Amazing bento.. so yummy!
It was pricey but the food's presentation, quality and taste were truly exceptional. The design of the place is also very nice. We were having dinner on a busy Saturday night. The noise was moderate but didn't stay in the way of hearing each other speaking, which is rare in a busy restaurant.
A couple of downsides - staff could be coordinated in a more efficient way. We had at least 3 waiters serving us throughout the evening and each of them had a different style of providing service. It was quite confusing to figure who we should refer to in case of need as well as consistency in the latter would make a big difference and truly lift this place on the highest level.
Also, a little bit more training on polite yet casual omotenashi would be beneficial, since Japan House London is the place to experience it first hand.
Booked this restaurant for a special treat for our friends wedding present and they loved it! The staff were super accommodating in letting us pay/arrange in advance and sounded like they had a really special evening! :)
Food was fantastic, however the service was cold and slightly awkward, the water was charged at £5 a bottle and the service fee was added automatically when it should be at the discretion of the customer, the £20 bento boxes were great for the price but their original price was £40 and I would not have been happy to pay that amount, we had booked a slot for 2:30 (lunch service ended at 3:00) and when we arrived (early) we were informed that they would not be able to let us in the lunch service and could only do afternoon tea before changing their minds and « squeezing us in » as long as we ordered quickly, overall a generous 3/5
It was fun to have lunch at Akira Japan House. Both food and its presentation were really enjoyable. On the other hand, it was something odd, in particular, there are no paintings or decoration on the walls. The atmosphere is a bit strange.
Amazing food & superb service, will definitely be back again.
We order 2 omakase but the waitress took wrong the order and we received only one. Once we realised something was wrong with the starter we point the mistakes to the staff. Again we get only one course presented as a “share” plate when we never ask for sharing.During our meal not even one course were served at the same time.I'm sure the order wasn't updated for 2 omakase because we were still receiving food for one. I found really funny a miso soup presented as a share plate! You can see a lot of inexperienced staff, or menager who don't really care.
The experience was really stressful and the quality of the food is not so excellent to make you forget about the service.
The staff noticed the mistakes and our disappointment during all the meal and still, the bill was brought to the table with service charge included as for them was everything fine and worth to be paid.
Food was better than expected, except for sashimi.
But overall a great value, will definitely visit again.
The bento boxes were amazing! So beautifully presented and delicious.
The service was quite slow, but the restaurant was somewhat busy.
The rice and miso served with the bento box was a perfect touch.
Would definitely go again!
The restaurant week special of bento being half price was great! Excellent food, very nice atmosphere and attentive staff.
The bento box had some great sashimi but my karaage and salmon were cold. I really dintthink I'd go back and pay full price for that
Living in the neighbourwood I come often to Akira.
I did not find any of the familiar faces in the staff and the service was beyond poor and stressful.
The main course arrived before the starter and the general confident serenity of the service became a stressful running around.
Food was still very good .
Food was great and the atmosphere of the restaurant. Staff was lovely too and enjoyed my time at Akira.
The food was nice however the service was very disappointed. We been allocated to a corner and have been forgotten for the entire evening. I actually wanted to order dessert, but no one checked us since dishes have been removed. We’ve been waiting for long so I gave up, finally asked the bill, then another 15mins wait until someone brought the card machine. This is not the service when you paid £150 for a dinner for 2 in London
Service and food are very good.
Noticed that when waiter was setting up other table, they were making very loud noise which was quite surprise as everything else are very good.
They should be trained not to make such a noise which is common sense and manner in Japan.
Everything was amazing but the aircon was too cold and ruined the experience a bit
Great food, worth the price. Must try the Omakase course!
Miss communication with booking to start and services are slow.
Restaurant are very cold so food get cold soon , which not enjoyable.
Although restaurant should be upgraded one but tables setting are bit of cafes type and not much confutable seats to relax.
We went for lunch. And by chance they were offering 50% off to celebrate their 3rd anniversary of bento boxes so we ordered those. The selection was super, we enjoyed trying out various bites. So for us the value was amazing.
Only complaint that we had was with the service. As soon as we sat down we were reminded that we had 1.5 hr and was then reminded again twice thereafter saying they need to get it ready for the next guests. Felt like they rushed us unnecessarily as the food came out immediately. Their mannerisms weren’t entirely welcoming either so left a bad taste.
Always feels so special coming here. The welcome at reception desk upstairs was a little lacklustre but apart from that a wonderful experience as usual!
