is the afternoon tea lounge. The waitress was very good even if she was the only one there and a bit busy. The sandwiches were very basic, scones were nice, cake very exotic - not quite English afternoon tea cakes.
Lovely afternoon tea, beautiful decor, staff attentive and happy. It was quiet but it was Friday afternoon. Hoping more people start going to the Tamburlaine as it’s a lovely place, the bar is amazing as are the cocktails.
very poor indeed! were not seated in the room i booked for Afternoon tea. Was told that room was reserved for a private function. they stuck us on tables in the bar area eventhough the restaurant was empty. Sandwiches were dry! Service was not very attentive and main issue is they over charged us. When the bill came we were over charged in comparison to what was published on the website. I complained and was told nothing could be done about it. i didn't want to cause a scene at our special event and ruin it for my friend so we paid. Won't be back there again and won't recommend others to go!
Afternoon tea was served in the garden room which looked lovely. The service was very attentive and the food was excellent although the tea was weaker than we would normally take it. It was very noisy due to two party groups present and quite difficult to hear each other speak at times.
We had gone for afternoon tea for our birthday and had stated that one of us was vegetarian and the other was pescatarian on our notes when placing the booking. We were greeted by the restaurant manager who referred to our booking and we mentioned again our requirements and she fully understood this.
We sat down and was greeted by the waitress who was very pleasant and offered us the tea menu which was amazing, however when bringing out the sandwiches, both sandwiches appeared with meat on them. When we spotted this, she apologized and went back to the kitchen. We then had to wait another 20 minutes for the sandwiches to come out. The Pescatarian came first and had one tiny piece of rocket with the salmon, then the vegan sandwiches came out. All 4 sandwiches were cream cheese and cucumber. All 4! Considering this is a 5* hotel, this was ridiculous to pay £22.50 for 4 of the same simple sandwiches and on top of that, the bread was stale. We made another complaint about the bread and 20 minutes went by and we were given brand new sandwiches. The vegan sandwiches had changed with a selection of sandwich fillings that were much better, after approaching the waitress to explain it was ridiculous I was paying £22.50 for the same sandwiches I could make at home. The bread was still stale, but after 3 attempts of getting sandwiches we just gave up. The Manager of the restaurant was very sweet and her customer service was outstanding. She came over and apologised about the mix up, offered us some champagne or mocktails (we were over the whole experience and just wanted to leave), gave us her business card and said that the afternoon tea was on the house.
The whole experience was dreadful, I would never recommend this place to anyone. It is a shame as the manager's customer service was really good, however the whole experience was just ruined.
The garden room was absolutely beautiful. Location was also great.
Good place to meet for tea. Wasn't pressured to vacate table like you are at some places.
Very enjoyable tea, lovely surroundings.
We had travelled to Cambridge on the train so the location is ideal.
Will definitely return.
Didn’t offer the menu choices available on the website. We were looking forward to a glass of Chapeldown, but were told prosecco was only option & that I hadn’t ordered it - I’d only booked table for 4, not specified food & drink. No menu was available when asked. Take it or leave it attitude.
Food was placed down but no one told us what the sandwiches & cakes were. We had to ask. Waiter was perfectly polite but I would expect an explanation of the food to be offered when it was served.
We had to send back the scones as they were too hard to even cut through. Had to go and find someone to address this. We did receive an apology from the waiter & glass of prosecco along with fresh scones, but food wasn’t up to standard one would expect of venue.
Would expect service & food to be of a higher standard & more polished.
We all left feeling disappointed.
Very good service, lovely ambience.
Slightly pricey but great for a special occasion.
Arrived and was seen to straight away very attentive food good.
Wanted to try this as a new option in town but Was disappointed by the 2 tiny scones for £9 and small portion of jam and cream which didn't suffice for 3 people. Scones were tasty, just tiny! The waiter apologised that he didn't normally serve in that space but it felt very fawlty towers just asking to see a menu. Lack of ambience and people. Will not recommend or go back.
The afternoon tea was lovely. There was a variety of different desserts all of which were delicious and the scones came with jam cream and lemon curd. The service was good, staff were attentive but left us time to make choices. Would definitely go again.
Absolutely loved this place! The decor is beautiful. Went for a friend’s birthday and they did the most beautiful plate! We also went on a Friday so we basically had the whole place to ourselves. I can’t recommend more.
This was my second time having afternoon tea at the Tambourlaine. The first time was truly excellent. This time, the service was very poor. After being given the tea menu we had to wait for 20 minutes (even though the restaurant was empty) until we decided to go find a waiter to take our order. Then, when the food came, we were not given any plates or cutlery and again waited for quite a while until we decided to go find a waiter somewhere near the bar. I was really quite annoyed, as my brother had flown in all the way from Europe and i wanted him to experience something special.
Lovely place to meet friends away from city noise
I would also recommend if you need quiet me time
The Garden Room is a really nice setting for Afternoon Tea, it was completely empty at 17:00 on Sunday (except for us) but I can image it'd have great atmosphere with a few more diners.
