The new restaurant, Akira, is on the first floor of Japan House London.
Named after Chef SHIMIZU Akira, the restaurant presents an authentic Japanese dining experience based on Akira’s ‘trinity of cooking’ principles – food, tableware and presentation.
Visit for lunch or dinner to experience Japanese-style omotenashi hospitality and the theatre of cooking as chefs prepare dishes reflecting Japan’s diverse food offer, using seasonal ingredients over roaring robata (charcoal grill) flames.
Highlights of the menu include imaginative sushi specialities and chargrilled kushiyaki skewers made from umami-rich wagyu beef, pork, chicken, seafood and vegetables.
The Japanese staple of rice will be prepared in a donabe, clay pot.

Food was great. We ordered two 5-course omakase (one robuta and one sushi). The food was of excellent quality. The toro (fatty tuna) makes the whole journey there worth it! But the tempura on main of robuta omakase has been put aside for too long, the tempura coating was soggy. This is the only disappointment on food. Otherwise it is fabulous!

Must say food was alright , could have been slightly fresher , specially the tuna.

Service was rubbish , they thought for themselves when to bring the bill without us ordering it , after that they kept insisting for us to pay intruding and disturbing our conversation when there was still a couple who hadn’t finish their dinning either right next to us.

Apparently their manager wanted to close the till early...
Rubbish excuse for such a high expectation of service and an elevated price . Would never recommend.
If you have the chance to go somewhere else do so.

Best sushi in London, and as good as anything I have had in NYC or Japan. Already recommended it to 3 people. Will definitely be back. And for what it is, it is priced very fairly.

I took my mum for her birthday and she really enjoyed it. The service is very good ( also baby friendly) and the presentation of food is exceptional. Taste wise- it is good and as good as one can expect from a decent Japanese restaurant. The set menu is surprisingly good value but quite a lot to go through for lunch. Next time I will order a bento instead.

Definitely recommend it!

Akhira has become a trip to Japan for us. Great culinery experiance we have been following since the opening and the standards have been held steady. Well done . Quickest way to spend a few hours in Japan in London . Also being above an exhibition hall which changes monthly with talks on the displayed goods which can also be purchased. We are planning a trip to Japan so the travel section also downstairs is an added bonus for great current brochures all in english. Well done Akhira team keep up the good work. The food and service was very good indeed, and I would recommend Akira to anyone interested in trying Japanese food for the first time, as we did. We were there on a Thursday evening, and it was not busy which meant it was not noisy and service was quick and friendly, but I had the impression the staff would be attentive and welcoming under pressure for sure. We believe we had value for money, though the beer seemed a little expensive at £8.00 per bottle.

The Japanese Head Chef lost it completely.
He was very aggressive and abusive towards Floor Managers who provided amazing service.
I saw very arrogant Head Chef who thrown cutting board on sushi counter, he was hitting boxes and behave outrageously.
We couldn’t believe what we saw!
The food is without any taste camouflaged with pretty crockery.
The sushi counter is completely overloaded with bento boxes, plates which is shocking to see.
The Head Chef has no clue on how to run kitchen and design it. I’m disappointed to see Head Chef like him in prestigious Japan House London.

Such variety, such flavour! A wonderful dining experience for my Wife and I, enjoying the 5 course tasting menu - I would absolutely recommend this given both the amount of food and the variety of the food.

I could wax lyrical for paragraphs and never do the food justice - best asian cuisine I have ever had.

Another great meal at Akira. This time I had the exhibition special - basically buckwheat noodles in a dashi broth with daikon radishes and spring onions (kamo nanban soba). Great for slurping!

the service on the day was unacceptable - had to wait for the order some 20 minutes, had to wait for the bill for another 15 minutes (they were clearly understaffed). The food was excellent (it was our third or fourth visit). Interestingly enough they had no high chair so our babies had to be in their pram.

Too bad that such a good restaurant is let down by service (BTW they also made no attempt to make it up by knocking off something from the bill or the like),

A great let-down. All the cooked items were overwhelmed by tangy sauces and oversalted.
I have lived in Japan and been to Japanese restaurants around the world, but I have never seen sashimi presented with mayonnaise and chili sauce. To top it off it is expensive.
I would never have expected this in a place like Japan House. I shall not be returning or recommending this restaurant.

None Japanese Food at Japan House London

Our first visit.
The food was pretentious and salty, burnt lamb, full of mayo and chives everywhere. Same garnish used on most dishes. My main was delayed for at least thirty minutes. When my waiter went to check on my dish I saw chefs laughing at him.
This was unacceptable. Some chefs were sarcastically imitating Japanese greetings which looked like a poor musical, not funny at all. The waiter service was very good. There was no head chef in the kitchen or maybe there was someone but did nothing. Disappointing to see lack of professionalism and lack of cooking art on our plates. No innovation, just everage amateur cooking and bad attitude in the kitchen.
Highly disappointing on kitchen side and it's a shame as our waiter did his best.

The food at Akira was excellent and we enjoyed it immensely. The service might have been better but on the whole it was fine. I would like to see more Japanese waiters, particularly at a place like Japan House. it seemed odd that most of the senior service staff were European. Having said that, we would go back again because the food is superb.

To my surprise both dishes contained cheese. And we’re very salty.
As to service, some of the waiting staff were arrogant. The waitress didn’t explain what the various sauces for the silver cod were, she just put the dish in front of me and walked away. One male waiter kept brushing his long hair with both his hands then gone back handling food and glasses...
I had high hopes for Akira before my visit but I won’t return, as in essence this place lack of the Japanese hospitality namely Omotenashi. Food is just average.

The service was phenomenal and the highlight of the evening.

The food left me with some disappointments though. In the middle of the Robata Menu there was a Gazpacho that was so spicy, it was impossible for me to finish. Japanese food is so delicate, I have no idea why a professional chef would include such a course in the middle of a Japanese menu. Also the lamp in the bbq course tasted too burned in my opinion.

All in all I was hoping for a very authentic Japanese experience, considering the location within the Japan House, which it was not. Not at all in fact. However the service made up for it and some of the courses were still very delicious so we had a nice evening after all

Go to this place if you want to get ripped off in a pretentious setting with fake Japanese food. The only authentic thing is the welcome shout when guests enter. The omakase costing £75 comes with the most basic sashimi and sushi salmon, tuna.... plus lots of greens. The uni is not fresh at all and the wagyu beef is basically rump steak. On top of this, you get half sizes. The drinks menu is equally pretentious with over priced sake. If you have allergies, stay away because the menu is inadequately displayed and the staff are not properly trained in this area to understand even the basics of modern day cuisine best practice.

All in all, what a disappointment, especially with the fact that the restaurant is housed inside Japan House, this is a joke.

They forgot our order even that it wasn't busy time. The waitresses pass me when I call them twice, and I waved my hand a front of their faces, there were no possible way not to see me except you are blind. For people who don't know all kind of sushi, in the menu was not described what is the content of ingredients in each meal, doesn't have any pictures so you will play Russian ruler. For that kind of prices these kind of mistakes are not acceptable! Very disappointed!

Having an all Japanese waiting staff would have made the ambiance feel more authentic. The European staff members seemed to lack experience in Japanese etiquette. One of the bar staff was particularly surly.
The Akira bento box was a good way of introducing a large variety of dishes to customers who haven't had much experience of eating Japanese cuisine before, as well as being enjoyable to those who have. However, the wagyu beef dish I had was disappointingly chewy. The overall display of the meal was good and we liked the way it was served in authentic Japanese tableware.