Beautiful food and atmosphere. The service was phenomenal and the the prices were fair. Will definitely return.
Excellent authentic Japanase food! The way the rice was cooked is the best I had in London.
One of my favourite restaurants. Have been there several times, more than 5 times, and was never disappointed.
Drinks were lovely but the food doesn't live up to expectations.
It was unfortunate that the restaurant was so short staffed. Everyone was very pleasant but sadly afternoon tea was a disappointment.
Visually very appealing and very nice service however the afternoon tea didn’t seem to be worth the price. The food was aesthetically pleasing but taste wise did not meet my expectation. Afternoon tea was overall very sweet and made me feel a little sickly after eating it. Have not tried any mains/ savoury items here so cannot give an opinion on that.
The whole lunch was delicious and quite an experience.
The experience was wonderful. The staff were very friendly and gave a great level of service! The special promotional price was spectacular, and I would definitely come again if they did any more special price promotions on their set menu! Highly recommended and have told friends to pay a visit!
Service really ruined experience. We had been looking forward to the bento and admittedly some of it was exceptionally tasty but the interaction with our first server make us feel in a very unwelcome environment and then the second server couldn’t explain any of the dishes and finally when I asked another server for the bill they just walked off and dealt with 2 other tables and then all the staff just stood on the other side of the room ignoring us for half an hour until we just got up and had walk to the exit to pay. Honestly I just expected a much smoother and friendlier engagement with the staff considering the price. Also a portion of rice should come as standard with the bento, I was left wanting more but there wasn’t an option to order more and a portion of rice is just a standard part of any classic bento. I certainly won’t recommend the experience to anyone and I’d suggest some better training for hosts.
It was a reasonably priced omakase and the food was the best part of the experience. Seated at the counter behind the front desk we were afforded privacy and the lighting was good. However, there was not a great view of anything, since between us and the chefs were mountains of crockery. It was also hard to get the server's attention.
Fabulous food, beautifully presented in a lovely setting
Me and my daughter enjoyed the bento boxes, some of the items bought back child hood memories. Soups within the bento boxes were nice and had different varieties of sushi to try. Customer service was great and attentive. We finished off with a dessert and it was all freshly made, everything was presentable. Will come back again for bento box or dessert. The restaurant is very nice and calm, there is a store and also gallery which we did not expected, so it was a nice surprise. This was very nice to walk around after eating and seeing Japanese history and items. It would be a good day out. Also check out the rest rooms, if you have not experienced Japanese style toilet before you should, very interesting and it's our first time :)
It’s good to have this kind of TRUE Japanese food in London. But the quality doesn’t meat the price.
Hostess that received us was sharp about us being 10 minutes late, reminding us that we will have to leave at a specific time. Ironically our last course was delayed so we actually overstayed our time. Food is good and all the other staff were lovely.
Superb Japanese food experience with their lunch bento box.
I have been to Akira many times before the pandemic, I believe they changed their staff. The women on the front door (whom also getting reservations) is very rude. There was England football match that day, traffic was really busy (they closed the roads etc due to match) so we were late like 15-20 mins, she called and nearly shouted on the phone?!?!? On the other hand there should be 20% discount (due to Japan House’s 45th birthday) they also didn’t do it saying we are late! I will never go again…
We were booked to sit at the counter, however, for a conversation between the three of us we asked if we could move to a table (which had not been available at the time of booking). As it was not possible, we were offered a separate large table with high chairs close to the bar which was quiet and allowed us a great catch up.
The food was amazing, as before, and the quality of fish and all ingredients was excellent and particularly at the 20% London Food Festival discount an amazing deal.
One of us celebrated her birthday and got a lovely decorated plate with her desert.
Staff were fantastic and I can only recommend this restaurant!
PS Loved the cocktails as well.
The flavours were not tru Japanese and not very well balanced. The service was awful. We were made to feel like a we were not wanted or it was an effort to accommodate us
Food was photogenic and tasty from a UK standard, though nowhere comparable to JP or HK. Some dishes were creative. Good taste decor. Music was a bit too loud for its style.
The waiters/waitresses seemed keen to get our table back though...still polite but made us uncomfortable. We still had 15 minutes left for our table and they took away our last plate without even asking (we did not really finish!)
Amazing food and friendly service. The food is incredible, but a little bit expensive for frequent visits. Would recommend for good Japanese bento, excellent portions.