We found that the sandwiches were quite stale which gave us the impression that the food had been prepared quite a while in advance of the booking but the scones, cakes, and deserts were delicious (except for the Pimms Jelly, that wasn't too good). We were impressed with the gluten free options, most of which were gluten free versions of the standard food with only a couple of substitutions.
The service wasn't the speediest, especially considering we were the only four people dining. Our tea pots were empty/cold by the time food came and it would have been nice to have been asked for additional drinks before we'd finished the food.
We had a lovely time despite the lack lustre food quality and would recommend it, just be aware that it's not a place to go if you're in a hurry. Take the time to enjoy the tea!
Sandwiches were a little dry but cakes delicious. Not enough jam and cream served for 6 scones so more had to be requested. Service slow and no menu given, waitress had to be prompted to explain what was available.
Sadly I cannot recommend the Garden Room at the Tamburlaine. I booked at least 3 weeks in advance for afternoon tea and was expecting scones, cakes and sandwiches. We were not offered any of these and the service was not particularly good. The ambience was very quiet. The waitress was unfriendly. I complained about the service to the day manager , who was very apologetic and I was given complimentary tea and coffee. I won't be going back.
very disappointed in lack of service and sent an email to mention it nobody has bothered to get back to me terriable service all round
The Tamburlaine is a very impressive, trendy hotel with polite and attentive staff upon arrival. The afternoon tea is served in the very pleasant and decorative garden room. A nice touch is the presentation of tea in a box where one can smell and see the tea leaves to make a selection. The food was beautifully presented and was of an excellent standard. The only thing that let this experience down was how busy it was; obviously a testament to its popularity but unfortunately this meant the waiting staff took a long time to attend to us, although they were pleasant when they did come. A large celebration party was in attendance (a hen party, I believe) which was rather loud so conversation was at times difficult, although I recognise this is not the fault of the venue! I will definitely come again (hopefully on a quieter day!)
During our visit, On a Friday afternoon we were the only booking in the garden room. For this reason I can understand perhaps why the staff weren’t so attentive- on 2 occasions we had to go and find a staff member for tea top up and to ask for water we had asked for etc. The staff were very polite and nice. The food was very nice, the sweets amazing more so than the samwichs which were a bit dry but the food was quite small, the scones were very small like a bite size. Normally your very full after afternoon tea but this one is pleasant for not feeling too full, I must say though the males weren’t amused by the sizes! Because of this we asked if we could have more sandwich’s, this was an extra cost. The selection of teas is really good. We have enjoyed afternoon teas from our local garden centre to the Savoy for a comparison.
The tea room is very comfortable and perfect for afternoon tea and a chat with friends. The staff were lovely although it was difficult sometimes to catch their eye for a top up of tea. I found some of the sandwiches to be hard and was surprised to find 'ice cream' on the top plate of cakes. After we had started the sandwiches we found the ice cream had melted which was a shame.
We did have an issue when we came to pay, when I booked the price was £21.50, when presented with the bill we were charged £29.50. We questioned the price and this was reduced to £21.50 which we appreciated however I think we should not have been charged the increased amount in the first place.
Overall we enjoyed our afternoon, however I think the increased cost would probably put us off returning which is a shame.
Lovely afternoon tea for my daughter's birthday.
I was a little concerned after reading some reviews on here about the quality of food but I shouldn't have worried - the food was excellent. All fresh & home-made with classic & new recipes intermingled.
Service was good & ambience was perfect for an afternoon tea.
My only criticism was it was a tad pricey at £29.50 a head - apparently there are discount vouchers out there so I'd suggest looking around before you go!
Amazing room! Lovely scones! Even included a birthday treat for my mum for her birthday. 10/10 would recommend.
Beautiful hotel, lovely garden room for afternoon tea but the tea was overpriced when compared with other locations. I would think that the scones were not made in the day and although the tea was replenished the sandwiches and scones were not, as you often get with a more expensive hotel experience. Great place for dinner and cocktails
Venue was amazing and very central with lots happening around.I was a little disappointed with the sandwiches, too few and not enough vegetarian option. Also the bread quality was not great.I feel more sandwiches and less sweets would have been better in this day and age of obesity. The selection of tea was good.
The waitresses were very attentive and helpful and smiley.
The surroundings and decor in the Garden room is beautiful unfortunately the afternoon tea, particularly the food was very average. Most of the cakes were not anything special, as a baker myself the cakes were actually very bland. As for the sandwiches, the bread was hard, as if the sandwiches had been made and left out to stand before serving. An expectation when a person goes out for afternoon tea, is that the food should be above the expected standard and be rather special, which was not the case. Was rather let down and would therefore not recommend The Taburlaine for afternoon tea.
it was a special treat and we enjoyed the Afternoon Tea very much. Very generous and delicious, with a sense of fun.
We had afternoon tea for my daughters 18th birthday and it was very delicious and looked amazing.
